Chapter 662: Chapter 26 The Enemy of the Wolf Pack_1

"Yes, indeed it’s a howl for help." Lina also crawled out of the ice house, bracing against the night chill to listen, then nodded, "Their howls sound urgent, as if they’ve encountered a powerful enemy. From the sound of it, it should be the snow wolves – oh, that’s pretty obvious. They’re the only ones living in these snowfields. Strange, it’s rare for snow wolves to move on a large scale, usually living scattered in groups of four or five, even when hunting they scatter. Why have so many congregated this time? It’s curious."

"How many can you make out?" Pannis asked, turning around in surprise, "Isn’t it too far to tell? Oh, I almost forgot, did Diana teach you? Didn’t she tell you why these wolves are calling for help?"

"It would be great if they could also sing you a praise song about the prairie, and maybe add a Fire Dance to set the mood –oh, these are snowfields, so it would be a hymn about the snowy plains. Yes, Diana told me to tell you all of that." Lina gave Pannis a disdainful look, "Really dumb. How could wolves’ howls convey such complicated messages? Being able to indicate roughly how many there are is the limit. There are about a hundred snow wolves over there. They have two opposing targets, but those two hold the advantage, yes, that’s all the information. Um, there’s probably only one reason they would face such strong opponents."

"What reason?" People began to run out of the snow house one after another, leaving those inside restless. Catherine asked as she emerged, "Aren’t these magical beasts supposed to be very intelligent, often automatically retreating when faced with powerful enemies?"

"Probably revenge." Pannis tilted his ear, carefully judging the distance, and replied casually, "I remember snow wolves are quite vengeful, ranking exceptionally high among all magical beasts. Sometimes their grudges can last for more than ten years, from their birth until their death, and they seem to be willing to make great sacrifices for revenge. They’d withdraw from a battle only when they absolutely can’t win. Otherwise, they would chase their enemies until the enemies are killed or have fled from the snow fields."

"Yes, that’s typical of snow wolves, it seems their enemies this time are quite formidable." Lina asked in a puzzled tone, "Pannis, are there magical beasts this powerful in the snowfields that they could confront hundreds of snow wolves and still have an upper hand and force the wolves to call for reinforcements?"

"Not to my knowledge, it might be a foreign creature." Mackervillain replied on behalf of Pannis, who looked to him for an answer: "Could be a magical beast from the forest that has carelessly wandered out. But that wouldn’t be right, didn’t come from the direction of the forest."

"I want to go check it out, big sis." Lina hesitated for a moment, then said, "You guys don’t have to come with me, I won’t go too far."

"I better come along, if not you wouldn’t make it back, and I reckon Catherine certainly won’t rest easy and will insist on coming along." Pannis suggested, "Freya, can you build up a fire here? Any kind will do, as long as it makes smoke. We might need it to backtrack in case we get lost."

"Yeah, I’ll go too, just in case there’s anything I could help with. Ava, you, Vivian, and Freya stay back as reserves. If anything happens, close-quarters combat will be up to you and Mr. Mackervillain." Given the possibility of combat, the three didn’t wear heavy coats. Instead, they used a few Fire-attribute crystal shards to create a warm zone around their bodies. They then slipped into the night in the direction of the wolf’s howl.

The moon was bright that night. Illuminating the white snow, making everything so clear that it could be seen by their sides as they crouched low, navigating silently along the snow surface in high speed. This kind of high-speed skiing in the snow put a lot of pressure on their waists and knees. However, two of the three people were physical professionals, and the remaining Lina could also use divine spells to strengthen herself. They didn’t particularly mind the pressure. The snow field under the night was silent, and their skis’ faint rustling sound as they slid on the snow seemed especially piercing in the night.

"Hoooowllll~~~" The sound of the wolves’ howling was getting closer, and you could hear not just the long howls of the wolves, but also the wolves’ deep growls. Catherine made a hand signal, and the three adjusted their postures and stopped at the edge of a snow slope. They carefully lay on the slope and peeked down.

The area down the slope had turned into an intense battlefield, the wolf pack had grown from around a hundred to over two hundred, completely surrounding two enemies. But because of the power disparity, they were only moving around the periphery, not launching a direct attack. Even so, there were still forty or so wolf carcasses scattered nearby, and many severely wounded wolves had been moved to the rear of the battlefield, licking their bleeding wounds. Among the over two hundred wolves, most were Silver Rank, dozens were Gold Rank, and there was a rare Legendary Ranked one. This kind of power dynamics was quite formidable for the snowfields outside the Magical Beast Forest, yet they still seemed to be at a disadvantage against their enemies.

