Chapter 630: Chapter 96 As if it was Yesterday_1

"Rare to see, little trickster." Pannis leans against the door with a wave to Christo: "Every time I see you, you have a new trick. The first time you were lying on a chair, the second time you were hiding in a secret room with a cane, and the third time you were straight back in bed. Where are you planning on going next? Are you planning to hide under the bed?"

"Next time, you’ll probably have to look for me in a coffin." Christo responds cheerfully: "Hello, ladies. Seeing you covered in dust, I hope Rene didn’t capture you immediately after your return. I would feel very sorry for that."

"Not at all," Catherine and the girls bowed in union, "In response to your summons, it’s our duty to come at once. We were about to report to you anyway. Under your guidance, our mission went very smoothly and yielded good results."

"Since you ladies have serious matters to discuss, you should get to it." Odin and Antuin stood up together. Odin said, "We’ve spent quite a bit of time here today, so we will take our leave. Master, we hope that you will recover soon. The future of the City of Knowledge still needs your support."

"Alright, you’re all busy, so you can go first." Christo waved a farewell: "I won’t come to see you out, Rene please escort the chairmen for me."

"I’ll do it on your behalf." Pannis put his hand on Antuin’s shoulder, the three of them walked out together: "Let Rene rest. She has been running around back and forth to relay messages for you, it’s already been very tough on her."

Once they stepped outside, Pannis released his grip. The three men walked side by side in silence through the yard till they reached the main gate. The usually silent Odin suddenly spoke: "You got back just in time. The master... he might not hang on much longer."

"Yes, I noticed too." Pannis’s face was unreadable, and he lowered his head: "Christo is nearly a hundred and seventy years old. Though he hasn’t reached the theoretical lifespan of two hundred years for goblins, he is still considered a long-lived one. With his age in mind, it’s about time. Luckily we returned in time so he could find out the answers to his greatest concerns before his departure. This should allow him to rest peacefully. If we had not managed to return in time, we might have regretted it for a lifetime."

"You should go be with him, Kyle. We don’t know when Christo will leave us." Antuin adjusted the hood of his robe to hide his facial expressions: "The Empress cannot leave her post, so she won’t make it here in time. So, you should bid him goodbye on her behalf. After all, you can be considered his best friend. Having you by his side when he leaves will make his departure a little more pleasant."

"I understand." Pannis nodded, responded faintly: "You guys should go back first. If anything urgent comes up and we have time, I’ll notify you. By the way, Antuin, there might be hope for the girl Vivian who you’re fond of. We plan to visit the Guardians in the magical beast forest in a few days to ask some questions. If nothing unexpected happens, she should be completely healed by the time we return. And Odin, Freya is brilliant. She truly is your daughter. If things keep going like this, perhaps you can become the rare example in the human world of two successive generations of demigods."

"Then I’ll need to ask you to take extra care of her. I, as her father, just can’t control her." Odin gave a helpless bitter smile, shaking his head, and left with Antuin, leaving the small courtyard. Pannis stood at the door, staring blankly at the closed double doors for quite a while before finally letting out a big sigh. Within his long exhale seemed to be countless unspeakable emotions.

When Pannis returned to the room, the atmosphere was quite lively. Catherine was narrating the events of the past two months to Christo. Starting with the encounter on the plains, the story took nearly an hour before ending with Sigein’s departure. Catherine was in charge of the narration while Freya supplemented, livening up the atmosphere with her retelling. The description of their experiences over the two months was very engaging, keeping Christo completely engrossed. With Rene present, Catherine did not reveal Ava’s identity, but the subtle innuendos in the conversation were clear to someone as experienced as Christo. He glanced at the expressionless Ava with a strange look several times.

It wasn’t until the end of Catherine’s narration that Christo, with an excuse, sent Rene away for a while. As soon as Rene left, Christo gestured for Ava to come to him. Ava stood still for a moment before getting up and walking over to Christo. The old goblin took Ava’s hand and peered through his cloudy eyes at the blonde girl before him, as if looking at his own child: "Our ancestors actually achieved this great feat, it’s beyond my expectations. It’s a pity I was born ten thousand years too late, unable to stand behind our forefathers and witness that miraculous moment. It is truly great, the pinnacle of technology, such technology can never be replicated, what a pity."

