Chapter 667: Chapter 31 Dragon Worshiper_1
"Roar~~~~" The Red Dragon’s illusory figure issued a skyward howl, the echo of its loud voice causing the ice hanging from surrounding eaves to constantly crack and fall. After its lengthy roar, the thirty-meter-tall Dragon lowered its body. Its head, larger than a human body, came close to the elderly beastman. After scrutinizing him a little, it turned its gaze questioningly towards the six adventure team members standing beside the elderly beastman and asked in Common tongue: "You are from Golden Dragon Village, right? This time, you’ve used a scale, a symbol of friendship among our kind, to call upon us Guardians. Was it these humans who requested you to do so?"
"Yes, Lord Bast." The old beastman, bowing deeply, respectfully replied, "These humans came from the outside world, hoping to establish direct contact with you Giants. Seeing that they hold a symbol of the Guardians’ friendship, I agreed to help them."
"Hmm, you have gone through a lot," the Red Dragon turned its vast head towards the members of the adventure team and said in a thunderous voice, "Humans, are you the ones seeking interaction with us Drakes? This scale... Oh, it’s actually her scale. Where did you get it?"
"Obviously, it was given by the owner of the scale." Pannis, arms crossed over her chest, a strange smile on her face, leisurely said, "Otherwise, what do you think? Do you believe that any human can forcibly snatch it off a combat-ready Dragon?"
"Hmm?" Upon hearing Pannis’s voice, the Dragon was briefly stunned. Its yellow eyes blinked, carefully examining Pannis before issuing a low grunt and saying, "So, it’s you. What’s your name again? Hmm, I forgot, never mind. It’s not strange if it’s you anyway. But why are you back? You’re still alive? I thought you ..."
"I don’t die that easily," Pannis interrupted the Dragon’s words with a smile, "On the other hand, I didn’t expect you to be the one responsible for communicating with the Dragon Worshippers again. Weren’t you supposed to be asleep already? How come you’re still awake?"
"Lost a bet, that’s why." The Red Dragon harrumphed discontentedly, "As a result, I was forcibly assigned an extra hundred years of duty. Otherwise, I would have hurried away to sleep already. So tired, and it’s really bothersome. Can time please hurry up?"
"Don’t think that I am unaware. Even when you’re in charge of communication, you still sneak in a nap," Pannis teased, "Last time, your father berated you for falling asleep, but my guess is, you probably didn’t change your ways even after the scolding."
"Don’t bring up that incident again." The Red Dragon lay on the ground, using a claw to cover its head in a very human-like manner, grumbling, "You all happened to witness that one lapse of mine, so unlucky. Hmm, do the people around you look different? Where are those who were with you before, especially that interesting short fellow? Bullying him was so much fun."
The smile on Pannis’s face faded as she softly replied, "You know, Bast, we are not like you, humans die."
"Oh, right, I almost forgot." Bast tapped his head as his illusory figure spat out a stream of illusive sparks, "You’re so troublesome, always dying so quickly. This means, I won’t be able to see that short fellow again, right?"
"Yes." Pannis’s voice turned very desolate as she sighed, "None of us will see him again, not just you."
"What a pity." Bast twisted his neck awkwardly, "What brings you here this time? Still want to meet Waren?"
"No, we wanted to meet her first." Pannis pointed at the golden scales, "There are some things we need to discuss with her before considering whether to bother Mr. Waren."
"Then come along." Bast asked, not comprehending, "Why do you need contact? You know the way, just go straight to her lair. Why bother me when I’m sleeping?"
"As expected, you are lazing about again, huh. Hehe." Pannis scoffed chucklingly before stating, "Can you come pick us up? We have quite an important matter to discuss with her, but someone is not in the best condition for a long journey. Can you help us out?"
"Such a bother." Bast swung his head with the force of an annoyed puppy, grumbling displeasingly a few times before agreeing, "Wait for a moment. I’ll come pick you up soon."
"Absolutely not. We cannot wait any longer." Pannis pressed her forehead as if she were aching, "If you say you’ll be here in a moment, we’ll probably have to wait for half a year. You’ll have to come right away, we don’t have much time to wait."
"So demanding, really annoying." Bast muttered under his breath. Although it was a mutter, due to his size, it sounded like a roar to humans: "Alright, alright, I’m setting off now. You are in Golden Dragon Village, right? Stay in the village and do not wander around. I’m leaving now. If I can’t find you when I arrive, I won’t wait. I’ll just turn around and leave."
