Chapter 666: Chapter 30 Transmitting Information_1
It took about a minute for the door, as high as two people, to slowly open. What came out from the door was an elderly beastman from the Cow Clan, leaning on a walking stick. His pointed horns had turned grey due to old age, and his gait was unsteady. Still, his voice remained loud, though the words he spoke were largely incomprehensible to the girls.
Upon opening the door, Mackervillain and the village’s beastman elder looked at each other, letting out a series of roars. Their roars weren’t like the languages of other intelligent races, and more akin to pure shouting. However, those familiar with the Drakes could tell that these were modified versions of dragon shouts.
Ever since Yarra, the creator god, birthed the Drakes as guardians, the dragon’s roar echoed across the land. Their roars naturally carried incredible power, each syllable capable of channeling environmental energy and producing a remarkable effect. Once, goblins, envious of this power, attempted to mimic the dragon’s roar. However, lacking the support of a dragon’s body, they couldn’t fully utilize this roar. Even if they managed a call, they struggled to produce the effortless effects of the Drakes. Even the slightest effects would consume a vast amount of their mana. Hence, such an impractical ability was only used by the goblins in places like password locks. By the Fourth Epoch, knowledge of the dragon’s roar had almost disappeared due to the rare sightings of dragons. It was surprising to find that the inhabitants of the Dragon Worship Autonomous Prefecture communicated through dragon roars. Even though their roars didn’t cause energy fluctuations, it was evident they were indeed dragon shouts.
After the two men roared at each other for a while through the door, the elder beastman walked back into the house without closing the door. Mackervillain remained at the door and told the six members of the adventure team, "I’ve finished what I had to do. I’ve also introduced you to the elder. Go in and talk to him. I’m going back to my village."
"Mr. Mackervillain." Catherine gave a deep bow to the imposing Mackervillain. "Though our journey was short, you taught us a lot about the Drakes and Dragon tribes’ culture and traditions. Without you, we would have needed multiples of the time we had to achieve what we have now. So, thank you. We may not meet again, but we will never forget your help, thank you."
Mackervillain put his sunglasses back on and offered them a warm smile for the first time. He then waved goodbye and, without a word, turned and sped off down the path he came from. He disappeared amidst the scattered buildings of Golden Dragon Village in no time and was completely out of sight.
"The people of the Dragon tribe are indeed intriguing as you said," Catherine remarked while watching Mackervillain’s departure. She then asked Pannis, "Is this way of saying goodbye a custom of the guardians?"
"Of course, for the Guardian race, all intelligent life forms have short lives." Pannis replied, "Their lives are measured in tens of thousands of years. In many instances, these creatures would have seen several generations pass within the timeframe of their nap. Unless it involves their kind, they see no difference between a separation and a final farewell. This tendency has rubbed off on the members of the dragon tribe, hence they tend to be quite indifferent about such matters."
"Beautiful Bubble Fruit flowers bloom on the branches and then fall without a trace. When we suddenly recall their past beauty and turn to search, we can only witness the sad beauty of petals scattered in the wind." Freya gripped her heart and, with an emotional look on her face, closed her eyes and commented passionately, "In their eyes, our lives are like flower blossoms on a branch, often dissipating in the blink of an eye, as if..."
"Oh, shut up." Vivian gave Freya a push. "Hurry up, you’re blocking the wide doorway, and others can’t get in. Come on, stop dawdling."
Pannis and Catherine shared a resigned smile, and they all entered the building together, closing the door behind them. As anticipated, the seeming two-story building was actually a single floor. Not only that, but the large building only had one room that combined the kitchen, dining room, bedroom, and living room. Apart from the four walls, there was no partition. A few supporting stone columns held the roof, leaving a wide, open space. The furniture was minimal; other than a few boxes and storage cabinets by the wall, there was only a large bed, a table, and some chairs. However, a thick layer of animal skins covered the stone floor, making it as soft and comfortable as carpet to step on.
"Come in and sit down." The elder Beastman didn’t traditionally invite the six guests to sit around the table. Instead, he casually took a seat on the thick animal skins. Although his voice differed from Mackervillain’s, it was similarly slow and deep. "Our people seldom speak the common language. Although I haven’t entirely forgotten it, I’m not fluent anymore. But guessing that you all can’t understand Drakish, we’ll have to make do with the common language. Do your best to understand in the meantime."
