Chapter 743: Chapter 8 Vivian’s Questions_1
"My mother is quite old, hiss, she’s more than two hundred years old. Although she’s still healthy, I can feel her growing older, hiss. I don’t like this feeling." The girls discovered one peculiar trait about the Lizardmen: their tongues would frequently dart out and their tails would sway slightly whenever they were emotionally disturbed, whether they were happy or sad. The more distressed they were, the faster their tongues would flicker and tails sway. Based on these traits and the situation at hand, one could easily decipher a Lizardman’s emotions. For instance, as Galantis spoke of his mother now, her tongue flickered noticeably faster, and she solemnly said, "I love watching my mother lead rituals, hiss. Whenever she performs the Dance of the Hunt, I always feel so happy, hiss. But ever since she passed on the position of High Priest to Ounna twenty years ago, she hasn’t presided over any ceremonies. I wish I could see her perform the Dance of the Hunt once more."
An hour before, dishes of food had been brought to the table one after another. The girls’ attention was drawn away by the tantalizing aroma wafting from the food, leaving no one in the mood to think of other matters. Everyone was focused on the food before them. After all, they had just gotten out of the tundra. Although Pannis was a good cook, the food in the tundra was simply too scarce. Despite having enough grains and compressed food, no amount of cooking or processing could make these meal options taste good. In the last month, even the always-stoic Ava couldn’t help but frown at the mention of mealtime, a rare expression on her face. As a result, everyone at the table felt as famished as if they hadn’t eaten in years. Within just thirty minutes, the extravagant dishes that filled the table were reduced to empty plates under the combined efforts of seven people, with residual aroma still lingering in the dining room. To avoid any awkwardness, the other diners from the Light of Hope Adventure Team had already finished their meal and left, leaving the spacious dining room to Nellie’s adventure team and Galantis, the Lizard Lady. After finishing the memorable meal, Galantis remembered Ava’s earlier questions about the local customs and culture of the Swamps. After a brief introduction, the girls naturally steered the conversation toward Alcmene, whom they were most curious about.
"So, your mother was the previous High Priest of the Swamp People." Catherine tended to use the term "Swamp People" instead of "Lizardman" under the presumption that the former was a less offensive term, although the Lizardmen themselves didn’t really care how outsiders referred to their race. "I’ve heard that the previous High Priest of the Swamp People was the most open-minded to outsiders. It’s no wonder she sent you out to gain experience in the world."
"Yes, because of my uncle and sister, my mother has been quite fond of interacting with humans since she was young, hiss hiss." Galantis nodded her triangular head, "Hiss, everyone praises my mother for promoting interactions with humans, hiss. Although some of the elderly aren’t accustomed to the new ways of living, hiss, the younger generation is quite grateful for my mother’s efforts."
"Galantis, I’ve been wondering about something." Vivian had been silent, lost in thought. Suddenly, she asked, seemingly out of nowhere, "I noticed that Swamp People have some difficulty speaking Common. Why don’t you use the Soul Whisper to communicate with us? Wouldn’t that be much more convenient?"
"Cough cough," Pannis suddenly choked, looking away, "You two continue, hahaha, I’ve got something to do, I’ll take my leave first."
"Thud," The Legendary Rank Swamp Hunter, Galantis, instantly wrapped Pannis’ legs with her tail, then grabbed his sleeve. Her yellow-green, vertical pupils flashed pleadingly as she whispered, "Uncle, why are you leaving again? Hiss, didn’t we agree to go home and see mom together?"
"Hey, when did we agree on that?" Pannis twitched at the corner of his mouth, gritting his teeth, "I noticed you’ve been corrupted after spending a few years outside. You’ve even learned such tricks. Was it Makara who taught you this? Let go of me, I am going to find him to teach him a lesson."
"Stop fussing, we’re headed that way anyway. There’s no harm in visiting the swamp. Galantis hasn’t been home for a while and she misses her mother. Let’s give her a reason to go home." Catherine made the decision: "And why did you overreact when the Soul Whisper was brought up? Vivian, what is the Soul Whisper? I’ve never heard of it."
"Hiss, the Soul Whisper is a special ability of our race. It’s natural for you not to know about it, Knight Sister." Even though she couldn’t sway her tail because she was coiling around Pannis, Galantis’ rapidly flickering tongue showed her excitement. "But Mage Sister, hiss hiss, I didn’t expect you to know about Soul Whisper. Very few people do. Ah, right, you’re my uncle’s new teammates. He must have told you."
"Yes, that’s right. He was the one who told me." Vivian adjusted her floppy brimmed hat with her now plump hand, flashing a brilliant smile at Pannis. "Right, dear Pannis? It turns out it was all a dream. In my dream, someone told me this strange knowledge. It was indeed a wonderful dream, right?"
"Hahaha, what are you talking about? I don’t understand anything." Pannis looked up at the sky, laughing forcefully. "What wonderful dream? What strange knowledge? I don’t remember anything."
"Humph, I’ll let you off for now, I’m not done with my question." Vivian stuck out her tongue and continued, "Galantis, do you have any artifacts that could grant other races the ability to use this special ability temporarily?"
"Hiss? Is there such an artifact?" Galantis replied, puzzled. "I’ve never heard of it, hiss. If there were one, I should know about it."
"Could it be something your mother made without your knowledge?" Vivian glanced at Pannis, "Like something she made during the time your uncle was in the swamp?"
"Hiss, that’s possible." Galantis suddenly realized, "During that period, my mother and uncle were away for quite some time, hiss. When they returned, she did seem very busy and tired for a while. If she did make such an artifact, it must have been during that time."
"I see, thank you." Vivian nodded, and as she sat on the opposite side of Pannis, she whispered so that only the two of them could hear, "And thank you as well. I’m sorry for the precious gift though." (To be continued. If you like this work, please vote and recommend it on qidian.com, your support is my biggest motivation.
