Chapter 645: Chapter 9 - Sunny_1
The sky above the snowfield was as blue and transparent as a gem, and the golden Sun God Huront, riding his flaming sun chariot, sped across the sky above the snowfield, illuminating the pale earth. But the fiery sun’s heat was incapable of thawing the chill of the vast white plain, much less melt the thick accumulation of snow.
Soon after the sun’s reappearance, the tranquil small town was plunged once again into bustling activity. The prolonged blizzard had covered the town’s rooftops and streets with thick layers of snow. The wooden roofs creaked under the weight of nearly a meter depth of snow, as if they could collapse under its load anytime. Dawn heralded the exodus of townsfolk from their warm rooms. Mobilizing as one, families embarked on their routine post-blizzard job of snow clearance. Men climbed onto the rooftops, working strenuously to shovel off the semi-frozen snow, while women labored in the yards and on the streets, sweeping with large brooms. Young children gathered together in their light clothes, their small hands and faces flushed from the cold. They ran wildly along the streets, throwing snowballs aimlessly. Anyone who ventured near was at risk of taking a stray hit.
A peal of clear bells rang out, and twelve half-human sized, white giant dogs zoomed down the street. The dogs, cooped for days, gave vent to joyous barks as they raced along the snow-covered streets. Behind this pack, a sleek sled advanced, pulled along by the dogs. The bearded mayor sat in the driver’s seat of the sled, controlling the reins in one hand and encouraging the dogs loudly with the other. On the sled lay a few large barrels. Contained within some were soups made from palas root, a specialty of the snowfield. Blanketed in thick quilts, the spicy soup emitted a hearty steam. Drinking a bowl of it warmed the body from the stomach upwards, leading to perspiration from every pore and sweeping away any vestiges of cold and fatigue. The remaining barrels, uncovered, wafted the scent of alcohol, giving away their contents. To men of the snowplains, this was the best drink, the best medicine. No matter the cold, hunger, pain, or worry, a gulp would make everything feel better. Despite the countless deaths attributed to their indulgence, men’s fervor for it remained undiminished.
These were the complementary beverages that the town provided, especially for the townspeople waging the battle against the accumulated snow. Clearing the snow was in everyone’s interest. Still, the town offered these rewards. Even though they had little value, they revealed the community’s deeply felt concern and care for each other.
In a secluded courtyard within the town, the six members of the adventure group weren’t idle either. According to Catherine, since they were staying in the homeowner’s house, the least they could do was make sure to clean the rooftop and yard. So, the team of five legendary rank professionals and one demigod each picked up brooms and shovels, starting to work like ordinary people.
It was more accurate to say that the girls were playing with the snow under Catherine’s leadership than cleaning. Among the five girls, Vivian and Freya had lived in the Holy City for many years, rarely seeing heavy snowfall. A snowfall that covered the streets was considered heavy in the City of Knowledge. One could imagine their surprise upon their first visit to the snowfield. Lina had lived further north as a child where they didn’t even see snow, not to mention the fierce blizzards of the snow plains. As for Ava, a child who had lived in artificial space since birth, she could only understand what a snowfall was through the goblin’s crystalline network. Only Catherine, who had studied for a few years in the Knight Academy in the Falar Empire’s southern part, had experienced several heavy snowfalls. Although it wasn’t as spectacular as here, it wasn’t small either. Therefore, she led the four girls in a fun-filled snow game under the guise of cleaning.
Pannis stood on the rooftop, listening to the girls’ laughter from underneath the eaves. His eyes twinkled, a mischievous grin on his face. After listening for a moment, he quickly pushed snow off the roof with his shovel. The girls’ screams instantly filled the courtyard. Over half a meter of snow dropped from the sky, burying half of the girls’ bodies in the snow.
"Pannis!!!" The girls shouted angrily at him, "You’re done for, come down here and let us strike you dead. We promise we won’t leave you breathing."
Ruminating on the threat, Pannis knocked his knuckles against his palm, lifted his shovel and shoveled another pile of snow down. He then swung his shovel defensively, knocking away a snowball Lina had thrown at him. Bent over laughing he yelled, "Haha, you can’t hit me!"
As quick as a whistle, Ava managed to speedily toss several dozen snowballs into the air. The balls screamed through the air, leaving a trail behind, and the power they emanated dug a trench in the snow. Pannis cringed, continuously twisting his body like a contortionist, the snowballs narrowly missing him. Eventually, they melted in the air and burst into a shower of snowwater.
