Chapter 668: Chapter 32 Red Dragon Bast_1

Time slowly passed, the sky grew darker, and even with the reflected light of the snow on the tundra, by around six in the evening, the sky had sunk into a vague darkness. However, the villagers were burning with anticipation, for they heard a genuine, echoing dragon chant from a far-off distance. Although every decade, the villagers could catch a glimpse of the dragon’s apparition and hear its voice during their convention, those were second-hand experiences. To the worshippers, nothing could stir their spirit more than the sound of an actual dragon chant. Many villagers even devoutly kneeled, responding to the arrival of their revered one with a low, echoing dragon chant of their own.

After another ten minutes or so, using the only remaining glimmer of sunlight, they finally saw a seemingly insignificant shadow flying towards them from the far-off Dragon Mountain Range. The shadow’s pace seemed slow, but it nonchalantly got bigger and clearer. The incoming figure was a great red dragon whose smooth scales were red like fire, its dragon chant filled with fiery vigour. It had a body length of about eighty meters and a height close to thirty meters. As far as dragons were concerned, these dimensions were not particularly large; however, to humans, it was a being that commanded an upwards gaze.

As the Red Dragon Bast drew nearer, people could already hear the beating of dragon wings in flight. Many villagers had tears swelling in their eyes; they responded in unison with a faint echo of a dragon chant towards the sky. Bast paused, then replied with a dragon chant, catching everyone by surprise. The response raised the atmosphere among the crowd to a new climax, as each person reached out towards the sky, offering their sincerest worship to the dragon.

Soon, the red dragon was directly above the village. After hovering in the sky for a while, it gently landed on the grand altar. As soon as it touched down, Bast carelessly lounged on the altar and said wearily, "I’m dead beat. I need a good rest. Hell, do you think flying for two hours straight is an easy task?"

"You’ve worked hard, Bast." Pannis walked over and patted Bast’s large head, which left the villagers almost popping their eyes out in astonishment. "Once we meet Lady Mina, we will make sure to sing praises of your endeavors."

"What’s the point?" Bast spat a string of sparks at Pannis’s face. "She can’t allow me to finish early. Losing a bet is losing it. No amount of praise will let me fulfill my hundred-year term any sooner."

"That’s why I call you a dummy!" Pannis ducked past the sparks and yelled while hitting Bast’s head. "If you’d seen who was in charge of liaison with the Dragon Worship tribe in advance—and it was secretly arranged—you would have told Mina. She would unwittingly bring it up to Waren. Waren would be outraged, but, after giving you a piece of his mind, he would take over the remaining years of your duties. Would that not let you go back to your nap?"

"Eh, you do seem to make a lot of sense." Bast’s eyes lit up. He stuck out his tongue trying to lick Pannis’ entire body. After Pannis evaded his attempt, Bast cheerfully shook his head and said, "Though I would have to endure a scolding, I could avoid over sixty years of work. Yes, it’s worth it. It’s settled then, hahaha. Your humans are indeed more cunning, thank you."

"What a flatterer! What do you mean cunning?" Pannis pouted at Bast and pointed towards the girls by his side, "These are my friends. They are also coming along with me. It doesn’t make any difference to you, right?"

"Legendary, legendary, legendary, they are all legendary, huh?" Bast’s gaze suddenly settled on Ava. He curiously examined her for a while and then said uncertainly: "I did not expect your race to be still roaming the earth. Strange, how come you were not expelled from this world at the beginning of this era? Well, whatever. It really doesn’t matter. Come on up everyone. I want to finish this early, so I can go back to sleep. Make sure you talk to Aunt Mina for me. Ensure that she informs Waren."

"Then it depends on your speed." Pannis grinned evilly, "If you can’t get us to Mina’s house before eleven at night, hehe, I might just forget. You know, my memory isn’t that great, hehe."

"You devil!" Bast bellowed in rage, flapped its enormous wings, and shouted, "Hurry up. Don’t dawdle. If you delay me and cause us to be late, it won’t be my fault. Come on, come on!"

