The others also reacted at the same time, each solemnly pledging in turn. Everyone knew very well that since this arrow was brought by Flare, it was intended for use in the upcoming battle. Therefore, the secrecy of the arrow itself no longer mattered. The important thing was the remaining two arrows. The Elven race had hidden the existence of this divine artifact for thousands of years, obviously intending to use it as the ultimate weapon for a crucial moment. Now, the Elves were willing to contribute one of them for the Yarran World. That was already a huge sacrifice. If news about the remaining two arrows got out, it would harm the good intentions of the Elves.
"With this arrow, our chances of winning will increase by at least twenty percent." Lady Mina finally revealed a smile at the corner of her mouth and sighed softly. "I must say, you all brought me a significant surprise."
"So, Lady Mina, there is nothing to hesitate about," Kyle pointed at the passage ahead, "Let’s proceed. I have a feeling that the person we are looking for is at the end of this passage."
They passed through a long tunnel. Two gigantic stone doors blocked the end of the tunnel. There was no decorative pattern on these doors, only two lines of text unique to the divine races. Unlike the script at the main gate, this was no longer the sacred script, but a particular writing passed down among the upper rank deities. Kyle quietly read the inscription on the door: "All is but illusion, only death is eternal."
"Hehe, amusing," After reading the inscription, Kyle chuckled and shook his head. "It sounds so profound, but it’s baloney. If everything is an illusion, maybe everyone should commit suicide at birth since it all means nothing."
Mina did not respond to Kyle’s remarks. She stepped in front of the massive stone door, her human-like figure brimming with the power of a dragon. She pushed the stone doors, each weighing tens of thousands of kilograms, and they gradually opened to the sides with a creaking sound. As soon as the doors were opened, a gust of foul air, even worse than the outside, rushed towards them. The air, which had been stagnant for years, was highly toxic. Thankfully, their demi-god bodies protected them from being poisoned the instant the doors opened.
"Wind." Philarx, draped in a black robe, uttered a syllable coldly. A gusty wind arrived, filling the space behind the stone doors instantly, sweeping away the stagnant air inside. Instead of rushing through the stone doors, they patiently stood at the entrance, waiting for the wind to dissipate the stale air while taking a look inside. Behind the stone doors was the main hall that every temple possessed. The deity’s statue, symbolizing its incarnation, was placed there. Around the statue, hundreds of leather cushions had been arranged. However, these pads had decomposed into dust and scattered in the wind.
But they realized they were not alone. Around the statue, almost a thousand people were seated cross-legged. Most of them were just skeletons, and only a few remained in a mummified state, seeming to match Mina’s description of the battlefield.
"Are these the fanatics of Danacus?" Unconcerned about the nearly thousand corpses before them, they acknowledged that these corpses held no sign of life and showed no precursors to become undead. These were one of the rare ordinary corpses in this alternate space. Christo, who had already drawn his energy gun, re-holstered it and wiped the sweat off his palms. Desperate to hide his embarrassment from being startled, he feigned indifference, "So these followers of Grimreaper don’t turn into the undead after death. I thought Grimreaper attracted followers by promising them an afterlife as the undead."
"Who would want to become undead? Would you?" "Exactly. Would you?" "And, you were scared just now, right?" "Don’t try to hide it, we all saw it." The Winged Sisters habitually teased Christo. The goblin gunner hummed and was about to retort when Kyle’s amused gaze stopped him.
"I don’t think them becoming undead would be any better." Kyle said, "These are the most devout believers in Danacus’ church. Their power must be relatively strong; that’s why they were chosen as a power source for the deity. If they turned into undead, who knows how many demi-gods might be among them."
"No need to worry, there are no signs of them turning into undead." Flare stood up from beside a corpse. As creations of the Life Deity System, most elves were filled with life energy and were highly sensitive to the undead. If Flare was certain there was no death energy, they must be ordinary corpses. After some thought, Flare confirmed again, "On this floor, we can be assured there is no death energy. But there is an energy barrier underground. We cannot sense anything through that. We can only go down and see."
"If that’s the case, it will be much easier," Kyle said calmly, "Let’s search this floor first and then explore underground. To save time, there are thirteen of us. Maya and Tiya count as one, so we’ll form groups of three to comb through this temple. If we encounter anything unusual, switch your field to the agreed frequency, and others will immediately come to your aid. Any objections with this arrangement?"
"Not at all," Christo was the first to reply, "But how do we split the groups?"
"You all can divide as you wish, but for you," Kyle revealed an evil smile, "You, of course, will be grouped with Maya, Tiya and Dillie."
"That’s not fair," the echo of Christo’s scream resonated in the temple, "I don’t want to pair with them at all." (To be continued. If you like this work, please vote and recommend on qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
