Chapter 697: Chapter 58 Ice Storm_1

The ice storm, the most dreadful killer on the ice field, is also a very rare natural phenomenon, often occurring only once every few years or even every decade. Each occurrence might only last for a very few minutes, hence, apart from the native frost spirits of the ice fields, it would be both fortunate and unfortunate for any other races to encounter an ice storm. The fortunate part is that you are lucky enough to encounter such a rare natural phenomenon. As for the unfortunate part, it skews towards survival - staying alive during an ice storm’s onslaught is not an easy task. Even if you manage to survive momentarily, you still have to deal with various hardships in the aftermath.

The onset of an ice storm essentially involves just the wind. However, the intensity of such wind is very high, capable of effortlessly sweeping up huge ice boulders weighing several hundred kilograms, and its speed is incredibly fast, potentially reaching up to 100 meters per second. Such powerful wind speeds across the ice fields carrying along with them countless ice fragments have terrifying destructive power. The enormous ice chunks it brings with it could even obliterate small ice mountains if they make a direct hit.

For life forms living on the ice fields, ice storms are their greatest nightmare. When an ice storm comes, all magical beasts would hide in the deepest part of their nests, hoping their nests are sturdy enough to withstand this phase. Even the frost spirits, known for their exceptional vitality on the ice fields, deeply fear ice storms. Upon discovering one, they immediately plunge beneath the ice layer to avoid the storm’s whiplash. If any of them forgets to dive underneath before the ice storm hits, they would be swept away by the gale, continually crashing against shards of ice in the wind, torn into pieces by the ice shards and possibly damaging their cores. This is a fate the frost spirits dread the most, so they will try everything to avoid such disasters.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), when Freya had just climbed atop the ice rift, she ran head-on into the terrifying ice storm. The arrival of the ice storm doesn’t give any warning signs, a trait that adds to its terror - you could only discern its imminent arrival from the winds’ shift just seconds before it hits. However, given its speed, by the time you feel its presence, it is already too late.

Yes, everything was already too late. Due to her unfamiliarity with ice storms, although Freya felt slight changes in the wind’s strength as she was climbing atop the ice rift, she didn’t give it much thought, deeming it a normal occurrence. By the time she heard the piercing shriek of the ferocious wind sweeping over the mouth of the ice rift, she wanted to leap back down the rift, but it was far too late. As soon as the thought crossed her mind, the raging wind had already hit her. The terrifying wind, accompanied by frighteningly low temperatures, transformed the area into a living hell in an instant.

Freya was not faring well. Despite being the heaviest member of the adventure team - even after months of dieting, the once beautiful princess still weighed close to 200 kilograms - her weight didn’t help her in the face of the onslaught of the ice storm. Freya, who had already abandoned her climbing rope, was blown away like a piece of paper in the ice storm, disappearing into the distance with the gale before she could even let out a scream. The last thing the princess saw before being blown away was Ava, her right hand drawn rigid, undeterred by the broken bones resulting from the severe collision, stabbing deep into the solid ice layer like a blade to anchor herself, her other hand stretched out in a vain attempt to grab hold of Freya. Unfortunately, they missed each other by a mere dozen centimeters - a distance that under normal circumstances could have been closed simply by leaning forward, but in this situation, proved to be an impassable chasm, possibly even one separating life and death.

Accompanied by the spine-chilling shrieks of the raging wind, Freya could only feel the world spinning non-stop. Ava’s outstretched hand became a small insignificant dot in the blink of an eye and disappeared from her sight in the next instant.

Being caught in the wind is a sensation that those who have not experienced it can hardly imagine. It felt like a nightmare to Freya. Her ears were filled with the wind’s piercing howls, her eyes stinging so much from the wind that she dared not open them. The intense wind pressure on her face took away her ability to breathe. Gusty winds from every direction constantly compressed her body, the intersecting forces causing an immense amount of pain, as if the wind was about to tear her body apart. Fortunately, she had the physical strength of a Legendary Rank professional. If it were only a Lower Rank professional, no, even an Upper Rank professional of the silver tier, they would eventually be torn to pieces in this intensity of wind.

Other than that, there were also the rotation and vertigo. She felt like a falling leaf amidst the wind, continuously spinning and rolling. The high-speed and frequent rotations made it impossible for her to discern any directions, and the overwhelming feeling of nausea kept surging up from her abdomen.

The girl was not alone in the wind. Accompanying her besides the storm were numerous shattered ice chunks. These ice shards were jagged where they had splintered off, and each fractured area was akin to a sharp blade under the propulsion of the strong wind, capable of slicing off flesh upon even the slightest contact.

When she felt shards of ice cutting into her body, Freya immediately opened her Magic Shield in her dizzy state. The light blue Mana Shield started flickering rapidly as soon as it went up, a sign that the shield was continuously under attack.

"I have to save myself." This was the only thought that flitted through the girl’s chaotic mind. She knew that even though she was still alive, tumbling in the speedy wind, any ice mountain, any protrusion might spell imminent death. Once she collided with anything, all that awaited was being reduced to a hideous pile of flesh and blood. Even if she was lucky enough not to collide with anything, the shards of ice in the wind would eventually destroy her shield and leave her battered and bruised. Could she, having lost a significant amount of blood, truly have the strength to face whatever comes next?

Even though she didn’t understand the ice storm thoroughly, the girl knew very well what she would have to face if she managed to survive this storm. The storm had blown her to an unknown location and eradicated all traces that could be used to track her down. Judging from the speed of the wind, only a few minutes would be needed for her to end up tens of kilometers away from her friends, and none of them would have any idea of each other’s whereabouts. So when that time comes, how would she, whose backpack was filled with spare parts instead of food, fend off the extreme cold and hunger, and get through what was probably the toughest time in her life?

"So I must save myself," the girl silently told herself, "I must do my best to protect myself from harm and try to prevent the wind from blowing me too far away. But what can I do right now?"