"Hahaha, you’ll never hit me," Pannis laughed. He pointed triumphantly at the girls and postulated, "If I fall down, you’ll all bash me. Why should I go down? Try to get me if you dare. I don’t mind if you crush the homeowner’s roof, hahaha."
"That damned guy," Catherine glanced around. She suddenly bent down, formed a snowball and hurled it at Pannis. The snowball, formed by legendary fighters and thrown with great force was akin to a stone. It rushed forward with a chilling wind, skimming past Pannis’s head.
"Haha, missed me." Pannis dodged Catherine’s snowball, joyfully throwing down more snow. He defended himself by swinging his shovel against another snowball sent by Lina. "Hahaha, you can’t hit me," he chuckled.
When he was reveling in his victory, a pile of metallic parts quietly assembled themselves into a massive cannon behind him. Implicit in the cannon’s muzzle was a snowball approximately two meters in diameter. When he was laughing at the girls, the cannon fired. The two-meter diameter snowball struck Pannis from above, turning his laugh into a scream. He was abruptly thrust into the ground, wedged in the accumulated snow.
"Oho, Freya, you’re so cruel. Didn’t you always claim that you would never give up on your love for me?" Pannis groaned as he climbed out of the snow, rubbing his waist. He mumbled, "Is this what you call love? It feels like you want to crush me to death."
"Yes, indeed. I will never give up on my love for Mr. Pannis." Freya stepped in, her smile chillingly eerie, her voice low. "But Mr. Pannis, you always refuse me. So, I thought, if you were crushed to death, then you would definitely have no power to reject my love, huh. Hehe, hehe. It must be so."
"Whoa, that’s a terrifying thing to say." Pannis chuckled nervously, backing away two steps, his face paling abruptly. He forced a smile and asked, "What are all of you surrounding me for, haha, don’t come any closer, I mean, I still have to go shovel snow, hahaha."
"You don’t have to do any more shoveling, take a rest." Catherine spoke softly, smiling sweetly. "You work so hard every day, we can’t bear to let you keep doing it, wouldn’t you agree?"
"If that’s the case, put down that broom, holding it high like that is making me nervous." Pannis stared terrified at the shovel Catherine had raised, swallowing hard, "And why all this talk about not shoveling all of a sudden? Something doesn’t feel right."
"Of course, it’s all about hospice care." Catherine continued to smile sweetly, the broom she held suddenly dropped, "I’ll teach you to spray snow on us, tease you for hiding up there and saying we couldn’t hit you."
Five girls surrounded Pannis, with brooms and snowballs flying constantly. In the laughter of the girls came Pannis’s mournful howl, "Hey, hey, that’s a shovel not a broom. Lina, put down the shovel. Catherine, don’t infuse aggression into your broom. It can’t handle the power and will break. Ava, don’t you want me to brush your hair anymore, what’s the reason for freezing the snow into a sword? Freya, don’t think I don’t know you are secretly aiming at me with a Crystal Energy Gun, I can feel the energy fluctuations. Hey, hey, you too, Vivian, aren’t you supposed to be throwing snowballs, why are you forming ice balls? They hurt a lot, ah, ah, ah, stop hitting, save me, it’s murder."
The pitiful cries of Pannis spread far and wide. Catherine swung the broom while laughing heartily, saying resentfully, "Got what you asked for, this is for provoking us, I’ll kill you, kill you."
While the six were making a ruckus, the crisp sound of bells rang out. A sleigh stopped outside the courtyard fence, the big-bearded town mayor sat on the sleigh, wide-eyed and dumbfounded at the gruesome scene in front of him. The poor town mayor forgot what he was going to say, so shocked his image of professionals was rapidly crumbling.
"Ahem." Coughing dryly, the girls swiftly straightened out their clothes and regained their serious demeanor. Catherine, with a stern face, opened the wooden gate of the courtyard. "How come you’re here, Mr. Mayor? Please, come in."
"Er, you were..." the mayor stutteringly pointed at the crime scene, "what happened here?"
"Nothing much, just warming up because of the cold." Catherine said seriously, "In this cold weather, moderate exercise is good for maintaining physical and mental health. You should try it next time, Mr. Mayor, it’s really effective."
"Is that so, hahaha." The town mayor laughed dryly, taking a glance at Pannis who was almost buried in snow, wisely avoiding the sensitive topic. "I came to bring you all palas sugar, it’s refreshing to drink a bowl after working in winter."
"Thank you." Catherine accepted the drink handed over by the mayor, casually asking, "What were you all looking for last night, did you find it?"