"It’s no problem. We’ve conversed many times with Mr. Mackervillain. We are accustomed to it." The six people mimicked the old Beastman, sitting down on the skins. Catherine sat primly, her knees bent to one side, and said earnestly, "Things are urgent, hence we came to visit without prior notice, we hope the elder would not blame us."
"Oh." The old Beastman took his time before answering. With some difficulty, he asked, "I heard from Mackervillain, you’ve helped him eliminate several enemies of the Guardians, and you yourselves hold the friendship of the Guardians. You wish for us to help you communicate with the Guardians on the Sacred Mountain and lead you into it?"
"Yes." Catherine nodded. Pannis timely took out the box containing the golden scales, opened it and placed it before the old Beastman. Catherine extended her hand to indicate, "This is the Guardians’ token of friendship, we hope that the elder can see that one of us is a friend of the Guardians, and make an exception to help us get in touch with the Guardians and allow us to enter the Dragon Mountain Range."
"A warrior Guardian?" The old Beastman’s pupils constricted, no longer maintaining his previous casual outlook. His gaze towards the scales became much more reverent, and he admired them for a long time before slowly saying, "Very well."
"Huh?" Catherine became unexpectedly startled. Having always been in charge of the adventure team’s external negotiations, she had thought all the way here about how to explain their intentions, how to get them to agree when they hesitate, and how to make them change their minds when they refuse. However, she never expected that the old beastman would agree simply after looking at the scales. All her preparation was in vain and she felt like she had thrown a punch only to hit empty air. This bewildered the typically calm and composed Catherine for a few seconds before she sighed and asked, "Don’t we need to do anything?"
"A friend recognized by the Guardians is a friend to the Dragon Worship clan." The old Beastman spoke slowly, "To contact the Guardians is not a big issue. Now, whether they allow you to enter the Sacred Mountain or even lead you in themselves after the contact is established, that is something for the Guardians themselves to decide. We are only responsible for making the contact."
"Okay." Catherine said with a wry smile, "What do we do now?"
"Follow me now." The old Beastman yawned lazily, stood up leisurely, opened the door shakily, fastened his skis, and walked outside to let out a long roar which echoed throughout the Golden Dragon Village. After the roar, the old Beastman waved lazily at everyone to follow him, and then slid towards the small altar in the center of the village. Many villagers who heard the roar came out of their homes, shuffling as if they’d just woken up, and they all headed towards the same destination. As more and more villagers gathered around the small altar, the environment became noisy. The villagers would occasionally roar to each other, trying to figure out what was happening.
The old Beastman let out another long roar, probably explaining to the villagers what was happening. The bewilderment in the eyes of the villagers, who had been suddenly summoned, gradually subsided, and replaced with heartfelt joy. Some especially excited villagers even let out delighted roars that sounded like cheers.
"Adventurers, come up here." The old Beastman standing on the small altar said. Though it was called a small altar, it was only small in comparison with another larger altar; in reality, the altar was not small at all, big enough for seven or eight people. Once everyone had climbed onto the altar, the old Beastman pointed to a stone platform in the center of it. "Just place the Guardians’ token of friendship directly on the stone platform. I will finish the rest of the work."
Pannis stepped forward and placed the Gold Dragon’s scale on the stone platform, as instructed. As soon as the shiny scale was taken out, the villagers let out a gasp of admiration, full of envy. The old Beastman paused for a moment, then moved behind the stone platform, facing everyone. He closed his eyes and let out a series of roars. It was not exactly a roar... though it sounded like one, it was filled with strange rhythm, almost like an odd melody. As he roared, the villagers commenced a collective chant in tune with the Beastman. Bewildering and magical energies from the roars of the Dragon clan caused a slight fluctuation all around, drawing more and more energy towards the altar.
The roaring suddenly ceased. All the villagers of the Dragon Worship clan simultaneously let out a cheer and deeply bowed towards the altar. Behind the old Beastman, the phantom of a Red Dragon slowly appeared and held its slender neck up high, letting out a grand dragon roar, once the figure had stabilised. (To be continued.
