Chapter 713: Chapter 74 Goblin Medical Hall of Fame_1

The two arguing girls finally noticed their surroundings. Their expedition had stopped while they were in the midst of their friendly discussion. At the end of the frozen tunnel, there was a wall plastered with mud and frost so thick it almost obscured its original color. To the right and top of the wall, there was a protrusion like a door frame, but there was no such thing on the left. Or rather, it couldn’t be seen on the left, the protruding door frame extended into the frozen soil layer.

"These frost spirits sure are lazy." Pannis curled his lip, grumbling discontentedly, "In order to dig the tunnel, they didn’t even reveal the whole door, only half. We have to dig the other half ourselves. How exhausting."

"You’re at it again," Catherine glared at him unhappily. Instead of touching the wall, she studied the door frame carefully before saying, "Actually, it’s not even half, at most, one-quarter is embedded in the frost layer. This is easier than I expected. You should think of it this way. Without the frost spirits’ help, even if we found the location of Laboratory No.9, we would have to drill through over two hundred meters of icy layers and frozen soil with our own strength. That’s even more difficult than our current situation. Ava, you’ve confirmed this before, but let’s confirm it one last time. Is this building the goblins’ Laboratory No.9? Are there any defensive measures on the wall and door?"

"No active defense systems detected." Ava said unemotionally. "It’s confirmed that this is Laboratory No.9. We’ve received a response from the control center of the lab and are establishing a connection, please wait."

"Um, even though you are again connecting to the control center, I suggest you attempt to speak in a more humanlike manner." Catherine thought for a bit before suggesting, "This would be more conducive to helping you adapt to human behavior and identity."

"Understood.", Ava’s eyes, which represent data, flickered for a moment before she replied, "Understood. I will try my best to maintain human-like behavior. Connection established and data exchange underway. Process estimated to take three minutes and forty-seven seconds."

"Sigh." Catherine let out a sigh and gave up trying to correct Ava’s habit. She reached out to wipe the filthy wall. Despite enduring ages under extremely low temperatures, the goblin metal retained its original properties, still smooth as new. The dirt and frost that seemingly firmly clung to the door easily detached at Catherine’s touch, revealing the gleaming metal beneath. The door appeared to open horizontally and was tightly closed except for a small gap in the middle, much like the door they had seen in Angus Village.

Lina nudged Pannis’ waist and teased, "Didn’t you say you could open a door with a cloth? Why not give it a try?"

"Because I’m scared." Pannis rolled his eyes and shook his head vehemently, "If we open the door in an unorthodox way and trigger any kind of trap, that would be a disaster. Although we might not be afraid of these traps, I don’t think that healing device has the same kind of defense as us. If the healing device gets affected by the trap, do you think Catherine would kill me?"

"I don’t think she would," Lina actually looked thoughtful before answering seriously, "Yep, she definitely wouldn’t. Why don’t you give it a try? I won’t lie to you."

"No, I won’t try. You go ahead." Pannis refused, "We can predict the outcome without much thought. I won’t do it."

"Are you two done playing around? If you are, come help." During Lina and Pannis’ teasing, Catherine had already wiped the dirt off the entire door. She pulled out a shovel from her backpack and signaled, "Let’s start digging now. The workload seems big. It’s going to take a few hours. The sooner we get started, the sooner we can get in."

"Wait a minute." Ava, who had been connecting to the internal control center, suddenly stopped Catherine and shook her head, "We don’t need to rush. We shouldn’t need to excavate. There should be a way to open the door. Let’s take a moment."

"No need?" Catherine paused, looking up and down the gleaming door, she realized, "Oh right, it means we don’t need to open both doors at once, we can open just one side? That would make things much easier."

"Mmhm," Ava responded to Catherine’s question with the simplest response. Still standing as if in a daze, she proceeded to exchange some data with the control hub. A minute later, she lifted her head with a hint of excitement in her voice, "Data exchange complete. Basic control permissions have been obtained. Further interaction is required to activate more usage rights. The current daily maintenance data shows that the Whole Body Regenerative Auto-treatment Device is in good condition --- a simple check would suffice before it can be put into use."

With a soft thud, Vivian seemed to have been drained of all her strength upon hearing Ava’s words. She collapsed backward in a heap — nobody was prepared for this reaction. If not for Freya standing behind her, she would have fallen backward without any protection. Fortunately, the young mage quickly regained her composure, standing upright again, her face slightly flushed as she reassured them, "Don’t worry, I’m fine. It was just a small issue with the Puppet Control Spell earlier. It must be a delayed aftereffect following my previous sickness. Yes, that must be it."

