Chapter 664: Chapter 28 Undead Transformation_1

"This is the corpse of that modified magical beast?" Vivian, holding her magic staff, sat at the low entrance of the ice house, stirring the frozen corpse of the magical beast on the ground with the end of her staff. She shook her head, "This is undoubtedly beyond the capability of the magic of this epoch. Some forbidden magics can temporarily merge two magical beasts, but they are essentially two distinct creatures. Not only will they die quickly, but they will also split into two after death."

"You seem to know quite a bit about this." With Mackervillain gracefully retreating into the ice house to give the adventure team some space to converse, Lina felt at ease with no strangers around and asked curiously, "Does your Mage Guild also study these things?"

"These are also knowledge, of course, people will research." The smile on Vivian’s face looked a little eerie, "Synthesis magic, replacement magic, potential stimulating magic, blood magic, countless mages are studying each of these magics. For those mad scholars in the City of Knowledge, not studying these forbidden knowledge would be abnormal. Fortunately, the scholars in the tower haven’t crossed the line and haven’t used sentient beings for research. Anyone found doing so would face legal sanctions. However, while no one openly does this, whether or not someone clandestinely does it is another matter. Often, if the impact isn’t too great, the Guild might pretend not to notice. Of course, I haven’t conducted research on these forbidden magics, but I have seen many others’ outcomes. Therefore, I’m sure that this couldn’t have been caused by magic."

"Right, it’s not magic, it should be directly cutting off some special body parts of other magical beasts and attaching them to another magical beast. It does indeed look like goblin technique." Pannis said, "What I find strange is how they made this magical beast use the special parts that originally didn’t belong to it so proficiently? For example, if we attached a Beastman’s tail to our bodies, even if we could control it, we wouldn’t know how to use it, right? Being able to use it normally is indeed incredible, and as far as I can remember, only goblins would have such biological technologies."

"But we discussed this before." Catherine said, "You and Lina both believe that the goblins’ technology isn’t that advanced, and it’s impossible for such finished products to appear."

"So, this matter needs to be asked to Ava." Pannis patted Ava’s head by his side and asked, "You must have this type of data from your time in the goblin research center, right? What’s your opinion?"

"This is certainly not goblin technology." Ava shook her head without any expression, rubbing her head against Pannis’ palm and squinting her eyes, "Is it only goblins that can research this technology? And it seems like you all have a misunderstanding, you forgot the existence of Sigein’s people, right? A major part of the goblin biology technology is based on the Triclops of the First Epoch. The goblins have just altered and researched these technologies more deeply. This multiple-generation biological enhancement technology that we’re seeing is precisely one of those techniques that the goblins haven’t yet fully mastered."

"So, the real masters of this technology are not goblins, but the Deities?" Catherine nodded, "So we can basically confirm now that these modified creatures are being controlled by the Divine Servants of the evil church. After all, in this era, only they would have the shadow of Deities."

"That seems about right." Pannis said thoughtfully, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall of the ice house, "But why are the Divine Servants doing this? They seem to have no reason to study these modified creatures, it’s meaningless. Even if they have managed to enhance some Demigod magical beasts through modification, there’s still a huge gap between these beasts and real Demigods. They can’t face them head-on. Why are they putting so much effort into this, doing things that are not worth the return?"

"Isn’t this one way to increase power?" Catherine asked tentatively, "If they really can modify some obedient Demigod magical beasts, that would also form quite a powerful force."

"It’s not that simple. If it were like that, the undead mage wouldn’t have died first." Pannis kicked the corpse on the ground, "From the previous battles, their control over these magical beasts isn’t strong. They can barely control the beasts’ attacks and defenses, incapable of fine control like some beast tamers. And if you look at their selection of magical beasts, they specifically selected the same kind of beast to act together, probably meaning that they can’t suppress the instinctual hostility among the magical beasts. To prevent them from draining each other during action, they would... wait, move away."

Pannis’ face suddenly changed. He harshly pulled Vivian away from the beast’s corpse and protected her, quickly rushing a certain distance away. At the same time as he shouted out, the other girls quickly rolled away from the beast’s corpse, swiftly creating a circle of space around it.

The stiffening corpse of the magical beast that Pannis carelessly discarded on the snow looked perfectly normal in the dark. However, for the Upper Rank professionals sensitive to energy, upon closer sensing, they could notice bursts of dark and oppressive energy starting to pour out from the stiff corpse, with large clouds of black smoke starting to rise from it.

