Chapter 620: Chapter 86: Vivian’s multiple choice question_1
"Boom!" Vivian’s most adept fire-attribute magic descended from above, bursting out with its most potent force, engulfing everything in a sea of flames. The air was filled with the smell of burning embers, and the heat wave scorched everyone’s cheeks. The fiery tendrils danced gleefully in the sky, releasing sizzling and crackling sounds. However, all these were unable to grab anyone’s attention because everyone was stunned by Vivian’s actions.
Vivian did not opt to attack the life pod where Ava lay dormant. Even if she tried to assault the life pod, a simple magic spell wouldn’t be enough to destroy it. After all, that’s an object even the mightiest among the deities had to stretch their power beyond safety limits to destroy. Given Vivian’s level of mana and power, it would take at least a few minutes of full force attacks to potentially damage the life pod.
She also didn’t choose to attack Sigein in an attempt to distract her so that Pannis could steal the Automatic Treatment Device using his Inherent Psychic Domain. With her ascension to the Legendary tier and her ability closing in on Pannis’s, she grasped the concept of a Demigod’s power. It’s clear to her that it’s easier to destroy something than to protect it. Even if Pannis unleashed his complete power in an attempt to retrieve the treatment device, there’s less than a five percent chance of a successful and safe return. And even if he managed to keep the treatment device intact, they would pay a devastating price. It’s an inevitable outcome, but one that Vivian is most reluctant to see.
So, she made a choice that shocked everyone, one that even Sigein didn’t foresee, leaving her stunned as Vivian carried out her intentions. Actually, Vivian’s choice was simple: she chose to employ her strongest individual magic, Celestial Fire. The intense heat from the fire would descend and hit the world’s perhaps last surviving Whole Body Regenerative Automatic Treatment Device, melting all non-goblin metal components inside. This extraordinary goblin-made device was irreversibly transformed into a ball of scrap iron, ruling out any hope of salvaging it.
"Clap clap clap," Vivian dusted off her hands as if to remove the ashes, laughing softly, "I hate making choices, truly, deeply hate it. So see, now that one option doesn’t exist, there’s no need to make any decisions."
"You..." For the first time, the smile faded from Sigein’s face. The close proximity of the explosive flame didn’t harm her at all, not even singeing a strand of her hair, but her expression was even darker and harder to look at than if she’d been scorched, "So this is your choice? You should know more than anyone, you’ve just destroyed your one and only hope for recovery."
"Ha, of course I know. It’s exactly because I know that I did it." Vivian laughed calmly as if nothing had happened, and casually said, "I’m a coward. I’m afraid of getting sick, being alone, and dying. Even if I can stand and walk around now, I’m still fearful and timid in my heart. I’m terrified with each step I take, fearing I will fall and never be able to get up again. But my older sister reached out her hand to help me and she’s never let go, guiding me all the way to where we are now. As for me? I’m selfish, I comfortably hide behind her, letting her protect me, take care of all the trouble, making my path smoother and smoother. All the pain, she bears alone, all the pressure and burden, she carries on her thin shoulders. Even Pannis’s arrival has only partially relieved her of that pressure, and the fundamental problem remains unsolved. I can only watch my sister becoming more and more exhausted under the pressure, facing each test and temptation, unable to do anything, unable to help her."
"Now, my sister is forced to make another decision, and it’s about me. It’s not fair." Vivian turned back to Catherine, smiled sweetly, and spoke in a clear, sweet voice: "I’m well-aware of the pain in your heart. On one side, it’s me; on the other side, it’s the innocent Ava. On one hand, it’s your feelings, and on the other, it’s your convictions. Whichever side you choose, it amounts to the collapse of your faith. No matter which you choose, you’ll never be the same Catherine again, you’ll never again be the knight whose faith never wavers. Sister, how were you planning to handle this? Do you dare to speak up in front of everyone? Ha, you won’t. But don’t forget about my power. It’s easy for me to guess your plan. First, you break Ava’s life pod, hand her physical body over to Sigein in exchange for my treatment, and then? Deceive us into leaving, and then launch an attack on her by yourself? You know better than anyone else that you can’t win against her and you can’t save Ava either. The end result would be your life traded for a funeral for Ava? Yes, it’s mentioned in the knight’s code, the life of an innocent can only be paid for with one’s own blood and life."
