Chapter 628: Chapter 94: Lina’s Book_1
The early winter wind quietly swept over each corner of Fox Street, causing the fallen leaves to shrivel in the cold. The wind also caused the soft grass in the courtyard of the Fox Street No. 6 Mansion to turn yellow. The once vibrant green lawn had once again adopted the distinct dull yellow characteristic of winter, adding a hint of bleakness to the appearance of the mansion from the outside.
If you circled around to the backyard, you would find that two swings and a sandbox for children to play had been added near the small practice field. Often, two children dressed in doll clothes would be seen swinging back and forth, expressing immense joy. However, the backyard was now empty, void of any people. The young women’s carriage drove all the way to the entrance of the mansion, where it stopped. Usually, the two small maids would promptly run out to greet everyone, but they were absent, causing Catherine to feel uneasy. Nevertheless, although the yard seemed empty, when the girls got off the carriage, they heard the sound of conversation. It wafted through a slightly opened window from the mansion’s first-floor living room, "Come, everyone repeat these words after me."
"Yes, Ms. Michelle.""Happy.""Happy.""Excited.""Excited.""Pleasure.""Pleasure.""Ambiguous.""Ambiguous.""Burning.""Burning.""Rolling.""Rolling.""Deep.""Deep.""OK, I’ll give everyone three minutes to remember how to spell these seven words and I will ask you to write them from memory later. The person who does not write correctly, each wrong word must be rewritten fifty times."
From the voices within, it seemed that the little girls had organized a small classroom for word recognition. The two sisters, who served as maids, grew up in the dark alleys of the City of Innocence and knew no common language from the start. The Little Deer was a beastman before it died, a creature from a small tribe that knew few words in its own language, let alone the common one. Only little banshee Annie was slightly better off. Having received formal education as a child, she knew some words. But after hiding in the ruins of the city for several decades, most of her knowledge had faded. The young women had always wanted to find a home tutor for the four children to at least allow them to read. However, due to the identities of Annie and Little Deer, coupled with the susceptibility of Pansy and Mimosa to strangers, they hadn’t found a suitable person. Unexpectedly, Michelle and Ansha, who came to visit, had voluntarily shouldered the task of education.
However, while this should’ve been a joyous occasion, the young women all wore odd expressions, especially Lina. Blue veins bulged in pulsating rhythm on her pale forehead, and suddenly she darted towards the mansion’s door shouting furiously, "Damn it! Michelle, Ansha, come out! What words are you two teaching them? What the hell do you usually read or think about? And where did you find such books? Tell me, I promise that I won’t kill him."
Lina’s furious roar startled the six children who were so engaged in their lessons that they hadn’t heard the carriage outside. Screams of panic erupted inside the room, followed by the chaotic noise of tables and chairs being overturned. Catherine shook her head with a bitter smile and held Ava’s hand, making their way towards the door. "Everyone gets pretty excited when they come home. You’ll understand once you get used to it. I’m really sorry to put you through this as soon as you arrived. Let’s go inside together, and I’ll introduce you to the kids."
"You all have children?" Ava still kept her poker face, but her eyes revealed surprise. She glanced at the other young women and then at Pannis with a look of utmost contempt, before continuing, "And it sounds like there are five or six?"
"Ahem." Pannis coughed awkwardly, staring at Ava with wide eyes, "You can’t just make assumptions. Don’t you realize how terrifying the implications could be? How could your mind jump to such conclusions so quickly? Saying such things could lead to a terrible outcome for me. Do you understand that?"
"Catherine." Ava ignored Pannis with another heavy blow, "Could you introduce everyone to me later, please? Since I want to live with you all, I take it I’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet everyone."
"Hey, you’re ignoring me again, aren’t you?" Pannis lamented, "I’m talking to you, could you please respond?"
The young women giggled, covering their mouths, as they accompanied Ava into the entrance, leaving the pitiful Pannis alone outside in the cold wind, his head drooping down. As soon as they neared the door of the living room, they could hear Lina’s angry roars from inside. They crept closer to the door and peered inside to find the six children standing in a row. Lina, with her hands on her hips, scolded, "You two stand properly. You must explain clearly what you two are up to."
"We were teaching them to read." Michelle’s voice sounded innocent, but from an angle that Lina couldn’t see, her eyes shifted to the side to communicate with the other five accomplices, "Sister, weren’t you worried before? You wanted them to learn to read and write, and we thought you were working too hard. We felt that we should help share some of the burden, so we discussed with Annie and decided to be their teachers. I’m sorry, we didn’t expect this to make you so angry."
