Chapter 728: Chapter 89 Herr’s Death_1

In Herr’s eyes, the Pannis behind him now looked more like an Undead than he himself did. Though he was half-man, half-Undead, Pannis as he saw him now could only be described as half-human, given that only half of his body remained.

Pannis was in a particularly pitiful state. Above his waist, the majority of the right half of his body had been blown apart. From his wounds filled with chunks of flesh, one could see his twitching lungs, writhing intestines, and even his heart struggling to beat. The destruction extended from his stomach upward to his face. He was left with only half his face, his white skull visible on the right side. His right eye had become a black hole leading straight into his brain. His half mouth of bare teeth exposed, opening and closing as he spoke, he looked like a genuine skeleton. If only the Soul Fire could flicker in his black eye socket, he would be identical to a real Undead.

Pannis stood unsteadily, his one-handed sword in his left hand. With each sway, some piece of his internal organs would fall from half of his body. It was unthinkable that just to maintain simple standing, he had to endure such immense pain. However, it was as if Pannis’ body did not belong to him, he did not even look at his scattered organs and broken body. He was smiling instead, a smile filled with reckless abandonment and viciousness. His only remaining eye sparkled with a mad light.

"Why won’t you die already?" Herr looked at Pannis’ face and then at his sword-holding hand, then back at his face. Grinding his teeth, he said bitterly, "You’re already in this state, how can you not be dead? You should be dead now."

"How could I die before you?" Pannis responded, with a monsterous and sinister smile. He twisted the one-handed sword in his hand, saying in a husky voice, "I won’t close my eyes until I see you die with my own eyes. Besides, maybe you didn’t know, but thanks to your Danacus’ ’blessing,’ I could crawl back from hell even if I were to die. So, there was never a chance for you to survive once we caught up to you."

"That’s impossible. You should be dead. You can’t possibly still be alive like this." Herr’s eyes were filled with disbelief and surprise. The strength in his body was slowly fading. Without the backing of the Divine Grace, his skin wrinkled at an observable speed, becoming increasingly similar to his originally mummified appearance. His voice gradually returned to its original, painful, scraping-metal sound.

"Too bad, I happen to be alive." Pannis said, his voice severely damaged and barely audible, "So, die in doubt and confusion. Study why I am still alive when you’re in hell."

"Don’t you be smug. Though I’m dying, you, all of you, all the foolish mortals in the world, will soon join me. Hahaha." Herr thrust Pannis’ one-handed sword out of his own body forcefully. Covering the wound without any bleeding, he laughed madly, "My master is returning soon. He will use your partner’s body. Hahaha. Then you will taste the flavor of despair, brought to you personally by your former woman. Hahaha. Just thinking about it brings me so much joy. I will be waiting for you in the afterworld, waiting for you to join me as we watch your world being cleansed by my master’s wrath. I only hope that by then, you won’t have collapsed because of dying at the hands of your own woman. If you collapse that easily, even in the afterworld, I would lose a lot of fun. So you must try hard, hahaha."

"Don’t worry. Regardless of what plans you might have, I will do everything to ruin it." Pannis squints his remaining eye, speaking coldly, "I will do everything possible to prevent your master from reviving. If he revives, I will send him back into eternal sleep myself. I won’t fear this time, I won’t let Nellie’s sacrifice be in vain. I will fulfill the wish she couldn’t, protect this world for her. So, die in peace, join your two partners in hell. I will send them down to keep you company. And, remember to say hello to Danacus for me. Tell him, I’ll come for him."

With that, Pannis, using the last energy in his body, swung his long sword in his left hand again. The destructive Aggression flickered on the surface of the sword, cutting across Herr’s neck. The head, lifeless as a mummified corpse, flew high into the air, rolled a few times before falling to the ground. Even in death, the three black sockets in Herr’s skull seem to be filled with endless mockery, mocking the helpless situation of Pannis and Nellie.

With a clank, the one-handed sword slipped powerless from Pannis’ hand, producing a crisp collision sound as it fell on the ice surface. Pannis, out of strength to support himself, swayed a few times before falling straight back. Halfway down, a rough arm shot out, catching his body, helping him sit on the ground. A complex expression emerged on Aske’s rigid face. He glanced sorrowfully at Pannis’ wound, whispering softly, "Kyle, didn’t you say you knew what you were doing? Why did we end up here in the end? Even if you want to do something for Nellie, there’s no need to pay with your life. If you live, can’t you do so much more for her?"

