Chapter 615: Chapter 81: Emergency Shelter_1
With a hissing sound of gas being released, the tightly sealed round metal door sprayed out a large amount of white mist from around it. The door slowly swung outwards. Just as Ava had described, inside was practically a large castle, or more exaggeratedly, a small town. The shelter felt as if it had hollowed out the entire stratum, an area vastly larger than the unassuming core building above. There were many underground structures built within. On one side of the shelter, there appeared to be a plantation, completely covered by transparent crystals. The humidity within was very high, and you could see beads of condensation formed on the crystal walls. Some oddly shaped metal puppets were working in the plantation. The ground wasn’t covered in soil, but rather, a thick layer of gel-like substance, from which various unrecognizable crops grew. It seemed like it was harvest time; the puppets were all busily reaping the crops. On the other side of the shelter, there were many entertainment buildings, with a variety of amenities that could accommodate hundreds of people simultaneously, intended to relieve the monotony of the sheltered life. Yet these facilities seemed to have never been used before. Despite being automatically cleaned and maintained by the puppets, they still appeared somewhat aged.
Walking straight down the path facing the door, bypassing the plantation and entertainment area, one would see a large stadium. As professionals, the five members of the adventure team were not familiar with such a thing, but many ordinary people in the outside world enjoyed coming to stadiums for exercise, fitness, and competitive games in order to improve their physical strength. It seemed the physically fragile goblins did the same thing, honing their bodies through exercise. Opposite the stadium was a large empty plot. According to Ava, this was a testing field for the puppets. Since the space inside the shelter was relatively limited, and most areas weren’t suitable for operating large puppets, this plot was specifically set aside for testing them, an area that wouldn’t affect any other buildings.
Moving forward, you would come to the residential area, a row of three-story buildings, about twenty in total. Each long building could accommodate around fifty households. Based on Ava’s earlier mention of accommodating a thousand people, the living conditions were quite spacious and comfortable, not at all like a shelter. Opposite the residential area was a huge library. Upon seeing it, Lina’s eyes lit up. Several times she was almost unable to resist rushing in to take a look, but luckily, she remembered that Vivian’s matter took precedence. Otherwise, she would have likely already lost herself inside the library. Fortunately, at Pannis’s urgent request, Ava mentioned that all the books in the library were written in ancient goblin script, which she wouldn’t be able to understand at all, finally dissipating her desire to rush in.
At the end of the main passage opposite the entrance, was a round metal door identical to the entrance. Ava explained that this was where the control center of the refuge was located, as well as the final defense mechanism of the shelter. Passing through the final defense door, the group seemed to once again return indoors from the wilderness. Room after room enclosed sealed in the left and right sides of the corridor. Looking through the transparent crystal walls of the rooms, you could see that each one resembled a small laboratory. Most of the strange machinery inside lay dormant, with only a few still running. At the end of the corridor appeared to be a large, circular hall, but the door was closed. Before any of them even entered, Ava’s amplified voice emanated from the small puppet on Pannis’s shoulder: "Sigein, I’m here. As you can see, unanticipated variables have emerged. It’s time for us to end this mutual stalemate."
"Hehe, what a lovely piece of artificial intelligence." A soft yet teasing female voice spoke in the common language with a strange accent: "Sometimes, I even surprise myself when I see you. Such a perfect artificial soul, who would have thought that it would be a product of my collaboration with the goblins. Even imagining it, feels like quite the astounding achievement."
"Regrettably, I was not created by you," Ava’s voice dropped low, carrying a faint trace of anger. "My wisdom was created by the goblins and has nothing to do with you."
"But what about your body? Who created that?" The female voice Ava had named as Sigein retorted. "Without that body to host your wisdom, do you think you could still maintain your current consciousness in the long term? Haha, such a disobedient child. I won’t argue with you. Let the new generation of intelligent lifeforms outside come in. Come and listen to a story, then make your decision. Draw the concluding mark to our mutual stalemate. To prevent you from being bewitched one-sidedly, Ava and I have an agreement that she is not allowed to give you any answers beforehand. These answers are often tinted with emotional coloring. By now, you must be full of questions. Come in, then. Ava and I will provide the answers to all your questions."
