Chapter 739: Chapter 4 Ice and Fire Inn_1
"Sis, you can’t be so cruel." After escaping death by freezing in the tundra, Freya changed from a bystander to a victim, protesting tearfully, "I just got out of the icy tundra. My body is in the direst need of nutrition. This is the time when I should be eating a lot to replenish my energy, so all food controls should be lifted, right? How can it be as if I’m still in the tundra? You can’t treat me like this, it’s not fair."
"When have you not needed to eat a lot to refill your strength?" Catherine retorted, remaining unmoved. "Even if you’d left the tundra, you still wouldn’t be able to go without food control. But you do have a point, it really shouldn’t be like when you were in the tundra. So instead, we’ll change it to three loaves of bread and two pieces of meat."
"Oh no, great Lord Weston, punish this brutal criminal!" Freya practically jumped up on the spot, but to protect the life and safety of the floor, she managed to restrain herself. To be fair, in the past couple of months, with Catherine’s and Freya’s own efforts, her weight and body shape had improved significantly. At least on the outside, she seems like a human instead of a round blob. She had lost at least seventy kilograms, although the difficult journey was only halfway over. For Freya, the memories of the past few months were unforgettable and painful, just like living in hell. Even though she cooperated with Catherine, she would occasionally protest. For example, like now, "Big sis, Ice and Fire Inn’s food is quite famous, even I know about it, and I live in the Holy City. I’d regret it for the rest of my life if I can’t enjoy a good meal here. Could you bear the thought of me living in regret for the rest of my life?"
"I can’t bear it, so I’ll just close my eyes and not watch." Catherine gave a straight face but at the end couldn’t help but cover her mouth and snicker. She sighed and shook her head in resignation. "Oh my, the food here is indeed famous, I guess I can’t really control you on this, especially since you’ve shown great progress in weight loss these past few months. You deserve some kind of reward for that, so you’re motivated to continue trying. Okay, okay, I’ll lift the food restrictions for today, as long as you control your portion size. No overeating, or else if your stomach hurts later, don’t come complaining to me. Nobody will sympathize with you then."
"Aha, kind big sis." Freya could no longer hold back and cheerfully hopped up in excitement, making the wooden floor tremble. The passing inn’s waiter watched with his eyes twitching, fearing the floor would collapse. The other girls smirked and egged Freya on as they ran towards the dining room, leaving Pannis behind with a helpless expression to explain to the waiter.
Freya and Catherine were right, the food at the Ice and Fire Inn is very well-known, not just in Barrow City, but also the eastern part of Yarran Continent. It is one of only three inns in Barrow City which, despite being a tourism hotspot, has a relatively small customer throughput, so three inns are more than enough to cover all visitor needs. In Barrow City, the three inns were similar in that they served as multifunctional buildings, with bars, restaurants, entertainment rooms, music halls, reading rooms, casinos, and even small sports fields inside. Guests could access everything without leaving the inn.
Each inn has its own unique services. The Sunshine Inn, for instance, had a maestro from the northern district of the City of Knowledge, who performed a piece with his Flaron Harp in a small music hall every evening; sometimes even followed by a piano piece. Music-loving tourists visiting Barrow City would typically select the Sunshine Inn first. The Rowena Inn is best known for its bar. A master winemaker from Mountain Country Kulan, who had been helped by the founder of the Rowena Inn, had passed on some of his Dwarven winemaking techniques as thanks. This has led the liquor of the Rowena Inn to sweep across the eastern part of the Yarran Continent, and any drink-loving visitor to Barrow City would regret not staying at the Rowena Inn. As for the Ice and Fire Inn, it is mostly known for its food. It is rumored that the head chef of the Ice and Fire Inn used to be a former royal chef from the Falar Empire, who, after unwittingly discovering a scandal involving the emperor, was framed and forced to escape from Falar City overnight. He only dared to settle down in the southernmost city of the Mage Country of Butte, where he took a job in an inn using his original profession under a hidden identity. This story isn’t very credible and could be easily disproved, but the royal family of Falar Empire acted very royally and chuckled at such blatant publicity just some years ago. The second royal child, Nicholas, who had a strong chance of succeeding the throne, even went out of his way on a diplomatic visit to pay a special visit to Barrow City, or Barrow Town as it was known back then. He stayed in the Sunshine Inn and greatly praised its cuisine. He joked to the innkeeper that he, on the behalf of the emperor, pardoned the head chef for any past wrongdoings. This act of magnanimity and generosity by the prince had managed to improve the outlook of many towards the royal family and turned a potential scandalous rumour into a tale of royal graciousness. Of course, it also enhanced the reputation of the Sunshine Inn’s food, attracting more visitors.