"Don’t worry about me, I won’t die. But it really hurts," Pannis grimaced, the injured half of his mouth making his smile uglier than crying. He gritted his teeth to suffer through the intolerable pain, "Old friend, help me with something. Open my backpack and bring out Nellie’s wine."

Aske hesitated, moving his lips as if wanting to say something. Finally, he shut his mouth and walked to the backpack that Pannis had thrown aside before the explosion. He fetched, speechlessly, two unlabelled, unmarked brown crystal bottles from the bag and placed them in front of Pannis. A croak of laughter came out from Pannis’ throat as he gently caressed the smooth and cold crystal bottle with his remaining hand, he mumbled dreamily, "Do you think, when we kill this moribund, will Nellie be able to see? Will she be happy? Will she smile at me again?"

"Of course." Aske rubbed his eyes and nodded emphatically, "Nellie would definitely be pleased. This is a task we didn’t finish back in the day, even though a hundred years have passed, as long as it’s completed, it would resolve a regret in her heart. But you, risking your life in order to make up for her regret, even if she is happy about it, how could she possibly manage to smile?"

"Ah, you wouldn’t understand, I’m atoning." Pannis shook his head. The movement caused severe pain due to his injured muscles, "The crime I’ve committed can only be washed away through concrete actions. This is just the beginning. Everyone related to Danacus, everyone related to the Divine Servants, I won’t let anyone go. Perhaps only like this will I have the courage to face her again, even if it’s only in dreams."

Just like his other comrades, Aske did not understand what had happened back then. He could only watch him with a bewildered gaze, unable to voice his questions.

"To be honest, I really miss her. I yearn to hear her voice again, to see her smile once more. Even after what I’ve done, I still harbor such an unrealistic hope; it’s such a greedy and foolish act. Yet, I can’t control these feelings," Pannis mocked himself with a laugh, drawing Nellie’s wine close to his body. He clutched it with all his might, as if he were holding onto Nellie’s armor-clad body. In the midst of Aske’s silence, he held onto it tightly before letting out a sigh like a sigh of relief, whispering hoarsely, "I can’t stand it any longer, it’s damn painful."

The next moment, Pannis put the wine bottle down. He pulled out a dagger from somewhere and, before Aske could react, he severed his own throat.

"Wait..." Aske felt himself insufficient to grasp the situation. In no way had he anticipated things to turn out like this. He barely extended his hand when he saw Pannis’ blood spurting out from his neck like a fountain. All he managed to ask was, "Why are you doing this?"

No one answered him. The wound on Pannis’ neck was so deep that in a few seconds, a relieved smile spread across his face as he ceased to breathe and his heart stopped. Aske stood frozen on the icy plains, looking at Pannis’ smiling corpse, unable to describe his feelings. The stoic Sand Person assassin, under no circumstance, would have guessed that what seemed like a straightforward mission would make him lose one of the partners he respected the most, and also one of a very few friends. The cold biting wind swept across the glacial plain. Although the Sand People didn’t feel the cold, standing next to Pannis’ lifeless body, Aske still felt a chill seep into his heart.

Deep in thought, Aske suddenly changed expression, as if sensing something. He turned his razor-sharp gaze to the right. From the light fog emerged a familiar figure, walking with familiar steps, slowly advancing through the dissipating mist. Looking back on the ground, a faint glow was emanating from the blood and body - they seemed to be slowly vanishing like being vaporized.

"Are you mourning over Nellie’s bottle of wine?" The Pannis who emerged from the fog teased with a voice that made one want to hit him, "I’ve told you, don’t worry. I won’t die. Why don’t you believe me?"

Aske, his frosty face unclear of what expression to adopt, twitched sandy cheeks, strangely asked, "This is the result of that reversal of the Death Words from back then? Even if you die, you can be restored perfectly?"

"Yes." Pannis walked over, picked up the wine bottle, and put it into a backpack on one side, "Even my personal belongings and the items inside the backpack before I died. It’s a miraculous state, isn’t it?"

Aske lowered his head and fell silent for a few seconds before abruptly thrusting the dagger in his hand toward Pannis.

"Hey, even if I wasted your sentiment, it doesn’t mean you have to kill me again." Pannis avoided the attack in horror and took off yelling and shouting, "Help me, there’s a demi-god assassin trying to kill, someone, help me!" (To be continued.
