Chapter 708: Chapter 69: Good News from the Frost Spirits_1
When Freya recovered from her weakness, it wasn’t just one day that had passed, but three. The harsh environment and her worsening wound had inflicted damage on the young girl’s body. She had been bedridden for three full days. Even with Lina’s Disease Removal Spell, and the therapeutic medicine prepared by Vivian, she couldn’t recover any faster. According to Lina, however, the fact that she was able to save her right leg and be back to normal activities in just three days was nothing short of a miracle, thanks to the benevolent gaze of the God of Love.
On the fourth day, just as the frost spirits had stated, the adventure team were able to easily find their new campsite without any signs or markers left behind. The Blue Hand expressed that the location seemed very familiar, but, they still couldn’t set off. Catherine emphasized that although Freya had regained her mobility, she was still weak. If she engaged in strenuous activity now, she would potentially fall ill again. Even if she didn’t, she wouldn’t be able to give her all in battle. It was better to rest for one more day until she was completely recovered before initiating any action. With the exception of Freya, no one protested. Everyone agreed they should adequately prepare before setting off to avoid the risk of Vivian facing a potential accident like Freya encountered before once they had cured Vivian.
"So, did you guys bring back good news?" Pannis had to fulfill his promise of providing food for three days. Even though he had been evicted to the ice cave outside by the girls on the excuse that Freya needed a fresh environment, he cooked in the cave while talking to the four frost spirits who were eagerly watching the fire and food. "Have you found the ruins?"
"Unless there are other ruins that look just like you described them," The Blue Hand responded on behalf of his friends. "We’ve looked under the ice within a fifty-kilometre radius and found only one ruin like that. However, the location of the ruin is deep, not just beneath the layer of ice, but also more than three hundred metres deep into the permafrost layer, finding it wasn’t easy."
"Did you go in and look?" Catherine asked from the side. Although Pannis was banished from the ice house, the pleasant smell of food still wafted towards it. Eventually, the five girls, unable to resist, ran out to wait for the food to be ready by the fire, the same way they used to. Hearing The Blue Hand’s reply, Catherine couldn’t help but ask: "How is the situation inside?"
"We didn’t go inside." The Blue Hand kept his eyes on the pot over the fire, answering without looking up: "The door there was closed, we were disinclined to go through all the trouble to get in, and you guys didn’t say we should go in."
"Well, that doesn’t matter." Catherine shook her head: "But if it’s that deep underground, how are we going to get in?"
"We will help you drill a small hole in the ice and permafrost layer respectively." The Blue Hand thought for a moment before replying. "You can crawl in through the hole to get to the ruins. By the way, I can open the end of the cave for you at the location of the main gate, but whether you can open the gate is your own business, we can’t help with that."
"Can there be only one small hole?" Since the frost spirits returned, Lina had been hiding behind Catherine, too afraid to reveal herself to the frost spirits. This time, she finally mustered the courage to poke her head out from Catherine’s shoulder and asked timidly: "Since you can control ice, why can’t you just create an ice crack directly and expose the ruins?"
The Blue Hand cast a strange look at Lina. The sight scared her into hiding behind Catherine again. All she could hear was The Blue Hand’s voice sounding as if ice cubes were colliding when he responded: "Like the ice bricks you used to build this house, you can move them easily, right? But how easy is it to move an iceberg?"
"Uhm..." Lina whimpered, seeking refuge behind Catherine, and refused to speak again.
"Don’t bully her." Pannis threatened the frost spirits while shaking the spoon in his hand. In front of him was a metal pot, from which a rich aroma was wafting. Through the milky soup, one could see small, grey-white pieces of meat and brown-yellow plant steams rolling in the broth. They already knew food was scarce at the pole, so they had brought ample food supplies, ensuring they wouldn’t need to waste time or energy hunting.
"Aww, I’d like something with a stronger flavour!" Freya complained, trying hard to hold back her drool. For the past three days, due to her weakened state, she could only have exceedingly bland food under the strict instructions of Lina and Catherine. The food portions were also controlled to just enough to not feel hungry, causing her immense agony. She complained daily about being mistreated despite being injured. When she was finally able to move about normally, she had hoped to gorge on a hearty meal, but Catherine had mercilessly rejected her request. The food intake for the day had to remain relatively light to allow her digestive system to adjust. However, the portion size could be slightly increased so that she would have enough energy to undertake long-distance travel and adventure the next day. Hence, the beautiful princess, in complete and utter self-pity, looked at Pannis tearfully and lamented, "Otherwise, I could eat their portion, even though it has a heavy flavour, I wouldn’t mind."
"The flavour is too strong, you won’t be able to tolerate it," Pannis replied, unable to decide whether to laugh or cry. "If you can convince the one there, who’s trying to kill you with her glare, I’ll prepare some sumptuous food for you."
Freya retracted her neck, catching a glimpse of Catherine, who was glaring at her. She lowered her head silently, seeming guilty.
Soon, after sufficient cooking time, the soup in the pot turned from milky white to a creamy yellow, and the aroma in the cave became even stronger. Even the frost spirits, who had a very weak sense of smell, seemed to have caught a whiff of the inviting aroma. Pannis took a cloth bag that was hanging next to the fire, took out the warm flatbreads that were already steaming from being smoked, and handed them out to the girls. Then, he poured everyone a small bowl of thick soup. When he gave the soup to Freya, he winked at her subtly. Freya’s eyes lit up as she took a hurried sip. Though her expression remained sour, there was evident mirth in her eyes. Swallowing large mouthfuls with her spoon without any trace of royal decorum, she looked like she hadn’t been fed in days. Catherine sighed, turned her head pretending not to see anything, but still threw Pannis a fierce glare.
Since Pannis had prepared a generous amount this time, the frost spirits didn’t fight over it. Each held their share of soup, gulping loudly, occasionally praising its taste. Judging by the scene, nobody would guess, this was in the almost inhabitable polar region, where the severe cold could even freeze the air one breathed.(To be continued.
