Chapter 695: Chapter 56 Interaction of Young Girls_1
The frozen tundra is the coldest in the early morning. Although the temperature at night is lower than in the early morning, every morning, a cold breeze would blow across the icy plain. Walking in the chilly wind would make anyone feel as if their marrow was freezing over. The Sun God Huront’s chariot hung high in the sky, casting a hazy light on the ice field, refracted by the lingering mist. Two figures, seemingly resembling starving magical beasts akin to wolverines, were wandering not too far from the ice house. Starvation and the threat of death drove them to ignore the intimidating aura emitted by the Legendary Rank professionals. They roamed dangerously close, hoping to sneak into the ice house in search of food.
However, they dared not enter the ice house, no matter how famished, because three young girls stood guard at the entrance - obviously three members of the adventure team. Last night, Catherine suggested searching both above and beneath the ground. The frost spirits didn’t object, but Pannis declined the idea. Even for Legendary Rank adventurers, searching on an icy plain is fraught with danger. To minimize risk, it’s best to limit venturing out unless necessary. Hence, he proposed that he and Ava scout around instead. One was a former demigod, and the other had physical strength that didn’t even rely on Aggression, which put her on par with Legendary ranks. Plus, they could both fly, evading most dangers. It made the most sense for the duo to explore together.
Catherine wanted to protest, but remembering Vivian’s condition made her back down. Although the parasitic creature had been removed, the damage to her body was irreversible. Despite the Mage girl never mentioning it, Catherine knew the damage inflicted over the past few days had left her considerably weakened. If they didn’t find the healing device soon, even without the parasite causing further destruction, Vivian’s life expectancy was limited to a few years. In this situation, it was indeed best to minimize overexertion and maximize rest. It was unthinkable to have Vivian resting alone in the ice house in such a dangerous environment. At least a full strength team had to be left behind for protection. Coming to this realization, Catherine agreed with Pannis’s idea. The next morning, he and Ava would explore the tundra, but Catherine insisted that they bring Freya along. Known for constructing formidable defense terrain, a master engineer would be of great help if danger arose, buying enough time for evasive actions. With Freya present, goblin fireworks could be used for communicating, visible from vast distances on the tundra, enabling the three girls left behind to provide timely assistance.
And so it led to the scene in the early morning, where the three girls leaned against the door of the ice house, watching Pannis leave with the other two. Suddenly, they felt an odd sensation, as though anyone watching them might misconstrue their situation.
"It’s just us three left again." Catherine disregarded the strange feeling and turned to the other two girls, "Ever since Pannis joined us, we’ve never been alone together in the wild, have we?"
"Yes." After the frost spirits departed, Lina returned to her original self. However, instead of being playful, she was smiling softly, "It feels like such a long time ago, yet it also feels like it was just yesterday. Looking back, those were indeed memorable times."
"Thinking back, we three indeed underwent a lot of danger." Vivian retreated back into the ice house ahead of the others, her voice echoing from within, "I’ll never forget our adventures on Fermadar Mountain; it’s etched in my memory forever."
"That must’ve been the closest you’ve ever come to death." Catherine shared with an afterthought, "After all, who would’ve thought several dozens of enraged fox monkeys would ambush us from the treetops. They proved to be too smart, effectively luring us into their ambush during their swarm hunt. They even knew to erase traces of their trap, making them a nightmare for adventurers although they are only Silver Rank."
"Silver Rank is already formidable." Lina pushed Catherine back into the ice house, "We were only newly advanced to Gold Rank back then, with our teamwork not quite there yet. A group of Silver Rank beasts could easily send us running, let alone if they ambushed us. That was really dangerous, if you hadn’t rushed over to shield us, we’d probably have ended up as fox monkey food. That was when your stomach was gashed open, with intestines spilling out. It was quite the challenge to bring you back from the brink of death. It was from then on, Vivian and I resolved to look up to you as our big sister, and no matter how hard you try, you will never get rid of us. Isn’t that right, dummy?"
