Chapter 748: Chapter 13 Tree-top Plains_1

Thus, for the first time, the girls saw the unique way the Lizardman Hunters set up camp in the swamp. Under the curious gaze of the girls, the Lizard Lady picked a suguwood tree at random by the lakeside. Sharp claws sprung from her hands and feet, which she used to deftly scale the tree. In a blink of an eye, she disappeared into the dense canopy of the towering suguwood tree.

"Could it be at the top of the tree?" Catherine exclaimed, surprised. "Isn’t tree-dwelling a camping style unique to elves? How come the swamp people also employ this method? Did they learn it from the elves?"

"Elves build their treehouses around the middle of the tree; using the trunk and thicker branches as support points," Pannis explained. "But Lizardmen are different. They set up camp at the top of the tree, which is fundamentally different from the elf’s treehouses. Once we climb up together, you will understand when you see the situation at the top of the tree."

The girls quickly found an answer to their question of how a camp was established on such an ethereal location – the tree-top. After struggling to climb through the dense network of intertwined, multiple-layered tree crowns, they finally understood Pannis’s explanation when they reached the top and saw the setting sun again. What they saw was not the pointed tops of individual trees but a flat, green Tree Network. The suguwoods unique to the swamp had a peculiar overall form; their crowns spread over a vast area, but the tops did not have pointed ends like pine, poplar, or oak trees. Instead, they had a flat, disk-like crown. When numerous suguwood trees intertwine, these disk-like crowns mesh together, resulting in a top plain with numerous gaps. This plain was unsuitable for animals to walk on due to the numerous holes it had. Because of this, there were not many beasts or magical creatures, with only a few small herbivorous magical creatures appearing occasionally. However, unlike these primitive beasts and magical creatures, intelligent beings could remodel this environment with their own hands, making the tree-top suitable for temporary residence.

Clearly, Galantis was busily engaged in such work. Excited by her return home after two years, Galantis, the Lizard Lady, seemed overly enthusiastic about these familiar but tedious tasks. Each step evoked a sense of nostalgia. When the girls climbed to the top of the tree, they saw Galantis with over twenty vine ropes, hopping skillfully from branch to branch, threading each vine through the topmost branches multiple times. After the vines and branches were combined, this formed a more intricate network.

"You have also come up. Hiss, come and help fast." Hearing the sound of climbing, Galantis looked up. Her triangular lizard head was full of what appeared to be an expression of laughter as she waved at everyone. "To set up a camping area for seven people is too much work for one person. If I do it alone, it’ll get very late. But, Hisss, it’ll be much quicker if everyone helps out."

"What should we do?" The girls, who were familiar with surviving in the wild, found themselves unsure of what to do at this moment. This unique camping method was something they had never seen before. Even though they wanted to help, they didn’t know how to. Catherine felt somewhat embarrassed and asked with a wry smile, "I would like to lend a hand, but I need you to tell me what I can do."

"Simple, help me find longer branches, cut them down and bring them here, like this one." Galantis pointed to a grey-white branch not far away and explained for a bit before shaking her head and saying, "Hisss, it’s too complicated. Let Uncle explain what kind of branch to choose. Hisss, my mother taught him, he knows it well."

"Okay, follow me. But don’t go too near, we have to walk a bit farther to find the branches. Be very careful where you step." Pannis tiptoed, swinging back and forth on the elastic branch-net. The whole nearby Tree Network quivered along with him. It wasn’t until everyone, even Galantis, glared at him that he stopped horsing around.

"Ava, let’s go with Pannis." Catherine issued her instructions. "You three stay put and see if there is any auxiliary work you can do to help Galantis. We’ll be back soon."

"I’ll also go." Vivian unstrapped her giant backpack from her back and massaged her sore shoulders, saying, "I can help set up camp too, hahaha, I don’t have to lie down and watch anymore."

"No way." Catherine, in response to Vivian, gave her lotus bud hat a good few knocks as punishment. "You, even after you’ve recovered, should have some self-awareness as a member of the Caster Profession. Have you ever seen a caster bouncing around on the top of a tree looking for branches? Stay here and help, no running around. Be careful not to accidentally fall from the tree when your health is just recovered. The height is forty to fifty meters. If you fall and break a bone, you’ll have to go back to bed. After healing, you’ll have to go through rehab again, and I’m not the one who’s going to be crying then."

"It’s okay. Even if a bone is broken, Lina is there; I won’t need to go through rehab." The mage girl continued her last struggle even though she knew it was unlikely she will get her way, "And I am quite agile. I can jump around, oh!"

"Are you an idiot?" Lina held Vivian’s robe collar, supporting the almost-slipping mage girl. She pinched her face habitually and said, "I won’t heal someone who brings death onto themselves, you dummy. Stay here."

The energetic girl, who had just recovered, had to reluctantly agree. However, she could barely sit still and ran to Galantis’s side to help make the Tree Network denser. Catherine shook her head helplessly and heaved a deep sigh. However, the smile on her face couldn’t hide the joy she felt deep inside. Compared to the fragile girl who used to be like a puppet, afraid to engage in strenuous activities for fear of her health crumbling, Catherine was much happier with the mage girl who had an abundance of energy, bounced around everywhere, and seemed like she wanted to make up for all the activities she missed in the past ten years. Although such a mage girl sometimes gave her a headache, it was all worth it.

"Indeed, it’s all worth it." Pannis seemed to understand Catherine’s inner thoughts. He said softly behind her back, "Isn’t this what you wanted to see?"

"Yes, it’s indeed worth it." Catherine gave Pannis a gentle smile, squeezed Pannis’s arm tightly, and whispered, "Thank you. It’s all possible because of your help."

"What are you saying?" Pannis turned his head away awkwardly and looked in another direction. "Hurry up and get to work. Quick, I’ll teach you how to select the branches." (To be continued.
