Chapter 616: Chapter 82: Two Choices_1
"The story is simple." Sigein retied her long golden hair, leisurely combing it intermittently with an ivory comb. "I’m a target the deities are determined to kill. If I expose myself, they will hunt me down. This hatred was left from the Godslaying War and hasn’t faded even after more than a hundred thousand years. However, as long as I hide most of my power, they wouldn’t be able to find me, just like in the past hundred thousand years. She, on the other hand, is the core of this research center and is also the product of an experiment. She is a forbidden existence as well, so if her identity is exposed, those deities might not spare her either."
"However, we have been restraining each other here. Neither of us can do anything to the other." Sigein spoke calmly about the topic that should have been infuriating, "She used this Emergency Shelter to trap me here. I’m not unable to leave, but if I want to get out, I have to break the barriers of the shelter. To break the barriers, I have to use power far beyond the safe limit and risk being found by the deities. And I have control over her physical body. Once her physical body is destroyed, her soul will lose its vessel, becoming just like an ordinary control center."
"My physical body is on your right." Ava finally spoke again, mechanically said: "Can you see that life-support pod? Oh, those upright cylindrical posts, my physical body is in the third one."
To their right indeed was a row of cylindrical posts lying flat on the ground, made of Crystal, entirely transparent, and offering a clear view of the inside. In the third life-support pod lay a girl. The girl appeared to be about ten years old, with long golden hair, delicate features, tender skin, and slender limbs. From a distance, she looked like a beautiful doll. She bore a striking resemblance to Sigein, and she too had a third eye, currently closed, on her forehead. The pod was full of liquid, with the naked girl floating inside, showing no signs of reaction, as if she were asleep.
Despite being seen in the raw, Ava showed none of the embarrassment that a human would. Her voice unchanged, she said: "If I vanish, the Shelter’s door can be reopened by her, and she would be free to do anything. But she can’t easily destroy my physical body, because the device that holds it has strong defenses. To destroy it, she has to use power beyond the safe limit. I, on the other hand, can’t take my physical body away. Only by transporting the device that holds my body outside the Emergency Shelter can I merge back into my physical body."
"If no variables were introduced, we would just keep on restraining each other like this. Who knows for how long this can go on? It might go on until the next Epoch." Sigein’s gentle smile said it all, "We both have plenty of patience. I’ve already lived for seven hundred thousand years. Ten thousand years are but an instant to me, not a lot to fret about. As for her, impatience was never coded into her logic. Even now, when she has gained her own Divine Wisdom. But when you all walked in, it was different. While none of us would generally get tired of this struggle, there’s nothing wrong with ending it ahead of time if an opportunity arises. So we made a bet. You all will determine the outcome of our standoff."
"You can determine our futures." Ava said, "As long as you make a decision."
"There are two options." Sigein stood two of her fair fingers: "First, you break the defense of the life-support pod and destroy her physical body inside. If you do this, not only will you get the treatment device behind me, but also some knowledge of the deities, knowledge about magic and power. The second option, hehe, I don’t think you’d be so foolish to pick it, is to refuse. You could help her transport the life-support pod out of the Emergency Shelter. But think about the consequences. First, I would definitely destroy this treatment device, then I would stop you guys, so if you want to do it, you’ll have to defeat me first. I would be forced to use power beyond the safe limit, and then who knows what could happen. Hehehe. Sir, given your power level, you should be well aware of the intensity of a Godslaying War participant’s full strength, right? Hehehehe. So, make a decision. Will you choose me, or Ava?"
"I’m sorry to have to make you choose." Ava also said, "But this is the only way to break the deadlock."
"And what if we refuse to choose?" Catherine asked, her voice low and disgruntled, "What will you do then?"
Ding-dong. Sigein didn’t say a word, instead, she just casually tapped on the Whole Body Regenerative Auto-treatment Device behind her, flashing a charming smile at them. Her third eye blinked playfully on her forehead.