"Pfft." Catherine suppressed a giggle, stroked Bast’s large head as Pannis had earlier and gave Pannis a playful warning glance: "Bast, don’t listen to him. Rest assured if he doesn’t help you, all of us will collectively bully him until he remembers. So take your time, fly slowly. Thank you for lending us your aid."

"You’re a good person." Bast, visibly moved, nuzzled Catherine’s hand with its head, then suddenly opened its mouth and gave Catherine a big lick from bottom to top. The magnitude of lick was equivalent to one human’s height, leaving Catherine drenched in dragon saliva. Dragons usually don’t typically lick just anyone—it is a sign of friendship. They only do it with those they deem, in terms of power and position, to have the potential to be friends. If a person is ordinary or doesn’t conform to the dragons’ ideology, they would never consider licking them. "You’re much better than that guy. He used to be quite kind, but now he’s become so crafty. I like you better, I’ll be friends with you. I won’t deal with him any longer."

"Well then, thank you." Catherine gave Bast’s thick neck a hug, which was almost thicker than her waist, and said with a smile, "Since we’re friends now, could you please take all of us to Lady Mina’s home, like Pannis has mentioned?"

"Sure, I love helping my friends." Bast looked pleased, dropping his wings onto the ground, "Hop on, I’ll fly as fast as I can. Don’t worry, I’m the third fastest in my generation."

"Right, because there are only three dragons in your generation." Pannis sneered at Bast from the side, saying: "You’re the third fastest among three dragons. Wow, that’s fast indeed, haha."

"Nonsense, just nonsense." Bast became irritated and spurted out a flame towards Pannis in annoyance, clamoring, "Your knowledge is outdated. It’s been fifty years since a new member was hatched in our clan, so there are four of us in this generation."

"Hmm, competing in speed with an infant sibling, either a little brother or sister, huh." Pannis gave a thumbs-up, "You truly are the pride of the dragon clan. I’m starting to admire you."

"Stop teasing him all the time." Catherine realized now, that although the red dragon Bast looked enormous and likely older than everyone else combined, for dragon kin with such longevity, he might still be a child. His character is as adorable as a child’s, which made Catherine could not resist patting Bast’s head, saying, "You’re cold-hearted as to tease such a cute child. Bast, just ignore him. I believe you’re really fast. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been asked to pick us up. So don’t be angry. If you get a chance to visit the human world later, I will treat you to some great food in the City of Knowledge."

"Really? I love delicious food." Bast raised his head excitedly, "When I reach adulthood two thousand years from now, I’ll definitely go find you. By then, don’t forget to take me out for food."

"Um, that’s... a bit difficult." Bast’s words gave Catherine a headache, and she twitched the corners of her mouth, saying, "By then, you’re free to unearth me from the soil. If I can still be awakened, I have no objection."

"Okay, I forgot that you’re a human." Bast shook his head regretfully, "It seems there is no chance now. But it’s okay, I will always remember having a friend like you. You’re my first friend of another race. Come on then, hop onto my back. I’ll put up a shield to prevent you from being blown away. Well, it might be a little cold, but I think as Legendary Rank professionals, you shouldn’t mind this chill."

"We’re fine with it." Catherine patted Bast’s head and climbed onto his back using his outstretched wings, waving at the girls, "Everyone, come on up quickly. It’s getting later, if we don’t hurry up, we’ll have to push it back to tomorrow."

Actually, climbing up along the dragon wing is not so simple. Bast is nearly thirty meters tall, climbing up is like scaling eight or nine floors of a magic tower. Although it’s not a big deal for Legendary Rank professionals, it’s not easy because they’re not stepping on solid stairs. The dragon wings are flexible. Although they’re robust, they slightly sink with every step, no doubt increasing the difficulty of climbing.

Thankfully, Bast noticed that everyone had climbed onto his wings. He gave a signal, lifted his wings slightly to flatten them, allowing everyone to walk onto his back directly.