"Yeah, you’ll never get rid of us." Vivian nodded, her innocent face beaming with a mature smile, she spoke softly, "From that day onward, I decided to trust you with my life forever. So, get ready to look after me for a lifetime, Catherine. And, Lina, you’re the real dummy. You’re the idiot who stepped on that floor slab in the ruins of Priferry Rex city. If you hadn’t triggered that collapsing floor, all the Alchemy knowledge in Priferry Rex would’ve been mine. Mine!"
"Right, especially all the hidden treasures of the Rex royal family." With a mischievous smile on her face, Catherine joined in, "The bedrooms embellished with countless gems, statues made of gold, seventeen original paintings from famous artists six centuries ago, and twenty Crystals worth ten thousand Tael each. They should’ve been all mine. Mine!"
"Enough, you two." Lina rolled her eyes in exasperation, "I admit, that was my mistake. But shouldn’t that be attributed to the lack of an explorer? It was because of that incident we decided to recruit an explorer into our team. So, if it weren’t for me stumbling into that trap, Pannis might not have joined us. So, you should be thanking me for my mistake. Anyway, who knew we’d stumble upon somebody as significant as him, although he really doesn’t act the part. He’s just...numskull."
"Hahaha, that’s a very apt description, but we mustn’t let him find out," Vivian whispered, "Even though he’s aware that we know about this now, as long as he’s not certain, we can still pretend not to know. Otherwise, he might threaten to leave again. Last time, during my surgery, it was not easy convincing him to stay. But who knows when he might change his mind again. I don’t want him to leave, I can’t imagine what our life would become if he does. I don’t want that to happen."
"Do you feel the same way?" The three girls looked at each other, their eyes filled with an odd emotion, as if they were being cautious of each other for the first time. After a while, Catherine gave a self-deprecating laugh, averted her gaze, and said, "We’re thinking too far ahead. It’s hard to say what will happen in the future. It’s too early to worry about anything. Let’s just let time decide everything. But no matter what, we will always be sisters, don’t you think?"
"Of course." Lina closed her eyes and nodded agreement, "Even though jealousy once overtook my rationality, that cost me the other half of my soul. I won’t do such foolish things anymore. No matter what the eventual outcome is, it will never affect our bond. Absolutely not."
"What are you guys talking about?" Vivian was as cunning as a little fox. She blinked her large eyes and swished her blue ponytail, "I’ve said from the start that I’m sticking with you guys for life. Big sis, there’s nothing that could change this decision, not even the outcome of some strange battlefield."
"You’re the craftiest," Catherine teased Vivian, striking her head before hugging the two younger girls. Despite that, all three of their gazes turned to the icy wilderness outside of the open door, focusing on the direction where Pannis, Ava, and Freya had disappeared.
"Something seems off," Catherine said, her eyebrows furrowed as she glanced outside, "Did you notice? The mist outside seems to be thinning."
"It does seem a bit thinner," Lina agreed, "But isn’t that normal?"
"No, Pannis said that the mist on the Ice Plains never dissipates, and its thickness never alters," Catherine stood up and looked out the door, "When something constant changes, it means something unusual is happening. There’s definitely something wrong with the thinning mist."
Indeed, as Catherine mentioned, the mist outdoors was gradually fading, and even the surroundings were becoming brighter. With the arrival of sunlight, the morning wind on the Ice Plains seemed encouraged to frolic joyously, brushing past Catherine and stirring her long, black hair.
"The wind is stronger causing the mist to thin, that’s the case everywhere," Lina said, "The change in concentration should be due to this reason. It’s not a deliberate change from the mist itself, so it should not be considered unusual, right?"
"No, Big Sis seems to be on to something," Vivian suddenly pulled out a few notebooks, flipping through them rapidly, "I remember seeing something about this somewhere. Let me look for it... Ah, found it!"
With a gasp, Vivian looked up, her expression serious as she uttered one word: "Ice Storm." (To be continued. If you like this work, please vote for it on qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation. For mobile users, please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
