Chapter 629: Chapter 95 Christo’s Home_1

"Hey, young lady." Pannis escaped from Lina’s reproachful gaze, appeared behind Freya in an instant, waved at Rene, and put on a smile that made one want to punch him: "Can’t Christo wait any longer? He’s actually had you come here every day to guard us. Catherine, if you’re free, come along too. Ava, come with us, let me introduce you."

"Alright, let’s go together." Catherine nodded, "It is a formal task handover, after all."

The girls had just arrived home and hadn’t had time to change clothes; they didn’t need to pack anything anyway. They all came out of the living room and gathered at the door. A little girl also chased after them, but was stopped by Catherine: "The rest of you, stay home and reflect on your actions. No running around. We’ll be back soon, and we’ll have dinner together tonight. Alright, Rene, has Master Christo been impatient? I’m really sorry, it’s been a while since we’ve spoken due to the long distance."

"It actually hasn’t been that long." Rene said somberly: "But Master Christo hasn’t been well these past few days. He’s worried that he won’t last long enough for you to find him, so he urged me to wait here for you every day."

"Hmm?" Pannis’s smile stiffened as his eyebrows slowly knitted together. He said in a deep voice, "Christo...his health isn’t doing well? Wasn’t he fine just a while ago? Even though he was a little weak, he still had the energy to argue with us at the Tower of Colossus. How come he’s suddenly worried he won’t have enough time to wait for our return? What has happened in these past couple of months?"

"Actually, nothing happened." Rene climbed into a large carriage with everyone, signaled to the coachman, and the carriage swiftly set off, moving rapidly along the road. Inside the carriage, Rene continued, "It’s just that the Master is old, and his health always worsens in the winter. But it seems to be more severe this time. The city lord returned two days earlier than you, and has already visited with Master Antuin of the Mage Guild. Even the president of the City of Freedom is supposedly on his way. They didn’t explain Master’s specific situation to me, but judging from my daily care for him, I worry he won’t be able to hold on much longer. These past few days, even getting out of bed has been difficult for the Master. He basically spends each day lying in bed."

"Is it... that serious now?" Pannis had an odd expression as he leaned against the carriage wall, silently watching the continuously receding scenery outside the window, and murmuring to himself, "Didn’t expect...it to come so soon, huh?"

"What’s wrong with you all?" Ava, expressionless, twirled her golden hair and asked in an even tone, "Why did the mood suddenly become so heavy? Weird. Who are you talking about? What happened to him?"

"I mentioned I would tell someone about your situation before, the Master Christo we just mentioned is that person." Catherine whispered into Ava’s ear, "He’s not in good health and may not be able to keep going."

"Not able to keep going? Does that mean he’s dying?" Ava blinked, searching for related knowledge in her memory, "If his health is bad, why not seek treatment? Although the current medical technology isn’t the same as in the Goblin Era, it’s still advanced. If he’s sick, shouldn’t he just get better?"

"It’s not that simple," Catherine whispered, "The Master isn’t exactly sick, he is just too old, and his bodily functions can no longer keep up. This is why he’s as weak as Rene described, this can’t be cured."

"So it’s aging, that indeed is an incurable disease," Ava nodded seriously, "Even if you were to replace all the organs in the body, you still cannot halt the death that comes with age. I don’t fully understand how that feels, but I have seen some researchers die from aging at the Center before. Even the life support chambers couldn’t prolong their lives. It seemed like a very frightening thing."

"Indeed, it’s very frightening, almost everyone can’t escape this outcome," Catherine glanced at Pannis and added, "Maybe there are exceptions, but most people will end like this."

"Is this also divine punishment?" Ava asked with a tilt of her head, her face expressionless, "Otherwise, why would such frightening things happen?"

"No, this is not divine punishment. This is the destiny of every mortal, an inevitable final fate," Catherine shook her head, "Whether it is long or short, mortal lives are ultimately finite. Sooner or later, everyone will face this day, no one can resist it unless they ascend the divine altar. Precisely because of this, many people hope to serve by the side of deities after death, continuing their will and life in a different way."

"I’m sorry, but I find it hard to understand," Ava said, "What about you? Will you also face this day? And, what about me? Will this body of mine also walk down this terminal path?"