"Royal family my arse, that’s utter bullshit." As the six of them approached the entrance of the restaurant, they heard a thunderous voice loudly objecting in a coarse tone, almost shouting, "The food in the Falar Empire is like garbage fed to cave rats. Humans love eating half-raw grilled meat and they call that royal cuisine? Don’t make me laugh. Half-raw grilled meat? Even I can grill that."
Resonating through his chest, the thunderous voice was very distinct, with a strong nasal accent. The accent was also slightly eerie, and it sounded like the speaker was speaking with his tongue sticking out - a characteristic only the Dwarves in the Yarran World possessed.
When she heard the Dwarf’s words inside the restaurant, Catherine’s smiles froze and her eyebrows raised slightly. Being a descendant of a family from Falar Empire, she was unwilling to hear such comments about her country’s food, regardless of her thoughts on the royal family. After standing still and silent for a while, a scornful, mocking smile appeared on Catherine’s face, and she led the way, pushing open the doors of the restaurant first.
Because of the time taken up by grooming, it had surpassed the dinner time, and there were only two tables of customers left in the restaurant. One of them seemed to be preparing to check out and leave because they were disturbed by the loud dwarf. The other table was where the dwarf who spoke earlier was sitting. Seven or eight people who looked like adventurers surrounded the table, which was laden with plenty of food that had just been served.
After a brief observation of these people, she found this group to be truly unique, a complete mix of different races. In them were a human, a tiger beastman, a dwarf, an elf, a winged person, a land person from the Sea Kingdom of Casa, and even a most rarely seen lizardman. Such an adventurous team would be hard to find throughout the Yarran World, yet one was found right here.
As members of the Adventurer’s Guild, the young girls of Nellie’s Adventure Team were somewhat familiar with this particular group. Their name was quite ordinary, called Light of Hope, which sounded grand, but the members of the Light of Hope Adventure Team were not as ’normal’ as the name suggested. A few of them had personalities that seemed very eccentric, the dwarf team leader who was speaking at the moment was one of them. He spoke without any subtlety, blurting out whatever came to his mind from the most unacceptable perspective. He not only offended many clients, but even other adventure teams who were also members of the guild. If they weren’t once one of the top Upper Rank Silver adventure teams, other adventure teams would’ve found it inconvenient to deal with them a long time ago. They had heard that less than half a year after Nellie’s Adventure Team advanced to a Gold Rank Adventure Group, the dwarf leader of the Light of Hope Adventure Team, Makara, advanced to Legendary, and the team also advanced to a Gold Rank Adventure Group. Although their strength was still far behind that of Nellie’s Adventure Team, they were also considered one of the most top-tier teams among adventurers.
"Damn, today is really unlucky." Makara raised his signature loud voice to the top when he saw Catherine walk in: "I see who, Lord of Fire above, it’s actually you, Catherine Gold."
"My name is Catherine K. Field, not Catherine Gold, thank you," Catherine’s mouth twitched, she gritted her teeth, trying to keep her voice normal to say: "Team Leader Makara, I didn’t expect to see you here again."
"I definitely did not want to see you again." Although Makara did not seem likable when he spoke, his actual strength was formidable. However, after seeing Catherine, he showed some fear, unconsciously moving his chair back a step, and loudly said: "Since the time you tricked us out of five thousand gold coins, I have not wanted to have any contact with you."
"That was not trickery, you slandering me like this, be careful I submit an arbitration application to the guild." Catherine pulled a chair from the side and sat down at the table, crossed her arms in front of her, and sneered: "You were the one who proposed the cooperative task, you were the one who requested that income be distributed based on task completion, and you were also the one who agreed to my distribution method in the end. From beginning to end, our cooperation was transparent, every sentence can be verified. If you say one more useless word, I will use the guild’s arbitration to request for tenfold compensation for my reputation loss. I believe you also know the guild’s usual practice, I’d have the right in this kind of arbitration, you are bound to lose."
Makara pulled his chair back a few more centimeters, his hands covering his mouth. He knew Catherine was right, once she submitted an arbitration application, he would certainly lose. The adventure team had already paid compensation several times for his outspokenness, he did not want to go through that again. Moreover, with Catherine’s love for gold coins, once she sought compensation, there was no way he could still afford to laugh.
But, a stranger voice interrupted his fear: "Sssss, uncle, why are you here, sssssss, why don’t you and the knight sister come back to see us, sssss, mother always misses you." (To be continued.