"Teehee..." Lina and Catherine couldn’t help but laugh, with Catherine teasing, "You cute thing, this is the first time I’ve seen you this adorable. Alright, alright, I know it’s just after-effects, don’t be in such a rush."

"Whoosh", under Ava’s control, the silver door to half of Laboratory No.9 creaked open. However, unlike other goblin buildings, this one didn’t open smoothly, an indication that the cold and the pressure from the earth’s crust had indeed caused some wear and tear to the building’s equipment. Luckily the damage was minimal and within acceptable limits. From the open door, another stationary door could be seen, and their connection formed a cogwheel-like seal, tightly locked, ensuring that no dirt or debris could find its way in. This design bore striking resemblance to the ruins of Angus Village.

As the door opened, the lighting fixtures inside the laboratory flickered momentarily and then sequentially lit up, making the interior brighter than daylight. The group extinguished their Crystal Energy lamps and cautiously stepped through the doors. Behind the massive doors lay a horizontal corridor. Soft lighting filled the area, illuminally allowed one to cast a faint shadow. The corridor was relatively low, just over three meters tall — a distinctive goblin style. Occasionally, one could spot portraits hung along the corridors.

"These are members of the Medical Hall of Fame — scholars who have made significant contributions to biology in over seven thousand years of goblin history," Ava pointed at the portraits and explained, "More precisely, those honored here are scholars who have made contributions to the field of medicine. Every one of the researchers here considered it an honor to have their portraits hung here posthumously."

"Hmm, there are not as many as I expected," Vivian said as she scanned the portraits on the wall. To the others, all the depicted goblins looked almost identical, so it was quite hard to differentiate each individual. However, Vivian could read most of the Goblin Script, so she could distinguish between them through the brief introductions and notable achievements listed beneath each portrait. As they walked down the corridor, Vivian suddenly let out a surprised gasp, pointing to a portrait of a goblin with a slightly high nose, "Eh, this person... His name is... Anton ... yes, Anton Levenhook, right?"

"You found him too," Ava nodded, "That’s correct. He is the inventor and manufacturer of the Whole Body Regenerative Auto-treatment Device. He was originally a business merchant but had an innate love for biology. He continued his studies during his leisure hours and developed high theoretical expertise, despite never having had hands-on healing experiences. The treatment device he invented was a pioneering achievement in medical history, which earned him the title of the first-class scholar from the Goblin United Government. After he passed away, his name was inducted into the Medical Hall of Fame, as you see now."

"Suddenly feels a bit familiar, doesn’t it?" After hearing Ava’s explanation, the girls couldn’t help but feel a strong affinity for the high-nosed goblin with mismatched eyes in the portrait. They took turns bowing down in front of the portrait, silently giving thanks for inventing the device that could cure Vivian.

"Oh right, which one is Dr. Searle?" Lina asked after she bowed, "Ava, you should remember the arrangement of these portraits, lead us there. I think we need to pay our respects to Dr. Searle as well."

"I’m afraid I can’t do that," Ava shook her head, "Dr. Searle didn’t qualify for the induction into the Medical Hall of Fame. Despite discovering Searle Syndrome, his overall contributions to medical history were not considered significant enough. Although later generations suggested posthumously including him in the Hall of Fame, his candidacy was eventually declined after a discussion in the Medical Alliance."

"Sigh, such a lack of vision," Lina clicked her tongue, swooshing her novel through the air in front of her. It was unclear whether she was venting her frustrations or fantasizing about using the book to slug the Alliance members who refused to recognize Dr. Searle’s achievements.

The group continued down the corridor, closely inspecting each solemn-faced portrait along the way. Whenever they came across an interesting personality, Ava would elaborate on the scholar’s life and achievements, enabling them to experience the seven-thousand-year-old medical history of the goblins, which unfolded before them link by link, portrait by portrait.

The corridor was long and filled with portraits, but there was an end to it, eventually. After bypassing a few doors along the corridor, Ava stopped in front of a metal door, leading the rest of the group. After a beep, the metal door slowly slid open, and Ava led the way in. "This is the path to the lab where the healing device is. Follow me." (To be continued. If you like this story, please vote for it on qidian.com. Your support is my biggest motivation.
