Chapter 693: Chapter 55: Assistance of Frost Spirit_1
Wisps of smoke were rising from the fire pit, drifting through the hole in the roof and spreading outwards. The door of the Ice House, after everyone had entered, had been sealed off by the frost spirits. The thick ice walls kept out the harsh cold, while holding the warmth within the Ice House.
The leaping flames roasted neatly-cut thick strips of meat. Under the fire’s tongue, large droplets of grease sweated from the tender meat, dropping into the fire and hissing satisfyingly. As the flames roasted, an intense fragrant aroma wafted from the meat, filling the Ice House. The adventurers, having been hounded by fatigue and the cold all day, felt an indescribable sense of comfort and satisfaction from being bathed in this sudden warmth and delicious aroma.
The girls had removed their shoes and were sitting around the fire, warming their frostbitten hands and feet. Despite the sturdy cotton boots they wore, the temperature around them was just too low and after a hard day on the road, their limbs were frostbitten to the point they didn’t feel like their own anymore. Now, under the fire’s warmth, blood circulation resumed in their frigid limbs. The reassuring heat brought life back to their numb limbs at the same time, causing a prickling sensation. Even Vivian, who had lost her sense of touch, was compelled by Catherine to do as they did. After all, numbness doesn’t mean immunity from frostbite, and in this brutal environment, numbness could sometimes be even more lethal than the cold.
"It smells so good." Freya said as she rubbed her hands by the fire: "In the cold winter, we all huddle around the fire. The flickering firelight cast a dancing light on each face as the fragrance of food pervades the surroundings and the aroma of strong liquor lulls the senses into a state of blissful inebriation. Some play the lute while others sing aloud, the Beastman dances the wildest dance of the plains beside the fire, everything by the fireside feels poetic, like the protagonists of an epic story descending from the legends to earth. Hey, I’m warning you, I didn’t say anything this time; if you dare hit me with your magic staff, I’ll fight back."
"Tsk." Regrettably, Vivian gave a little grunt, put down the magic staff that she’d just raised, looked at the greasy meat roasting on the fire, and swallowed her saliva, "Perhaps, the lack of stress is what’s making me happy. Nowadays, I’ve developed a taste for anything, and I have a good appetite."
"So, basically you’re saying you’re hungry." Freya licked her lips expectantly, "I’ve decided that I’ll eat ten pieces, plus two large pieces of bread. That should be enough to satisfy my appetite and sustain me through the night."
"Dream on." Catherine snorted, lifted the corner of her mouth, "I’ll permit you to only eat four pieces. And for bread, you’re allowed just one piece and there won’t be any dessert because you’ve had too much food for tonight."
"Sister, you are truly ruthless." Freya said with shock, "Having toiled all day, you can’t deny me food. If I don’t eat enough now, I won’t have enough strength for tomorrow’s journey and combat. I might even get mauled by a magical beast. Would you accept me becoming magical beast fodder?"
"Rest assured, with your build, a magical beast wouldn’t be able to eat you; it would die trying," Pannis replied, even while cooking. After a single glance at Freya’s pitiful gaze, he retreated with his head lowered, continuing with his work.
"Don’t even start." Catherine turned her head away from the beautiful princess’s sparkling eyes, "The food portion I’ve set for you should be enough to last you through the night. Your desire to eat more is simply you being greedy. We will also have breakfast tomorrow; we won’t let you trek on an empty stomach. Give it up."
"Evil woman." Freya hid in the corner clutching her head; even if it were a stone statue that saw her pitiful gaze, it would shatter due to heartbreak. Of course, if it saw her entire body, it would probably shatter too, but for an entirely different reason.
With a sizzle, Pannis picked up a brush soaked with the sauce and honey, diligently applying it on the fragrant seared meat. The semi-cooked meat, under the effect of the honey, took on a faint golden hue. The rich aroma of the meat, the sauce, and the sweet scent of the honey all mixed together, thoroughly stimulating the girls’ appetites.
"I’ll take that piece, plebeian." Lina, like a haughty queen, lifted her head and looked down at Pannis in a condescending manner. Pointing at a perfectly cooked strip of meat, she said, "Also, extra butter on my bread, please."
"As you wish, Your Majesty." Pannis replied resignedly, complying with Lina’s requests. He placed the golden-brown meat on her plate and spread a generous slab of butter on her warm, soft bread before respectfully handing it to her. Taking the tray, Lina maintained her composure, discreetly sniffed at the food, and proclaimed arrogantly, "Not bad, plebeian. You shall serve as my personal chef henceforth."
"That really is a scary thought." Pannis sighed, distributing the roast to the frost spirits who couldn’t wait any longer, reminding them, "This is specially prepared for you, just like old times. It’s heavily flavored; you should like it. Once we are done eating, and you’ve had your fill, we can discuss serious matters."
Then, the four frost spirits began to wrestle each other inside the Ice House over the four plates of food. Theoretically, frost spirits don’t need to eat; as long as there are sufficient free-floating Ice elements in the environment, they can absorb them directly, remaining strong forever. Food, to them, is not so much pointless as it is a burden. After they chew and swallow, they will try to convert any usable elemental energy in the food to ice element, and the rest will be excreted in the form of elemental energy through the skin. Therefore, the energy they can gain from eating is miniscule, and they even need to expend a portion of their energy to deal with the food, often expending more than they gain. Hence, from a logical perspective, no one would be silly enough to eat.
