Chapter 710: Chapter 71: The Upcoming Hope_1
On the cold, desolate expanse of the ice field, a bizarre and incongruous sight was unfolding. A mountain-sized entity, shaped from shards of ice and akin to a titan of lore, was striding forward with large strides. Yet, the strangeness didn’t end there.
Amidst the ice, Blue Hand reverted to his Ice Form, capitalizing on his racial characteristic to sprint across the terrain. His three friends were following closely behind. The smallest of the lot was hanging onto the lanky, 4.5-degree figure, waving his spindly arms, and making a clinking sound akin to the collision of icicles with his mouth. No one among them, apart from Frost Spirit, could understand what he was saying. Ballsy, round as he was, wasn’t running at all, rather he rolled over the ice like a huge ball spinning at an intense speed, the sound of his trajectory reverberating through the field, crushing any minor obstacles on his path.
Blue Hand, the largest amongst them all, had an icerberg-ish body standing over a dozen metres tall and around seven or eight metres wide. The surface was not smooth, but, quite like a real iceberg, was filled with uneven spots. The six members of the adventure team, sat comfortably on these relatively flat spots. The up-and-down movements of the iceberg making their journey blissfully effortless.
"See, sister, I told you we didn’t need another day’s rest." Freya and Catherine sat back-to-back. After this mishap, their bond had strengthened even more. Freya leaned into Catherine’s back and shouted over the booming footsteps, "Travelling on their backs doesn’t hamper my recovery at all."
"Shut up. Keep talking and I’ll kick you off. Or worse, I’ll cut your meals in half." Catherine rolled her eyes and said, "Plus, don’t think I’ve forgotten what you’ve done. Thought you’d get off scot-free for hiding food? We barely survived this time thanks to those without-ban foods. But it doesn’t excuse you from hoarding food. That intent was malicious in itself and I cannot forgive that."
"Oh dear, I think I’m still ill." Freya immediately held her head and whimpered, "I feel lightheaded and my limbs are weak. I still need to rest for some time else I fear I might die, oh woe is me."
"Stop learning from that moron." Catherine motioned towards Pannis, who was sprawled on one side without a care for the severe cold, lying lazily on top of Blue Hands with his legs aloft. If it weren’t for his swaying foot, one might have assumed he was sleeping. Catherine indicated and then said, "If you’re keen on copying someone, then pick some good traits. Like... Forget it. Just don’t copy him."
"Hey, hey, I might overhear." Pannis immediately sat up and shouted uncomfortably, "I haven’t done anything to you guys. Why suddenly bring me into this? I’m innocent. If you guys are fighting, please don’t involve me."
"I regret to inform you, war is cruel indeed." Catherine silenced Pannis with diplomacy. But immediately after that, she sneered and said, "But are you truly innocent? This morning, someone sneaked a few honey cookies to Freya. And that person had the audacity to do so behind my back. Would you know who that was?"
"Ahahaha, the weather is really nice, right? Ah, Blue Hand, you’re shaking too much." Pannis jumped up to change the subject and looked at the sky, "Don’t shake any further. I might fall."
"Idiot." A massive echo came from the top of the iceberg, "You weren’t this stupid the last time we met."
"Hmph." Catherine disregarded Pannis, who had switched to arguing with Blue Hand. A smile played at the corner of her mouth, but she didn’t pursue the matter further. In truth, she was quite frightened about Freya’s adventure. If Freya didn’t have those sweets with her, she might not have made it through the hunger and weakness until she found a good place to send a signal. Therefore, Catherine pretended not to see Freya’s food-hoarding trick and only brought it up when necessary.
The atmosphere atop the iceberg was harmonious. The other three girls were gathered in a huddle. The heads of three different hair colors were leaning close, whispering about something. Most of the conversation revolved around Ava speaking and Lina and Vivian listening. They were probably talking in detail about the situation inside the lab.
"You guys should come and join us," Catherine called out to the three girls, "We need to hear about this too. After all, we can’t solely rely on Ava to operate the equipment. Freya’s a mechanic, she should be of some help."
"You won’t be of help, or rather, I don’t understand either," Ava replied expressionlessly. However, the three still climbed down from the iceberg, gathered around Catherine at a nearby dent and sat down again, "It’s an Automatic Treatment Device. You just need to set a few instructions at the start. The specific operation mode and principle inside the treatment device are part of the mechanical design. The Research Center doesn’t have any stored data."
"She was just describing to us how Laboratory No.9 looks from the inside," Vivian added, "But it’s a shame that such a large research center can’t be utilized like the Crying Cave Research Institute. It feels like a waste."
"Don’t be too greedy," Catherine shook her head, "The Goblin Research Center is the extremely vital to Ava. Let’s leave it sleeping in the demiplane. Having an institute as your own personal laboratory should be enough."
"Yes, I was just saying," Vivian nodded, "I suddenly feel strange. It feels like the closer we get to Laboratory No.9, the stronger an impulse to run away it becomes."
"That’s a normal psychological response, no need to feel strange." Catherine had a keen understanding of the human heart, "After the operation, your hope was rekindled. You just fear the disappointment of it not coming true, hence, the wish to run away."
"I guess so, but it still feels unreal," Vivian sighed, "The ailment that troubled me for more than ten years is about to be cured? I’ll be able to run and jump and talk soon? It’s a bit hard for me to believe."
"Alright, we’re here," The moving iceberg suddenly stopped. Blue Hand swayed a bit and then announced loudly, "Get down now. You guys have been stomping over me, it’s very uncomfortable."(Work In Progress.
