Chapter 740: Chapter 5 Uncle and Sister_1
"Hmm?" The girls turned curious eyes on Pannis, realizing that since entering the restaurant, he had been hiding behind them like a thief, refusing to even show his face. The way he chose his angles made it difficult for anyone to see him. Still, even though he was doing a good job at concealing himself, he was spotted by the Lizardman who tugged at his clothes like a child, saying, "Mom misses you and the knight sister a lot, hiss. Before I left, she was still talking about the days when we all left the swamp to go on an adventure. If you have time, please come home with me and visit."
The speaker, the individual tugging at Pannis’s clothing, was an older Lizardman. In the Yarran World, Lizardmen lived for about three hundred years and reached adulthood at fifty. They resembled upright-walking lizards because they often hid and hunted in the marshlands, they were generally not tall. Their bodies were covered in resilient scales, and like lizards, their hands and feet had sharp, retractable claws at the tips of their fingers. Their claws were as sharp as swords and could slice through prey easily. An interesting feature of Lizardmen was their tongues and tails. Winding tails around each other signified friendship and blessings, and brushing the other’s face with their long, snake-like tongue expressed affection. This greeting was often used between two generations or close kin.
For those unfamiliar with the swamp people, it was challenging to determine a Lizardman’s age. But, actually, just from their appearance, you could tell. Their scales would change color with age. During youth, most were light green, though there would occasionally be light blue and beige scales. Upon reaching adulthood, their scales would darken rapidly into dark green, dark blue or brown within a year. After reaching a hundred years, their scale’s color would change again, gradually turning red. The red would deepen with age, often peaking at one hundred and eighty years, signifying the peak of the Lizardman’s physical growth. Afterwards, the red scales would turn white, with the red fading and white increasing as they aged. Older Lizardmen had whiter scales. This last stage continued till all the red faded away, and the scales turned unhealthy white during their last years, lasting until their death. Thus, by looking at the scale’s color, one could tell a Lizardman’s age. The scales of the Lizardman speaking were already starting to redden. It was quite clear, hence, he was assumed to be at least a hundred years old, likely about a hundred and twenty or thirty years old. Despite his age, the mature Lizardman behaved like a child, tugged at Pannis’s shirt, and looked up at Pannis’s face with hope, saying, "Uncle, you promised Mom that you’d visit after you finished your business. That’s why Mom didn’t go with you. But then, you left for so many years, and Mom got old waiting but you never returned. She is sad."
The girls’ eyes were sharp as they cut across Pannis’s face, their gaze like they were looking at scum. Pannis, sweating, laughed awkwardly and said, "Ah, Galantis, long time no see. You’ve grown a lot, hahaha. How’s Alcmene? Ah, please don’t pull on me like this. You’re going to tear my clothes. I won’t run away."
"A female?" The girls were startled as their eyes turned to the red-scaled Lizardman, Galantis. From the name, it was evident she was female. But if one only looked at the appearance, who could tell whether a Lizardman was male or female?
"That’s not certain, hiss." Galantis, still clutching Pannis’s clothes, shook her head, her tongue darted in and out, touching Pannis’s neck, and said obstinately, "Mom said, Uncle, you are like the wind in the swamp, always unpredictable, never in one place. If I let go, you might run away, hiss."
"Well, I won’t run away." Pannis had an awkward expression, but still familiarly patted the tail that Galantis had entwined around him, and explained quietly, "Some things happened after we left, complicated things. That’s why I haven’t been able to visit Alcmene for so many years. Don’t worry. I’ll go to see her soon, at least before everything ends."
"Ahem." Catherine coughed lightly, her expression strange as she said, "Pannis, I think you should introduce us."
"Knight sister." The Lizardman Galantis turned to Catherine immediately. Her long tail also wrapped around Catherine: "You don’t even persuade Uncle to come home and visit Mom more often. You used to be so close to Mom, hiss. Why are you also gone for so long, like Uncle? You even promised to visit the Mountain Country together to see the sea of clouds and sunrise on the mountain. Right?"
