Chapter 678: Chapter 42 The Gift Once Received_1
"Did something unexpected occur?" Catherine, taken aback, held Vivian’s head in her hands, turning it this way and that, until Vivian’s eyebrows knitted themselves together. With an awkward smile, Catherine quickly said, "Don’t worry, I was just checking if there was anything wrong. Haha, no need to glare at me like that. Okay, even though the result was positive, I still want to know, what exactly went wrong?"
"The parasitic energy creature just happened to be part of the 20%," explained Pannis. "It had already infiltrated her brain and had tightly connected itself to specific locations. If you wanted to remove the parasite, it would inevitably cause destruction to the energy in her brain. Minor damage would result in massive memory loss and she would become an imbecile. Severe damage would result in her immediate death."
"Hold on, what do you mean by ’20%’?" Catherine asked, puzzled. "Is there something I am unaware of?"
"Oh, I forgot to mention," said Pannis. "During the healing process, I realized that the parasite had already extended into her skull. There was a 20% chance it would corrode the brain, but it was not possible to open her skull for examination, so we could only leave it up to luck. However, as it turns out, our luck was not as good as we hoped."
"So, when you removed the parasitic creature, you discovered the problem?" Catherine grimaced as she contemplated what it must have felt like for a parasite to be forcefully removed from the brain. "How was it resolved?"
Vivian took a deep breath, once again recalling the event from half an hour ago.
The young mage girl was lying on a metal platform, her eyes wide open, unblinking, she watched every move Pannis made. Although the girl could not speak, she could hear the conversation between the trio, understanding her current situation fully. Nonetheless, her heart was extraordinarily calm. Memories of their past interactions flashed before her eyes, each conjuring a feeling of warmth and affection. She seemed to recall Catherine compassionately guiding her, helping her relearn how to walk like a puppet. She remembered how Lina had tearfully administered the Healing Spell on numerous occasions, mending the skin that had been worn away by her bones. She saw herself in the underground lab of the mansion, where Freya—the princess adored by the whole city—shouldered all the minor tasks like the lowest-ranking assistant, all to minimize her unnecessary energy consumption during experiments. Lastly, she saw Pannis in the perilous Magical Beast Forest. His face stern as he slaughtered one upper-rank magical beast after another, the procedural dissection of each carcass, his hands bathed in blood.
An inadvertent smile curled up from the corners of the young girl’s mouth, her blue eyes filled with joy. In her heart, she knew that having such friends and family in her life was all she could ask for. Even if she did not achieve any world-renowned scientific breakthroughs and died an obscure death, it no longer terrified her. Even if everyone else forgot her, he, she, they would remember her. They would always hold her in their minds, never forgetting her. Therefore, she decided to entrust her life to them, just as she had done during their adventures. She would entrust them with her back, her safety, and her life, firmly believing that they would use all their abilities to save her life. The mage girl had unwavering faith in this.
Pannis was holding the energy creature wrapped tightly in the threads formed by his aggression energy. Suddenly, he yelled and clenched his fingers, pulling out the energy creature locked inside Vivian’s vertebrae. Lying on the surgical table, Vivian suddenly felt her vision darken and a wave of intense pain shot up from the depths of her brain. The sensation was like having her soul ripped apart. Despite her accustomed life of enduring continuous headaches, she couldn’t help but grit her teeth, scrunching her innocent face into a scowl—she was suffering through pain that exceeded her tolerance. In the next moment, she felt a momentary lapse in her consciousness; it was as if her consciousness was swiftly leaving her body. Everything began to fade, and she felt like she was plunging into a world of silent darkness.
"There’s a problem. Cast the spell," said Pannis calmly, although he was already aware that his actions would damage Vivian’s brain and consciousness. "Fula, maintain the Lifespring Ring’s effect. Lina, continuously cast the spell; do not stop. We have done everything we could do. Now, we can only wait and see if my judgment is correct."
"What happens if it’s not?" asked Fula, continuously maintaining the Lifespring Ring’s effect. "Will she die?"
"She won’t die. The injury isn’t that severe." Pannis, fixating his eyes on Vivian’s face, replied, "But she will lose consciousness until we find the Whole Body Regenerative Auto-treatment Device and completely heal her. Whether or not she’ll lose a part of her memory after recovery will depend on her. However, I trust my judgment; it won’t be wrong."