In the mirage on the altar, Bast lazily rose from the ground, stretched a long lazy stretch like the old Beastman, then shot upward and discharged a burst of fire. Only then he left his lair and exited the scope of the mirage.
"All set." Pannis shrugged and said, "At least he’s coming now. Let’s just wait here. The Magical Beast Forest may be large, but given a dragon’s flight speed, it should be less than two hours before the dragon arrives here. Huh? Why are you all staring at me?"
Pannis’s last question was directed to the villagers, because after he severed the connection with the dragon and retracted the golden scales, he found that all the villagers, including the old Beastman, looked at him with peculiar eyes, as if they were gazing at a deity. However, upon further reflection, there was nothing strange about it. As Dragon Worshippers, dragons were like gods to them. Many villagers could only witness the mirage of dragons during the grand assembly held every ten years. But Pannis displayed familiarity with the dragon, and even managed to have the dragon reluctantly come to meet them, which was enough to warrant the villagers’ reverence.
The old Beastman was rubbing his horns excitedly, and his speech grew a little faster than usual in excitement, "Did Bast just say he would come to our village personally?"
"If I heard correctly, that’s what he said." Catherine nodded and said, "It won’t be long. Elder, if you are tired, go back and rest first. Same for the villagers, you all should go back as well. Even if you want to see the Guardian, waiting until he is nearly here to come out is enough. There’s no need to keep waiting here. The weather is so cold, standing in the snow all this time is not good for your health."
"Give it up, they won’t leave." Pannis whispered, "If I told you, that a mountain of gold coins would appear here in two hours, and asked you to go home first and come back after two hours, would you go?"
"Of course not!" Catherine’s eyes widened, "What if I miss it by going home? Even if I don’t end up missing it, I want to witness the moment the mountain of gold coins appears, otherwise, these two hours would be the most torturous anticipation."
"Exactly, they feel the same way." Pannis spread his hands, smiling helplessly, "Getting them to leave now is harder than winning a fight against a demigod. Their obsession with dragons is no less than your fixation on gold coins."
"Is it really that hard?" Catherine seemed unsatisfied with Pannis’s comparison of her with the gold coins. She scoffed, "I could go fight against a demigod right now and still win. Don’t believe me?"
"My apologies, can we continue this conversation without the sword, please?" Pannis always admitted his mistakes so quickly, "Anyway, the point is, let them wait together here. If you insist on sending them away, they might end up sick from holding in their excitement."
Catherine heaved a sign of resignation and could only agree with Pannis’s suggestion. Thus, around seventy to eighty people just casually sat in the open space around the altar covered in thick snow. Only then did the girls have the peace of mind to carefully observe these Dragon Worshippers whom they had only heard about in rumors. These people, regardless of age or gender, all had dragon tattoos in various sizes in different parts of their bodies. Besides the tattoos, most of them looked no different from ordinary people, except that they seemed particularly resistant to the cold. They weren’t bothered by sitting in the snow. They exuded a natural aura of peace and tranquility. Being among them could bring unconscious calmness, and inner desires would also diminish considerably.
"Their lives seem monotonous, but they appear to enjoy it." Lina commented out of curiosity, "I really want to know, what do they do inside their houses when they are not carving ice sculptures."
"Believe me, you would be disappointed," Pannis shrugged, then said with a weird laugh, "They actually do nothing. On days when they don’t need to work, they just sit inside the houses, daydreaming and sleeping."
"Daydreaming?" Lina almost shouted out in surprise, "Impossible! How can they daydream all their leisure time away? That type of life is too horrifying."
"You are not them, how can you be sure that they are not truly enjoying their lives?" Pannis retorted, "During my previous visits here, I talked to some worshippers. According to their understanding, we outsiders are the ones who are strange. We cram our lives full with various things. It’s horrifying to them. They believe that the essence of truly enjoying life is to lie in the cave, oh, I meant their homes, silently watching the time pass by, watching the sunrise and sunset, snowfalls, and snow melting. On the other hand, they see us actively filling our days with countless tasks as foolish as burdening ourselves with countless shackles."
"I, I really can’t understand this." Lina said blankly, "No book ever mentioned such bizarre thinking."
"Of course, no one has this idea except for the Dragon Worshippers and the Drakes themselves," Pannis said with a bitter smile, "Actually, I can’t really comprehend their unique thinking either. However, even though we can’t understand it, we can’t deny that they indeed enjoy their way of living." (To be continued.
