Chapter 687: Chapter 51 Flame_1
The transparent film seemed light and thin, yet contained an incredibly powerful force within its slim layer. Judging by the degree to which the ice block was being compressed, even a Legendary Rank professional would surely be strangled if captured by the film without their Aggression Shield activated. Even if they activated their shield, it was uncertain whether they would be able to tear through the film and escape while the shield was under constantly under attack. From the effects of Catherine’s sword and shield earlier on, it was clear that the bizarre creature was remarkably resilient. It was highly likely that normal weapons couldn’t cause any damage to it.
"I’ll go take a look." Pannis waved to the girls behind him and said, "You wait here. Don’t worry, my reaction speed is faster than it. Even if it tries to envelop me, I can dodge it even at close range."
"Be careful." Catherine didn’t try to stop Pannis. In order to comment on a foreign enemy, it was necessary to understand it in depth first. Since Pannis was confident that he wouldn’t be harmed by the film, there was enough reason to go and check it directly. However, even with confidence, accidents inevitably occur. Catherine still whispered wing, "If there’s a problem, retreat. If that doesn’t work, we’ll find a way to control it and then research it."
"Yes, I understand." Pannis nodded and marched quickly towards the film wrapping the ice block. He circled round the ice block, used several tools for testing, and then finally began carefully removing his gloves and touched the film a few times. Even with Pannis’s perception, it was difficult to detect the film around the ice block. When he touched it, he could feel that it was a highly elastic object with the cold temperature of the ice block itself. Seeing that the film didn’t react to Pannis’s touches at all and simply continued to wrestle with the ice block, Pannis put his gloves back on and beckoned to Vivian, "Come over and examine this. The rest of you should stay back. If anything happens, you’ll be able to back us up."
Vivian happily ran over to Pannis’s side. She was about to start studying it when she encountered a problem. The Mage’s body didn’t have much sense of touch. In the past, when she wanted to examine something through touch, she would directly touch it with her facial skin. But facing this bizarre entity she’d never seen before, it would be reckless to put her face near it. So she let out a sigh at her predicament, pulled out several tools from her bag, and began to examine the ice block and the film around it.
Five minutes passed before the ice block inside the film finally couldn’t resist the pressure of the shrinking film and shattered into pieces. The fragments were wrapped up into a spherical shape by the film and shook back and forth on the smooth icy surface. Pannis instantly moved, pulling Vivian away quickly from the ice-ball. The moment he left, the film unwrapped, letting the crushed ice scatter on the ground. Perhaps it realized that what it had wrapped was not a real organism or that it couldn’t catch these humans, the film discarded the pile of crushed ice and began to slowly contract into a ball smaller than a fist. It bounced and rolled on the ground like a real ball, gradually disappearing into the surrounding mist. The six of them stood dumbly, watching the ball get farther and farther away, too amazed to even speak.
"Its elasticity is incredible," Vivian said. "As you saw, its original core was so small, but once it expanded, it could stretch to six or seven meters long. If it wasn’t for its elasticity, that would be impossible. Not only that, I just analyzed its composition; it’s very unique. In fact, I couldn’t tell what it was made of, only that it contained many unknown substances. However, there is one discovery--it is primarily composed of an Ice-attribute Element. But its texture doesn’t look like the purity of an Elemental Creature. It seems to be somewhere between living and non-living; you could probably call it a semi-living creature."
"Do we have any relatively effective coping methods?" Catherine asked, "I don’t think physical attacks are very effective."
"Yes, indeed, unless your physical attack exceeds a certain level, you can hardly do any harm to it," Vivian picked up a piece of intact ice and said, "Just like this ice block, you can kick it, hit it or cut it, but apart from changing its shape, you won’t have any real impact on it. But..."
"Using a flame?" Catherine instantly understood why Vivian used the ice block to illustrate and interjected, "or should I say a rise in temperature?"
"Yes, that’s the simplest method," Vivian nodded vigorously, "Actually, while I was testing it just now, I secretly stimulated it a bit with a fire attribute element, so it quickly shrank and left. And according to its composition, it should indeed fear constant temperature rises. But here, it isn’t so easy to light a fire or maintain a constant temperature rise. I’m worried that when we need it, Freya, you may not be able to light the goblin fireworks."