As for their enemies, they were two magical beasts, one of a Legendary Rank and another of Gold Rank. Seeing these beasts, Lina’s silver hair was nearly standing on end as she fixed a peculiar stare upon the weirdly shaped creatures in the wolf pack. These beasts looked peculiar, their bodies resembling snow leopards, yet their endurance was far superior to any leopard-type magical beast, making them seem more like wolves from that perspective. Their claws appeared to carry a certain toxicity, causing enemies to bleed nonstop once their bodies were torn open, taking several times longer for the bleeding to stop. Between their fore and hind legs, they have fleshy wing membranes, which allowed them to glide three to four meters in the air with a vigorous leap. If they jumped from a high place, they could glide a considerable distance. Their teeth also seemed to bear a strong venom, as evidenced by the discoloration to a purple hue of the tongues of several corpses on the ground with bite marks, indicating these were not ordinary deaths.

If their oddity wasn’t apparent enough from their appearance, their physical abilities were certainly an eye opener. They surpassed Legendary Rank magical beasts in speed, strength, agility, biting force, vision and hearing - little wonder they could still hold their combat efficiency despite being surrounded by many snow wolves. The key was their leopard tails, which excited Lina. Upon closer examination, you could see that occasionally, a sharp bone spur would spring out from the tail end, with sharp barbs attached. Once it pierced an enemy’s body and was quickly pulled out, sometimes even the enemy’s internal organs were dragged out through the wound.

"These...these...," Lina gritted her teeth, "I will never forget...in the basement of Angus Village, weren’t these the modified creatures? Why are they here? Are there goblin ruins nearby?"

"Not necessarily." Pannis shook his head, pointing forward, "Look over there on the ground, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that corpse lies there."

Following the direction pointed out by Pannis, under several wolf corpses, there laid a human body. The body was also bloated and solid, but underneath the torn coat and padded jacket, a black shirt could be seen.

"It seems that person must also be an enemy of this wolf pack." Catherine nodded, "Did he bring these two modified magical beasts to the snowfield? If so, who is this guy anyway? Lina, can the wolf pack allow us to check the body?"

"I’m afraid we have to help them win before we can." Lina said, "Otherwise, it’s still a battlefield here. They will never allow unrelated creatures to enter the battlefield."

"Then let’s go." Catherine looked at Pannis, and upon seeing Pannis give a thumbs up indicating readiness for battle, she patted Lina on the back, "Say hello to them. We are about to make a move."

"Aaaroooo~~~’, Lina hunched low and let out a resounding howl towards the moon. As the howl lasted longer than the other snow wolves, Pannis and Catherine who had already slipped off their skis, sprang from their hiding spot at high speed, just in time after the howl stopped, and rushed straight towards the two modified magical beasts.

Under normal circumstances, if suddenly a creature barged onto the battlefield, and moreover, it was a species related to the enemy, the wolf pack would definitely attack without hesitation. But forewarned by Lina, although the snow wolves were agitated, they made no substantive action. They didn’t even mind when Lina ran on all fours into the pack. Some Gold-Rank leader wolves even walked over to rub against Lina, exchanging greetings amongst their kind.

Catherine skimmed the snow, activated the Charge of Fearlessness, and, leaving a trail in the snow, dashed straight to one of the magical beasts. The beast didn’t have time to react and was knocked over by Catherine’s Magicsteel Shield, rolling on the snow, while Catherine followed closely, wielding her one-handed sword to attack.

Fighting on snow, especially against magical beasts, it’s crucial to maintain high speed movement at all times and not get oneself sunk into the snow. Once stuck in the snow, one’s mobility would be drastically reduced, which would render oneself to be a stationary target. Both offense and defence would weaken significantly, sometimes leaving oneself in a passive position, incapable of any counterattack while merely enduring enemy blows. Catherine had practiced snow warfare at the Knight Academy, so she had a good grasp of these tactics. By taking advantage of the knight’s fast forward motion, she circled the leopard-type magical beast swiftly, leaving cut after cut on its body.

Though the leopard-type magical beast also maintained agility, every time they attacked, they were ruthlessly blocked by a large shield, unable to cause any harm to Catherine. (To be continued.