"What judgment is that?" Lina, glowing with a light reminiscent of the Crystal Energy, asked as she continuously shed the illumination of the Divine Spell on Vivian’s head. "Whose gift was it?"
"Phew... I made the right guess." Pannis didn’t reply. Instead, he suddenly took two steps back, wiped the sweat off his forehead, and relaxed. A relieved smile stretched across his face. "You still don’t know whose gift it is?"
"So, it turns out..." Lina stopped her spell in a state of shock, even though she had stopped, Vivian’s brain continuously radiated a life-preserving and defensive power that was far more potent than when Lina was casting her spell. It was a special power only deities can possess, a divine strength beyond the worldly and mortal realm.
"It’s a gift from Denia," explained Pannis. "Maybe you didn’t know it at the time, but when Denia used your body while we were in the research center, she touched Vivian’s nape and told us that she left a gift for us. But in fact, none of us received anything that could be considered a gift. So, I suspected that the gift was left for Vivian and hidden within her body. But, I had no evidence to back up my assumption, nor could I validate it, so I never brought it up. It seems my hunch was correct. She did leave a precious gift behind, a seed of protection which would only sprout and grow when needed, protecting Vivian’s brain and soul. It appears she had foreseen everything and arranged for this."
"My lord’s gift?" Lina, sensing the divine power gradually diminishing from Vivian, devoutly bent down in a bow to offer her deepest prayers to the loving deity, thanking the deity for this priceless gift, which stopped Vivian from being taken away from her.
"Let’s wrap things up." Pannis replaced the two pieces of the cut-off cervical vertebra back into their original place, wiped his hands smeared with the blood of the mage girl, and said after Lina finished her prayer, "First restore the bones and muscles, then wait for her to wake up. It shouldn’t take too long now with the nourishment of divine energy. Even though it’s relatively weak, it should alleviate any damage she has sustained."
"Sure." Lina waved her hand and the book of magic fell back into hers. The girl opened the book and drew incomprehensible runes in thin air with her finger, chanting praises and requests to the deity aloud. Influenced by the residual divine power, the wound on Vivian’s nape healed incredibly quickly. In a few minutes, the bloody wound had healed without leaving any traces. The bones beneath the skin that hadn’t lost vitality grew back slowly under the effect of divine spells, once again covering Vivian’s spine, which had almost completely lost its function.
Only after everything ended did Fula remove the Lifespring Ring from Vivian’s head and put it back on her own. The fact that she was able to lend this sacred item given by the deity to the elf race, a crown crafted from flowers picked by the Forest Goddess herself over six thousand years ago, was indeed a surprising decision.
"Finally, it’s over." Lina finished the spell, staggered back a few steps, leaned against the wall of the Metal Fortress, covered her dizzy head, and whispered, "Now, even if we can’t find the Auto-treatment Device, her condition won’t worsen anymore, right? At most, she’ll stay just as she is, and everything will be as it was before, right?"
"Yes, in normal circumstances, it won’t worsen anymore." Pannis nodded. "Without the encroachment of parasite-like creatures, unless other diseases affect her, she will maintain her current state. However, it would be better to find the Whole Body Regenerative Auto-treatment Device sooner. After all, her corroded parts won’t heal by themselves, only a complete recovery can restore her health."
"Yes, of course, we have to find it." Lina nodded emphatically, smiling with relief as if she had put down a heavy burden, "When she is cured, she can run and jump again. It’s so strange to think about."
"I heard that, you’re the silly one." Wrapped in a shroud, Vivian abruptly sat up on the metal platform, glared at Lina, and said, "You dared to call me an idiot while I was unconscious. I won’t forget this. I will get my revenge."
"Hehe, wait till you get better and you will learn to fear me," smirked Lina. "By then, it won’t be a simple act of pinching your face as a punishment, I will spank you and let you know what real pain feels like."
"Both of you, keep it down." Pannis sighed, shaking his head. "Especially you, Vivian. You just recovered, it would be better if you rested more. Lina, carry her and let’s all go outside. It’s time we let Catherine and the others know the good news."
"Hm, how about we give them a little scare instead," Vivian’s eyes rotated with mischief as she shielded her head with the white cloth, lay flat on the metal platform and said in a stifled voice, "Just carry me out like this, hehe."