"I haven’t tried that yet," Freya replied, "But if the crystal energy furnace can ignite it, then the goblin fireworks won’t be a problem. So...um, did I just see things? I thought I saw a big chunk of ice rolling on the ground by itself for no reason. It wasn’t a firework, it made quite a noise when it rolled."
"Don’t bother about him." Pannis coughed a bit, subtly shaking his head at Freya. "That’s a frost spirit. We probably have three of them around us, peeping at us. If you show signs of moving towards them, they might just turn and run. So let’s all pretend we haven’t seen them, and not alert them."
"Eh? A frost spirit is just an ice block?" Lina asked curiously. "And they move by rolling?"
"Well, all elemental creatures have a second form." Pannis patted his forehead, speaking helplessly. "The Sand People have a sand form, the Fire Elementals we encountered in the Crying Cave have what they call a flame form, Water Elementals have a liquid form, and naturally, frost spirits also have their unique ice form. Their ice form is just like what Freya saw, a big piece of ice. If they don’t move, no one would take them for sentient ice."
"But this slab of ice is a bit too small compared to humans." Everyone listened to Pannis’s words without daring to deliberately look. Only Lina, unable to resist her curiosity, sneaked a peek at the ice chunk, asking hesitantly, "Is it less than half a person’s height? Are frost spirits so small?"
"They are not like humans, who all have similar body sizes." Vivian, while twisting the priestess’s silver hair to get her to face forward again, explained in a whisper, "I read in the Mage Guild’s records that frost spirits vary greatly in size. The largest one on record is a glacier over ten meters tall. Transformed into a human form, it is over six meters tall. Oh, and Lina, didn’t you say something about frost giants in a book you read? I suspect that the originals were these large frost spirits. The authors, who had never seen frost spirits themselves, probably fabricated some aspects."
"Oh, yes, there were indeed frost giants in the story. However, the book said that although they were cold on the outside, they still had blood and flesh inside." Lina shook her head and sighed, casually shooing away Vivian who was still tugging at her hair. "But I guess the reality is completely different, like the Fire Elementals."
"You two can fight later." Pannis forestalled a potential hair-pulling brawl and signaled Vivian. "You try first. See if you can attract their attention with fire magic."
"Fire magic, hmm, let me think about it. To attract their attention, I need to make it a bit strange." Vivian paced in circles, thought for nearly a minute, then suddenly clapped her hands in excitement. She started rummaging in the huge bundle on her back. After a flurry of activity, she appeared, holding several vials of potion, and said triumphantly, "Watch my performance."
It could indeed be called a performance. The young mage manipulated puppet threads to make the five vials of potion in her hands float in the air. She poured them out from five different directions. After the potions were poured out, she used magic to guide the liquid and extend it in the air. After the five vials were emptied, Vivian suddenly waved her magic staff. Pointing the tip forward, she quickly uttered a series of incomprehensible syllables. As the last syllable fell, the potion floating in the air, as if finding a vent, quickly gathered on the index finger Vivian extended. Using this finger to vaguely sketch in the air, lines made up of slim flames appeared out of thin air and gradually formed a human-like shape.
"Huh?" Lina suddenly exclaimed, glaring at Vivian with displeasure. "Why does this person’s body shape and hairstyle look so familiar?"
"Ha, it’s an illusion." Vivian, not at all worried that Lina would dare to cause trouble at this crucial moment, provocatively lifted her chin towards Lina, smirked proudly and made a whoosh sound mimicking the burning of a flame. At this sound, like a command, the human figure outlined by the flame lines ignited with a whoosh. It was quickly filled with fire from the inside, shaping into a fire person floating in mid-air. Moreover, this fire person was moving. It step by step floated towards Vivian, hovered over her open palm, twisting its body and dancing a folk dance unique to the City of Knowledge, like a real sentient being.
With the human-shaped flame emitting intense heat, even on this icy cold snowfield, the adventurers can feel a wave of warmth radiating from the flame dancer. (To be continued.