The five of them glanced at each other. Catherine gritted her teeth and pushed the door open to walk into the room. The interior of the room was indeed a circular hall. A large number of machines were running along the walls of the hall. You could clearly sense various energy flows crisscrossing and interweaving within the hall; despite their apparent randomness, they were actually very orderly and would not interfere with each other. On the opposite side of the hall, a woman in a strange white robe was sitting with her legs curled up on the side. The woman had an attractive figure, sufficiently enticing to the eye. Not just her body, her face was also very alluring. Among the women Pannis had met, only the Elf Queen and the princess of the City of Knowledge, Freya could compare to her. Of course, this referred only to the Freya from several years ago or in the future after she loses weight, as she certainly couldn’t compete with her current form.
Sigein had a head of golden hair, dazzlingly bright like sunlight, nearly two meters long. When she stood up, her golden hair fell almost to her ankles. Now, she was sitting on the floor on the opposite side of the hall, her golden hair piled onto her chest. In her slender white hands, she held a comb made of ivory, combing her smooth hair. As the members of the group entered, Sigein looked up, revealing a beautiful and radiant smile. Showing teeth whiter than the ivory comb’s, her smile was more dazzling than the sunlight. It was only now that everyone could see a third eye on her forehead, parallel to the other two eyes. The third eye was slightly larger than the normal ones, equally shimmering and watery.
"Welcome, everyone, to my home." Sigein greeted them with a radiant smile, her voice soft, "I have been living here for ten thousand years, I suppose it can be called my home, don’t you think, little Ava?"
Ava did not speak, she remained silent. Inside this emergency refuge, she could not control any of the equipment. As a result, when she was silent, no one knew whether she was still there or not. However, it could be that she was just unwilling to argue over such trivial matters.
"Well, let me introduce myself." Sigein stood up, her long hair draped over her arm, and said softly, "My name is Sigein. As you can see, I am a Triclops - oh, in your language, a member of the Deities. Deities, Deities, hehe, that name is quite interesting, a very vivid description of my people indeed."
"Sigein? Is it really appropriate to blatantly use the name of a Deity without any alterations?" Catherine asked with a frown, "Even if the goddess of pain and revenge has been largely ignored due to her unresponsiveness to the prayers of her worshippers and her church in this mortal world has disappeared, there are still a few believers wandering the earth. Aren’t you afraid that they will come after you for disrespecting... Wait, you, you’re not..."
"Hehe, so Erika, that bitch, did finally die in my setup?" Sigein laughed charmingly, like a lady, but her Third Eye radiated a cold murderous intent, "That brings me one step closer to my goal. However, since I once had worshippers, why didn’t I receive their devotion? I didn’t even receive Erika’s Divinity back into my body. Oh, I see, it must be that I hid too well, so well that not only the Deities couldn’t find me, but even faith couldn’t find its recipient. Hehe, it indeed unfolded beyond my expectations."
The girls’ faces turned ugly again. No one had expected the trouble to magnify to such an extent. Even Pannis let out a deep sigh. The instinctual fear arose again within him at the prospect of facing a Deity. However, after the mental transformation he underwent in the Beastmen Prairie, he could finally suppress his fear of incidents from the past. Besides, the woman in front of him was not an intact Deity, she did not inspire the kind of desperation a real Deity did. Therefore, Pannis slowly squinted his eyes, sneered secretly, and vanished from his spot, as if he had never been there.
However, the next instant, a loud blast echoed in the air, shaking everything as if several crystal bombs exploded simultaneously. With the blast, Pannis materialized unexpectedly in front of Sigein, staggering backward several steps, and Sigein’s hair, which she had been holding onto, was released, falling back onto her shoulders. She massaged her pale hand as if it were bothered by something, her Third Eye fixed on Pannis’s face, she chuckled softly, "You are entangled with an unknown divine power, but it’s okay, the divine is not my enemy. I believe your name is Pannis, it’s clear to see you are strong. If you were to break your own seal and return to your peak strength, though the chances are slim, you might have a chance to defeat me. However, did you underestimate me? Regardless of whether you break your seal, do you really believe you can silently sneak behind me and snatch this little object away? Do you think under your attack, I would have no strength left to destroy it?"
The tiny ’object’ that Sigein referred to was a barrel-shaped machine more than a person’s height, placed horizontally. One end of the machine featured a dome-like lid made of Transparent Crystal, which appeared to be large enough for a person to lie inside when opened. Pannis also rubbed his fingers, shaking his head with a bitter smile, "The reason I tried an unconventional method was that I realized the conventional ones wouldn’t do the trick."
"Obviously, unconventional methods won’t work either," Sigein replied, her smile unchanging, "So, why don’t you all sit down and listen to our story?" (To be continued.