Catherine didn’t say a word, her head hanging low. Her raven hair covered her face, hiding her expressions from everybody. However, her shield, which remained steady even under the attack of a Demigod, was now trembling uncontrollably.
"Yeah, whether I guessed right or not, the outcome is predictable. You choose to save her, and you’ll be immersed in regret and sorrow for the next several hundred days, and then join me in the grave, or you choose to save me, and you wouldn’t have any future to begin with. But my dear sister, a knight’s self-sacrifice isn’t meant to be used in a situation like this."
"You really think I can be that selfish? You carried me, supported me, held me; we’ve already come this far. You’ve taken on too many choices and too much suffering for me. This time, I want to make my own decision, it’s time for me to bear the pain and pressure for you. My beloved sister, don’t forget, we five are a whole, each of us may have our flaws, but that does not prevent us all from shouldering the burden you’ve been carrying on your shoulders."
"So, this is my choice." Vivian finally turned to Sigein again, and said with a brilliant smile, "You asked us to choose between you and her, but I’m sorry, we’re not in the habit of doing so. Hence, now, we chose not to play by your rules. So, what cards do you have to keep this game in play? Honorable Sigein, sorry to say, but we’ve thwarted you."
Sigein was still sitting on the ground, playing with her hair, her face blank. After a long silence, she gave a light sigh, shaking her head and laughing bitterly, "Alright, I admit it, you caught me by surprise. I knew that Ava would certainly recruit people with strong emotions because that’s her only hope of winning. So, when I learned through the Crystalline Network that you were looking for this treatment device, I was already prepared. The deeper the emotions, the harder it is to resist my terms."
"Indeed, your terms are truly irresistible." Catherine finally raised her head, her eyes slightly reddening. She held Vivian from behind, hugging her tightly for a long while before continuing, "Earlier, I thought a lot. I’ve considered both choices. Vivian’s guess was spot on. No matter which side I chose, I planned to use my life to repay the other side. I never thought that Vivian would suddenly take such an action."
"Of course, it’s because I’m a genius." Vivian relaxed into Catherine’s arms, proudly declaring: "The workings of a genius’s mind are impossible for anyone to predict."
"Having lived for hundreds of thousands of years, I find my understanding of human nature is once again revised by you. I never suspected the existence of people like you in our world, I have no words to describe how I lost this game," Sigein laughed at himself.
"Actually, there are quite a few people like us in this epoch. I firmly believe that even in the First Epoch, there were still many such individuals," said Vivian. "It’s just that your status is so high; you rarely come into contact with such people. Even if you did meet them, you couldn’t have grasped their mindset until you found yourself in the situation we’re in now."
"Perhaps. Well, since you’ve paid a hefty price and helped Ava win this wager, I won’t go back on my word. You guys can leave with her body. But as for you..." Sigein cast a suggestive look at Pannis, grinning, "You’re definitely staying, aren’t you?"
"Of course," Pannis nodded, squinting his eyes and showing an odd smile. He declared: "I’ve got plenty of things to discuss with you."
"Indeed. The murderous intent in your heart is nearly materializing. I know what you’re after," Sigein chuckled coldly. "But, do you truly believe that a mere Undying Mark given by a deity can solve everything? Our Triclops race might have ways to break the Undying Mark."
"Without trying, who can tell?" Pannis’s smile grew warmer as a brilliant aura of aggression emanated from his being. What was once silver-ranked aggression was transforming into the gold rank at this very moment. Pannis checked his body and chuckled: "Look, even luck is on my side. A seal has been broken and my power seems to have grown stronger."
"I’ve said this before, even at your strongest, you’ll only stand a chance against me," said Sigein, his eyelashes lowered. "Pride is the original sin, it leads to failure, much like the one I just suffered."
"Thanks for the reminder," Pannis smiled, then said, "Catherine, you and the others take Ava’s body and leave. If I don’t return after a while, head back to the Yarran World on your own. Don’t worry, I won’t die."
Catherine hesitated for a moment, then gritted her teeth and picked up Ava’s life-pod with Freya, heading out without looking back.
"Your teammates are pretty good," commented Sigein. "Very decisive."
"Of course." Pannis smiled gently. Bringing his hands back to his front, he gazed quietly at them, saying, "That’s why I am willing to fight alongside them."
"Hahaha." Sigein rose, seemingly floating off the ground. He carefully tucked the ivory comb back into his pocket and announced: "Let’s get started." (To be continued.