"We will too—except if we die on one of our adventures, there will come a day when we will also age and weaken to the point where we can no longer care for ourselves but lie in bed awaiting the arrival of death," Catherine sighed and spoke in a voice only Ava could hear, "But you probably wouldn’t. You have the body of a Deity. You’ve lived for over ten thousand years. In the end, you’ll be just like Sigein, living forever... until eternity."

"So, in the end, I’ll be all alone?" Ava uttered blankly, "Can’t you all stay by my side like Sigein, even if we remain at odds forever?"

"I’m sorry, we can’t do that," Catherine consoled while stroking Ava’s head, "But don’t worry, there are still decades to go. In that time, you will get accustomed to this new world gradually, you will gradually make new friends, and adapt to this completely new life. When that time comes, you will no longer feel lonely, nor need us to be constantly at your side."

"Is... that so?" Ava mumbled blankly, "Decades seem like a short time."

"Haha, don’t think too much about it," Catherine laughed gently, "Because human lives are fleeting, we strive to make the world a more colorful place. In this colorful world, compared to your previous life, decades will be a long journey. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed."

"Perhaps," Ava nodded vaguely, expressionless, and stared blankly at the carriage’s ceiling. Perhaps because the conversation had gone too heavy, silence fell upon the carriage. Everyone was wrapped up in their thoughts. Only the steady clip-clop of horse hooves and the bustling noises from the passersby drifted in from the carriage windows. Gradually, the sounds of chatting and commotion from pedestrians decreased, leaving only the persistent rhythm of horse hooves driving the carriage swiftly forward.

The silence lasted a while until the carriage stopped in front of a small courtyard in the Magic District. The typically secluded courtyard now had over twenty carriages parked in front of it, blocking the road completely. With Rene leading the way, the six adventurers walked past the jammed carriages. They found the gate to Christo’s small courtyard tightly shut, with groups of elegantly dressed people and robe-clad mages gathered outside the yard, speaking in hushed voices. These people had all received some news and, for various reasons, wished to visit this hero of a hundred years ago. However, Christo had enough stature to refuse such tiresome visitors, so they had no choice but to wait outside, hoping for a chance to be granted an audience. Rene didn’t pay any attention to them and strode straight through the crowd. People watched in surprise as the six adventurers followed behind Rene, but wisely chose to remain silent.

Upon entering the small courtyard’s gate, they found that Christo was not sitting in his usual rocking chair in the yard. Instead, sounds of conversation floated from inside the house. If one listened carefully, they could discern Christo’s distinct sharp goblin laughter amongst the voices, a merry sound revealing the owner’s high spirits.

"Huh? It seems Master has recovered a bit," Rene, who had been taking care of Christo for over half a year and had considered him family since she had been orphaned at a young age, showed a heartfelt smile at the sound of Christo’s laughter. "Hearing Master’s lively laughter, he must be okay. Perhaps I overthought this time. I’m sorry for making you all worried, but since we’re here anyway, let’s go in and see him. It might brighten his mood."

However, aside from Ava, who remained impassive as always, the other five adventurers still wore somber expressions. Freya reluctantly smiled at her once co-adventurer and said, "Let’s go and check on him then. You come too."

"What did you do?" Catherine suddenly paused before they entered the room. As someone sensitive to energy, she realized that Pannis had just oscillated his Inherent Psychic Domain multiple times in a split second. This was done rhythmically, like a signal of some sort. Finding it odd, Catherine turned around and asked Pannis, "Does this rhythm mean something?"

"Nothing," Pannis shook his head, "It’s just a notification. Don’t mind it."

"Haha, I can tell from your footsteps that old friends are here." Christo’s sharp voice echoed from the room, "Come in, come in. You guys returned so quickly this time. I assume the mission was a success. If it wasn’t, you would have spent at least twice the time searching and wouldn’t be back so soon."

Also, your daughter, who happens to be your student," interjected Antuin, the president of the Mage Guild, with an elegance unique to Elves. "It seems like all of them are here. Christo, what mission did you assign them exactly?"

"Hahaha, that’s a goblin secret," Christo replied smugly, "I will never tell."

The six members of the adventure team entered as directed by the sound, only to spot the spirited old goblin sitting casually on the bed. (To be continued.