"Be careful, this is the Energy of Death." As a priest of the Earth Goddess, Lina was most sensitive to the Energy of Death. Immediately distinguishing the energy type, she said solemnly, "And its density is very high. The corpse might turn into the Undead soon. Big sister, dismember it while you can to avoid it causing more trouble once it transforms."

"Hold off for now," Pannis interrupted, "Retreat, I want to assess their condition."

Miraculously, the bodies that had seemed devoid of life began to twitch. The intensity of the convulsions increased as though performing some absurd dance upon the snow. As all eyes bore into them, their eyes blinked open once again to reveal a malicious bloodshot gaze filled with murderous insanity.

"What kind of Undead is this?" Catherine’s surprised whisper echoed, "It’s not a skeleton, nor a Death Knight, and definitely not a ghoul clinging to life. What on earth have those people created?"

"I don’t know." Pannis answered gravely, "Normally, even if a body has just died, during the transformation into a Undead, the body’s flesh will burst open, leaving only the skeleton free to move. I have never seen an undead move in this form before. But, I think I grasped the goal of the Divine Servants. Modified magical beasts have limited uses, but if the modified magical beasts can transform into these special Undead after death, their utility changes. Undead manipulated by Necromancers absolutely obey the commands of the Necromancer, making them far more convenient than the modified magical beasts. If you can have a large group of Legendary Rank Undead magical beasts, with some Demigod Rank Undead mixed amongst them, the threat would be horrifying. The risk might even be akin to the catastrophe of the Return of the Dead a hundred years ago."

The peculiar Undead magical beast clumsily pushed off the ground and stood back up, glaring about menacingly. It seemed to be provoked by Pannis intentionally exuding a Demigod’s oppressive aura, growling towards Pannis and moving closer to him with each step.

"Some of its combat habits from when it was alive have been preserved though it essentially lacks all intellect. An ordinary Legendary Rank magical beast would have retreated by now." Pannis reflects as he gradually retreats to keep his distance, his aura uniquely strong due to his Demigod status, "But its movements remain stiff. It’s hard to tell whether it’s due to the rigidity from death or from frost. I think it’s probably the former."

The sound of Pannis’s voice made the Undead magical beast even more agitated, as it growled more and more frequently. But Pannis didn’t mind, instead continuing, "From its reaction, it seems its hearing is intact, which is interesting indeed. Aside from the few undead we’ve encountered that retained their wit, I’ve never known of other undead that were capable of hearing."

"Today is the 17th." Lina suddenly said, looking at the sky, "It’s still a long way off from the Wicked Night, and there’s no accumulation of the Energy of Death around here. So, how did it transform into an Undead?"

"I have no idea." Pannis shook his head, "These heretics used to be priests who worshipped the fallen God of Death. Perhaps they discovered a method to convert specific entities into the undead by utilizing the Power of Death. But, when you put it that way, I feel slightly relieved. If they were directly turning the entities into undead, then there probably wouldn’t be a large quantity of this type of undead. They are just priests, and not the God of Death itself, after all. The Energy of Death they can utilize is ultimately limited. They couldn’t possibly be like a true God of Death, capable of sustaining countless undead just by existing.".

Finally, the Undead magical beast, driven to madness by Pannis’s ignorance and indifference, roared and charged towards Pannis. However, contrary to everyone’s expectations, it abruptly faltered mid-charge and collapsed sideways onto the ground, creating a long trail in the snow before coming to a stop right in front of Pannis.

Perplexed, Pannis blinked his eyes and used his one-handed sword to prod the creature. The Undead magical beast seemed to have lost its power, its limbs weakly struggling a bit. It could be felt that the Power of Death within it was gradually dissipating, and it was reverting from a member of the Undead back to a mere corpse.

"What just happened?" Lina asked blankly as she stared at the now peaceful corpse. "Did it run out of the Energy of Death?"

"I don’t know. This event tonight has been strange from the beginning," Catherine said, shaking her head. "But not just tonight. The appearance of these two magical beasts seems oddly abrupt. They were brought into the Snowfield by a Necromancer, for us to stumble across. Then, before our eyes, they both turned into an Undead, and then fell dead again without doing anything. It all feels arranged, as if their appearance was meant to inform us what the Divine Servants were up to. Is it possible that someone is purposely helping us? Or, all this is actually a ruse, a trap to distract us?"

"Regardless, once we meet the Drakes, we should share this information," Pannis declared solemnly. "We will inevitably find out what’s going on eventually." (To be continued.