"Aren’t you angry?" Ava asked calmly: "Aren’t you mad about how I led to the collapse of the civilization your ancestors created, or the extinction carried out by the deity against your ancestors?"

"Haha, as far as you’re concerned, you’re the most innocent. I should be apologizing to you on behalf of my ancestors." Christo seemed a bit tired, he let go of Ava’s hand and, with Freya’s help, leaned back against the pillow: "As for the deities, based on your narratives, both parties were at fault. From the perspective of my ancestors, they were indeed the victims. But from the viewpoint of the deities, their actions and decisions were wholly understandable. Anybody at the time would likely have made the same decisions. Therefore, as someone who did not live through that era, I don’t stand against any of the parties or have the qualifications to judge them. All I can say is, it was a one-sided war that was not of its time, even though the outcome was heartbreaking."

The old goblin took this opportunity to ask Ava some questions about the Goblin Era. Ava had no reservations, retrieving the relevant information from her memories to answer each query. These answers brought great satisfaction to the old man, to the extent that he forgot how time was passing. Before he knew it, Rene had already returned from outside. It was then that Christo, very tiredly leaning against the head of his bed and a satisfied smile on his face, said, "Thank you, ladies. You have completed my commission beyond my expectations. I am very pleased."

"Teacher, are you tired?" Freya sat by the bed, asking with concern, "Shall we leave first and you rest a bit? I’ll come see you tomorrow."

"I’m indeed a bit tired." Christo panted a few times and managed a bitter smile, "You guys go ahead, I have something to do. I want to chat with an old friend, I won’t keep you from resting."

Although Freya was somewhat reluctant, she still obeyed the teacher’s instructions and led the others out. As they were leaving, Catherine gave Pannis a look, and silently mouthed: "We will wait for you in the carriage."

Pannis nodded and watched as Christo sent Rene to rest as well. His frown deepened.

"An old friend, huh." The old goblin finally addressed Pannis, who was seated by the bed, "I never thought that my day would come when I am bedridden, constantly feeling the slow approach of death. Sometimes I feel like my life has been a dream. Maybe when the dream ends, I’ll find myself still a child. These past hundred years, they’ve been just an illusion in a dream. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?"

"Yeah, wouldn’t that be wonderful?" Pannis sat in the chair by the bed, his gaze fixed on the cabinet at the head of the bed, but his thoughts were far away, "Waking up to find that we were still roaming around in the Lost Forest, we just got too tired during the day and had a long nap. After waking up and finding you still young, Nellie still present, Maya and Tiya still children and Flare not having assumed the role of Elf Queen yet. We were all still so free, our days spent fighting side by side and looking forward to the future, wouldn’t that be wonderful?"

"Do you remember that one time?" Christo also perked up and got excited. "The three of us had just entered the Lost Forest and ran smack into that semi-divine Thunder Tiger."

"Of course I remember, hahaha, that was our most humiliating moment." Remembering the scene from past, Pannis started laughing, "Three legends, chased for twenty kilometers by a semi-divine Thunder Tiger. We still have no clue why it hated us so much."

"That’s because I shot it in the... lower part," Christo, pleased with himself, cackled, "I never told you guys, hahaha, that was my most accurate shot. Even thinking about it, I can feel the pain."

"So it was your doing." Pannis chuckled, "I wondered why it never gave up on us, we were almost killed by you."

"But we still won, though." Christo interjected, "Your strategy still worked out in the end. You always manage to handle everything so well, even in such unexpected situations."

"There are times when I didn’t handle things well," Pannis shook his head, "Like the time I dragged you guys to the Perpetual Icefield, we were caught in a sudden ice storm and nearly frozen to death."

"But in the end, we made it out safe and sound," Christo remarked. "If you hadn’t suggested taking turns to create a dome of warmth where everyone could heat up before making another dash to safety, none of us would have thought of it."

"You would’ve thought of it too when you were freezing to death," Pannis chuckled, "I was wearing the least and would’ve been the first to freeze to death, of course I’d be the first one to think of it."

The sunset outside the window slowly set, making the room progressively darker. Inside the dimly lit room, two old friends sat together, relishing the past. The memories of the past were so vivid, as if those beautiful days were just yesterday. (To be continued. If you like this novel, please visit qidian.com to vote and subscribe.