"No, no, no, I’m not angry. You two are so sensible and considerate of your sister. Why would I be angry? I should be overjoyed." Hearing Michelle’s explanation, Lina was thrown into a state of panic and hastily reassured the twin sisters. However, after a moment, Lina suddenly froze and finally registered what was happening before angrily retorting, "Wait, I almost fell for your little trick, I wasn’t asking why you were teaching them to read. I was asking what kind of vulgar stuff you’re teaching them. Where did you find such a book? Tell me clearly or you’ll end up with bruised behinds."
"Do we really need to explain?" Michelle looked imploringly at Lina with pitiful eyes and asked softly, "Is it ok if we don’t?"
"No way, you must explain." Lina exploded with anger, "Is it your tutor or your personal guards? I need to have a good talk with them, how dare they let you read such books? You are only thirteen, you’re just children."
"Sister, please don’t be angry." Ansha beseeched, shaking Lina’s hand, looking up at her with teary eyes, saying softly, "We’ll definitely change, please don’t ask any more."
"No, you have to explain yourselves." Lina sternly said with a cold face, "Come on, who was it?"
"Actually..." Michelle hesitated for a moment, and said quietly, "We found it in your room before."
"So it was...huh?" Lina’s expression suddenly became quite weird, almost every human expression could be found on her face. She chuckled saying,"Hahaha, what nonsense are you talking about? How could such a book be in my room? Hahaha, lying isn’t a good habit, haha, you shouldn’t learn to be naughty kids, hahaha."
"Really, we didn’t lie." The twin sisters glanced at each other again, blinked mischievously, and when they looked up again, their pure innocence had returned. Anxiously they said, "we’re not lying, really we found it in your room. It was last year, the two books with pink covers beside your bed, oh, and this one with the rose-red cover."
"Hahaha, okay okay, you were teaching them to read out of goodwill, I won’t blame you this time." Lina chuckled again, her fair face flushed with embarrassment, she flippantly waved her silver locks behind her saying, "Don’t read randomly in the future, remember that? Wait till you girls grow up before you read those books. Actually, don’t read them even when you’re grown up, you’re supposed to be proper ladies."
"Yes, we won’t watch it anymore." The twin sisters lowered their heads, snuck out a naughty smile, winked at the four friends behind them, and then sincerely said, "If we knew sister would get so angry, we wouldn’t have watched from the start."
With a "clang", the door of the living room was pushed open again. Catherine walked in with a warm smile, followed by Ava with a poker face and three smirking fellows. Catherine said in a gentle tone, "Dear Miss Lina, and adorable Ms. Michelle and Miss Ansha, the four of us have not had a heart-to-heart chat in a very long time. I think it’s time now, there are certain things we need to have a serious discussion about."
"Wait, sister, let me explain," Lina blushed, waving her hands wildly, "This is a misunderstanding. Really, it was an accident. I have no idea how those three books ended up beside my bed. I mean, those three books were borrowed by accident from the library in Holy City while I was there, really, I was planning to return them and chastise them."
"Really? So it was an accidental one-year loan?" Catherine crossed her arms, giving Lina an ambiguous smile as she said more gently, "Moreover, how did I not know that you can continue to borrow books from the Holy City Library for a year? I thought if the loan period was not extended after a month, someone would have been knocking on the door for them."
"Well, that’s, there’s a reason for that." Lina’s eyes fluttered nervously. She glanced at Pannis, squatting on the side with silent laughter, and immediately drew her eyebrows together in an angry frown, "Pannis, you terrible guy, you wait for it."
"Hey, why is the blame suddenly on me?" Pannis said innocently, "I was just passing by to watch the fun. I don’t know anything about pink and rose-red, hahaha."
While the room was in chaos, the bell at the front door was suddenly pulled, and a voice came through the window gap, "Ladies, are you back? Miss Freya, are you there?"
"Hmm? Rene? Could it be the girl Nicole mentioned before?" Freya, who was laughing heartily, paused and rushed to open the door. "Rene, why are you here? Is there something you need?"
"Master Christo wants to see you," Rene replied, her face looking rather serious. "Oh, and Mr.Pannis, it’d be best if the other ladies from the adventure team could make it too if they’re free."