"Ah? Me?" Catherine was startled by the sudden change, and it took her a while to react. Aware that Galantis had mistaken her for someone else, Catherine giggled in an embarrassed yet delighted manner. She followed the custom of different races and shook the tail that Galantis had wrapped around her, saying, "Hello, you’ve got the wrong person. I’m also a knight, but not the knight sister you’re thinking of."
"Huh?" Galantis’s yellow-green vertical pupils spun for a while before she finally nodded, "Ah, maybe I indeed made a mistake. After all, I’m not used to distinguishing human appearances. I’m sorry, knight sister."
"No worries. Your sister is very pleased." Even though Catherine knew that the Lizardman before her was several times older than her, Galantis’s naïve attitude made Catherine refer to herself as sister naturally. With a smile, she asked, "Your name is Galantis? How did you end up with these guys? I didn’t see you when I teamed up with them years ago."
"Mum said my power’s quite good, hiss, I shouldn’t stay in the marsh all day like her. Instead, I should go out and see the world." Galantis said somewhat worriedly, "Even though I wanted to stay home with mum, hiss hiss hiss, she’s right, I should be living independently for some time, so I left the marsh two years ago. Hiss, mum suggested beforehand I could become an adventurer like uncle and knight sister, so I joined this adventure team. I can travel across the Yarran Continent, hiss hiss hiss, and along the way, look for you two, hiss, I mean, the uncle and that knight sister."
"Alright, I understand." Catherine nodded, shot a glare at Makara, and coldly huffed, "You’re lucky, considering my relation with Galantis, I won’t pursue your slander against me."
"Ah, fantastic." Makara didn’t hide his inner joy at all. He directly jumped from his chair, nearly overturning the table. He didn’t look at his meal anymore, loudly announced, "This mission is done, everyone disbanded here, and took half a year off each. Assemble at the City of Knowledge half a year later, and no one should be late. Alright, enjoy your meal, I’m leaving first."
"Captain!" Before the human team member could finish his sentence, Makara fled the Ice and Fire Inn’s restaurant as if a horde of magical beasts were chasing him. It seemed like if he slowed down, he would be gobbled up by the beasts. He left five team members behind, all with bitter smiles on their faces. Not long from now, the terrifying legend of Catherine Gold would grow and instill more fear.
"Er, um, I’m sorry, Captain Catherine." The Land-Man from the Sea Country was the vice-captain of the adventure team. As the captain frequently conducted himself improperly, the vice-captain always had to deal with the issues he left behind. He had become used to it. After Makara hastily departed, the vice-captain scratched his head and chuckled bitterly, "Our captain really was rude, I hope you won’t be angry, actually, he didn’t mean to be...ahem, he’s just a bit abnormal."
"Don’t worry, I don’t take his words seriously." Catherine shook her head, revealing a gentle, diplomatic smile, "We’ve collaborated for a while now, I know what kind of person he is. If I were to always get angry at him, I would be angered to death by him. This time, I just wanted to give him a lesson, teach him not to spit out whatever comes to mind, um, but I assume, it’s futile. If he could take lessons, he wouldn’t be behaving like this. Ah, you must’ve had it tough."
"Hahaha." The vice-captain gave a dry laugh. Though he hesitated to talk ill of his captain, his expression wholly agreed, clearly indicating that he felt a great resonance with Catherine’s words. He felt a warmth of understanding in his heart, even a tearful longing, "I’m so grateful you could understand."
"Have you completed your mission?" Catherine did not dwell on the Makara topic any longer, she took the initiative to shift the conversation, "You didn’t just leave the ice plains too, right? Quite a coincidence, but if it’s inappropriate, you don’t need to disclose it."
"There’s nothing to be confidential about." The Land-Man shook his head, "We didn’t enter the ice plains. Mage Lord Saernallus of this area tasked us with a survey mission. It’s not complex, we’re done. It’s our team’s vacation period now, so we’ll be taking a half-year break."
"Oh, I see. In that case, I won’t disturb your holiday plans." Catherine stood up, taking Galantis’ retracted clawed hand and said, "Would you like to have a chat with me? I believe you must have a lot to say to your ’uncle,’ isn’t that right?"
The emphasised ’uncle’ made Pannis’ cold sweat even more profuse. However, Galantis seemed oblivious, he cheerfully said: "Hiss hiss, sure, hiss, perfect." (To be continued.
