Chapter 744: Chapter 9 The Trust that Crushed the Soul_1
"I think I have a pretty good guess about what happened." Catherine said thoughtfully, "However, can any of you answer my previous question, what exactly is ’Soul Whisper’?"
"It’s a method of communicating directly with the soul." Vivian explained, "I was just curious why Galantis chose to use the more cumbersome common language, rather than Soul Whispering."
"Because mom says humans don’t really like soul-to-soul conversations, hiss." Galantis explained, "She said that humans are strange, even though the conversation is one-sided and we cannot directly receive human thoughts, they still don’t like it, hiss hiss. Moreover, Soul Whispers can only occur between individuals, hiss, so if several people are talking, the Soul Whispers between me and Mage-sis, Knight-sis won’t hear, hiss hiss, which is quite troublesome. So I seldom use Soul Whispers in the outside world, hiss. Although speaking in common language is more laborious, but it avoids causing displeasure in others, hiss hiss. Mom says that when different races communicate, we need to take into account each other’s preferences and taboos, hiss, she said Uncle told her this."
"Hahaha, the food today was really delicious." Pannis laughed awkwardly, "The weather outside is also lovely, I think it’s perfect for an outing, um, I’ll go and check, hey don’t pull me, can’t I change my mind?"
"Stop making a fuss, no one will chase you." Catherine shot Pannis a look that was both annoyed and amused, then took Galantis’s hand, which was covered in scales. The Lizard Lady’s hand felt cold to the touch, but it wasn’t as slippery as that of a reptile, rather, it was incredibly dry. The tiny, close-knit scales on her body surface were smooth and hard, with no roughness to be felt where they connected, as if she was wearing a finely crafted scale armor outer garment. Holding Galantis’s hand, Catherine asked, "Galantis, would you mind if we all visit your mother, Madam Alcmene in the swamp with you?"
"Of course it’s welcome, hiss." Galantis swung his tail, which he had wrapped around Pannis’ leg, and said, "Mom loves visitors from different races, hiss hiss. Even though she seems a little upset after chatting with them every time, she is still quite happy to listen to visitors telling the legends of the outside world, hiss hiss. What Mom likes most is discussing the stories of heroes from a hundred years ago with the visitors, hiss, I don’t know why she’s so interested in these stories."
"Oh? You don’t know why?" The girls all looked at Pannis knowingly, Catherine asked: "Didn’t the High Priest tell you? The High Priest, being from the same era as those heroes, might have interacted with them, that is probably why she is so interested in their stories."
"No, Mom only left the swamp once, hiss." The Lizard Lady shook her triangular head, "That was when she left with Uncle and Knight-sis, hiss hiss, she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet those heroes from all races. However, it is indeed strange, hiss, that such an important event for all races, Mom should’ve been there, hiss hiss, but Mom didn’t go, hiss, maybe there was something special that held her up, hiss hiss."
"In that battle, the organizer didn’t invite a single representative Demigod from a certain race or faction. If such a Demigod were to die, it would have a severe impact on that certain race or faction. The organizer intentionally avoided this outcome," Pannis explained, "So, even though Alcmene was powerful, because of her unique status and importance to the swamp, she was probably excluded."
"That makes sense." Galantis nodded, then suddenly realized something and excitedly asked, "Hiss hiss hiss hiss, are you serious, Knight-sis? Hiss, you really want to go home with me and Uncle? Hiss hiss, really, really?"
Instead of answering directly, Catherine directed her gaze toward Pannis. The clever Knights-girl knew that for someone like Pannis, there were some decisions that she could humorously make for him, but for some pivotal issues, they were his to decide. Otherwise, even though he might not show it, he would inevitably feel uncomfortable. Such discomfort, when it reached a certain point, could lead to conflicts. Being together day and night, a wise woman would naturally know to avoid such conflicts instead of just doing things her way all the time.
Pannis naturally caught the question in Catherine’s eyes. After thinking a bit, he sighed and said, "I haven’t seen Alcmene in many years. I don’t know what she’s become. I suppose seeing her again won’t hurt. After all, we are old friends, and each meeting might be our last. Alright, let’s go to the swamp. But if you get bitten by mosquitoes, don’t cry. They are one of the most dreadful creatures for the Outland’s different races."
"We have nothing to worry about," Vivian winked at Pannis and said in a teasing tone. "You have so many tricks up your sleeve, I simply can’t believe that you don’t have an effective method to deal with swamp mosquitoes. So we aren’t worried, once we get there, you’ll naturally have a solution to these problems. Everything in the past has proven this point, right?"
"Vivian," Catherine shook her head at the Mage-girl and said seriously, "We should figure this out ourselves. We can’t rely on Pannis to solve every problem. I know you trust him, but a lot of times, blind trust can also crush a person’s spirit. Just like how you can trust me, but you would never think I’m omnipotent. It goes the same way for everyone, once people start to think you’re indispensable, you’re heading for a dead end. Isn’t that right, Pannis?"
"Perhaps. Who knows?" Pannis smirked, whether he’s mocking others or himself was unclear. Shrugging indifferently he said, "I don’t have the time to think about this problem now as I’m studying a more important issue."
"What’s that?" Catherine asked in surprise, "What could be more important than this?"
"Of course there is, and it’s a matter of life and death." Pannis put on a serious face, "I’m researching what will happen to my chances of seeing tomorrow’s sunrise if a certain person found out that our meal cost seven hundred and seventy-two gold coins."
"Pannis!" Catherine’s face froze and she started trembling. She lowered her voice, "I think we need to have a talk." (To be continued.
