Chapter 644: Chapter 8 The Chaos in the Town_1
"The blizzard has stopped." The first sentence Pannis heard when he yawned and walked out of his room. It was the third day after Lina had performed a mass healing, and they were no longer in the noisy, fusty inn, but in an ordinary house in the town.
Early the day before yesterday, after Lina had completed a mass healing for all the townsfolk, everyone returned to their rooms in the inn, intending to quietly wait for the liaison of the Dragon Worship Autonomous Prefecture to take over in four days. However, the townsfolk had other plans. The kind-hearted villagers did not disperse after the adventurers left. Instead, the men gathered in the hall to discuss. They decided to hold a town-wide banquet that night to celebrate the recovery of the sick and thank the kind-hearted silver-haired priest for her blessings to the town. Thus, unbeknownst to the adventure team, the whole town got busy, presenting their best food and treasured wines and bringing large amounts of decorations to the hall to prepare for the banquet. After all the preparations were finished, the bearded mayor came to invite the six adventurers.
Theoretically, no one was particularly eager to attend the banquet. On one hand, it might change the collective nature of the daytime healing. On the other hand, the caster girls generally had little interest in such banquets. If they were told beforehand, Catherine would certainly try to prevent the villagers from going ahead with their plans. However, since everything was already prepared, it became a sensitive matter. Rejecting the enthusiastic villagers at this point might hurt their simple hearts and passion. Similar to the dirty piece of candy offered by the little girl during the healing, it became the only option to accept repayment within the giver’s means. This would help avoid mutual discomfort.
So, from dusk onwards, the hall was filled with joy. The cold temperature and howling blizzard could not diminish the burning fervor and gratitude within people. Parties of strong liquor and whole pieces of game were continuously brought in and consumed. The villagers, cooped up for months, took the opportunity to let loose. Half-drunk villagers constantly danced and belted out songs in the middle of the hall, exuding the unique charm of the snowfield. Soon, even the initially indifferent adventurers got swept up in the festive atmosphere. Even the usually stern Lina had a bunch of mischievous kids hanging around her, performing a few basic divine spells with reluctant expressions. However, Vivian, who hardly reacted to any interaction, and Ava, who always gave emotionless responses, were exceptions at the banquet. Their unique behavior made the townsfolk slightly apprehensive. No one dared bother them, thus preserving the peace around them.
The bustling banquet lasted until late at night. Afterward, the mayor surprised them all. When the six adventurers were about to return to the inn, the mayor beckoned them with a mysterious expression. He led them to a secluded area of the town, inside a vacant house. According to the mayor, it was his property, but it had been vacant since his daughter and her family lived with her son-in-law up north. It was the perfect place for the adventurers to stay, saving them from continuing to live in the squalid inn. Everyone was delighted at this wonderful gift. Even though the girls were used to all kinds of living conditions, any normal person would prefer a better living environment if possible. Therefore, no one refused, they joyfully moved into the vacant house that night.
On the day following the banquet, the town was unusually quiet. The townsfolk, who partied from dawn till dusk, were exhausted and didn’t muster the energy to get out of bed until the next morning. They returned to their daily lives with fatigue written all over their faces. At this time, the difference between the private house and the inn rooms was striking. The girls spent a serene day around the warm furnace. Other than the mayor’s routine visit in the evening, no one disturbed them. Only when Catherine opened the door to send the mayor off did she notice a pile of assorted food neatly stacked near the door. Clearly, it was a token of the townsfolk’s gratitude.
Just when the six of the adventure team thought the day after the banquet would pass peacefully, they were abruptly startled awake in the middle of the night. The flickering bursts of light in the pitch-black night disturbed their sleep. Upon glancing out the window, they noticed numerous townsfolk holding torches, rushing around the town, seemingly searching for something. However, since the villagers didn’t come near the house, the adventurers didn’t give it much thought and returned to their rooms to sleep. The next morning, as Pannis entered the first-floor living room, he heard an emotionless remark: "The blizzard has stopped."
He rubbed his eyes and yawned, groggily looking around the room. The window of the living room was open, revealing the cessation of the blizzard outside. But the cold air still seeped in through the window, jolting him awake. Since it was still early, the girls were still asleep, except for Ava who was sitting by the window, the light reflecting off her unruly blonde hair. She was clearly awake, breathing in the fresh air and, like every day, grooming her beautiful long hair.
However, after Ava made her comment and saw Pannis approaching the window to look outside, she paused and handed her comb to him. Pannis sighed and took the comb, expertly gathering Ava’s hair. All the while, he muttered under his breath, "I thought you were always against me, considering how much you hate me. I mean, you should ignore me, so why ask me to comb your hair?"
"According to analysis, the blizzard had lessened by yesterday afternoon. It had virtually stopped by the time we saw the torch-bearing villagers last night." Ava pointed outside emotionlessly, "As for last night, the townsfolk didn’t come near us. They probably purposely avoided this area. There are no footprints in the snow around here."
"Hey, you’re ignoring me again." Pannis gently knocked Ava’s head while continuing to comb her hair, saying, "They must have lost someone. Last night, I barely heard them calling out. If they were looking for something, they wouldn’t be foolish enough to call it out."
"It seems so." Ava leaned away, comfortably squinting her eyes like a little kitten, she was only missing the purring sound. But Pannis didn’t see her expression, he continued to lightly comb through her soft golden hair. Ava’s long hair inherited from her mother Sigein was thick and silky, like, touchy smooth satin, surprisingly pleasant to the touch.
"Oh, is this a father brushing his daughter’s hair?" Without turning her head, Lina could recognize the voice. The silver-haired girl ran over and peeked out of the window. Feeling the cold air, she shrank her neck, then went back to the fireplace giggling, "Something just came to my mind. Ava, are you always sticky to Pannis because he also has blonde hair?"
"Data is unclear, can’t judge." Lina was just joking, but Ava took it seriously and thoughtfully declared, "The possibility is less than twenty-five percent. I deny the assumption."
"Lina, stop picking on Ava." Catherine led a preoccupied Vivian downstairs and made her sit on a chair covered with animal skins. She then stood shoulder to shoulder with Pannis at the bedside and looked at the footprints on the distant snow. "I don’t know who got lost. Did they find him? I hope nothing bad happened."
"Looks like they haven’t found him." Pannis said without raising his head. "They seemed to have been searching until this morning, but the cold was too much for them to bear and they had to return. But they already seem to have a clue; otherwise, they wouldn’t just be searching around the town. They should also be exploring the safe zone around."
"If they haven’t found him, they’ll probably continue today." Catherine nodded, "Should we help?"
"We’ll see. Even if you offer help now, they might not agree." Pannis shook his head, "There are some things you want to help with, but can’t. We’ll be leaving the day after tomorrow. It’s better not to meddle."
"Okay." Catherine nodded, but her expression was still a bit worried. Pannis sighed, didn’t say anything more. Knights are always like that, they can’t stand to see good innocent people suffer, even if they are not related in any way. If it wasn’t for taking Vivian into consideration, Catherine wouldn’t have been likely to agree.
"Let’s do this. If they are willing to tell us about it, we’ll ask them about the situation and see if we can help." Pannis gave in, "If it doesn’t involve something too important, we leave it be. If it will affect our appointment with Mackervillain, ignore it too. But, if it wouldn’t affect our schedule, there’s no harm in lending a hand. What do you say, your highness, the great female knight?"
"Fine." Catherine nodded and smiled at Pannis, "This time, it’s my whim. Thank you, hehe." (To be continued.