"Hmm, I see." Catherine sighed, "But in order to make a decision, we have to understand more about the situation. If you’re going to make us blindly choose, we’d rather turn around and leave. Don’t forget, we already know the cause of Vivian’s disease. At the very least, we stand a chance of maintaining her current condition by ourselves."
"Of course, you can ask any question you want to know." Sigein sat cross-legged on the ground, combing her long golden hair. "It will be up to us to decide whether to answer them or not. But you can rest assured, we know that whether we provide answers could influence your decision, so we won’t easily refuse."
"Why do you restrain each other?" Catherine’s first question went straight to the point, "Are you restraining each other merely because you have nothing else to do, and need something to fill your time? I need to know why you are doing this."
"The reason? Hehe." Sigein feigned surprise as he laughed, "Isn’t being an enemy of the Deity reason enough?"
"Of course it isn’t. Goblins don’t believe in God. Most of them are atheists, and just a handful of the goblins who do have faith are merely Pan-believers." Catherine shook her head, "Besides, not all of a God’s actions are necessarily right. Just because one is an enemy of a Deity doesn’t mean you should restrain each other for thousands of years. I cannot accept that as a reason."
On the Yarran Continent, gods reign supreme, holding the authority of all laws, but apart from a very few gods, none are seen as omniscient and omnipotent. It is universally accepted that gods can be unaware of things and can make mistakes. Therefore, even Lina, the most devout follower, had no objections to Catherine’s argument.
"Alright, that reason indeed lacks persuasion." Sigein lifted his hand to his chin in frustration, caressing his lush red lips with slender finger and pondering. The soft light in the room reflected faintly off his moist lips. After a while, he sighed and spoke, "To explain the reason, we have to look into many aspects. It’s actually quite a long story."
"In simple terms, the downfall of the goblins was due to her manipulation." Ava interjected, speaking calmly, "The last few core managers rewrote my programming before they died and gave me the authority to take revenge on her. But this is just one reason. Another is that she attempts to control me absolutely, forcing me to do some things for her. The ultimate goal of these tasks might lead to disastrous results for the entire world. This contradicts my core programming, and I cannot accept it. Not only can I not accept it, once she leaves the emergency refuge, she could easily override my control and disable my life capsule’s defense. I would then have no power whatsoever to resist."
"What is the ultimate aim of these tasks?" Catherine pressed, "What kind of severe consequences are we talking about?"
"As you have mentioned before, I have inherited the Divine Duty," Sigein responded casually, "Just think, what would that Divine Duty be?"
"You want revenge?" Catherine’s heart tightened and a dryness caught in her throat, "Revenge against the Deity?"
"This is too complicated to say, it would be better to start from the beginning and explain in detail." Sigein shook his head, clearly a bit frustrated, "To explain everything clearly, we need to go back to the Godslaying War that occurred over a hundred thousand years ago."
"During the Mythical Age, also known as the First Epoch in your terms, Deities lived among humans, enjoying their faith and in turn, reflecting power back to the humans. The relationship was generally harmonious." Sigein spoke seriously, "Later, some of the mightiest beings of the Triclops race clashed with the Deities, leading to several battles. There were victories and defeats, and the victors inherited the Divine Duties. The losers were naturally eliminated from the world. The Deities didn’t care much about who won or lost. After all, the numbers were small and wouldn’t cause any significant impact. Moreover, the fallen deities often behaved excessively, so the other peaceful and righteous deities somewhat agreed with the action and actively befriended the new deities. If things had continued in this way, the outcome wouldn’t have been so disastrous."
"But, as often happens, things don’t usually go as expected. Our once beautiful world was destroyed by our own hands," Sigein sighed deeply and spoke as if reminiscing, "Somewhat secretly, some malevolent deities seduced us and encouraged us to wage increasingly frequent battles against the Deities. In that period, which probably lasted a few hundred years, every year would see both gods and supremely powerful beings perish, plunging the world into darkness."
"And so, war broke out between gods and humans..."(To be continued. If you like this work, please come to qidian.com and vote for it. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users please go to m.qidian.com to read.)
