Chapter 613: Chapter 79: Core Building_1

"Hm?" Pannis cocked his head again, directing his gaze towards the small gadget on his shoulder. "Where have you seen us before?"

"It’s not time to tell you yet," Ava replied. "Perhaps I’ll explain in detail later."

"Perhaps?" Pannis reiterated. "Just perhaps? But I probably guessed where you saw us. You haven’t seen Freya, have you?"

"We are currently passing through the gate of the Fourteenth District." Ava spoke in a mechanical voice. "The Fourteenth District is the Microorganism Research Area. In the year 6854, scholars found an extremely small energy creature in the Yarran World. This creature is often the same size as, or slightly larger than, some basic elemental bodies. They cannot be observed with naked eyes but can be distinguished by certain magnifying instruments. Since they are energy-based and minute, they hardly affect our systems. But there are exceptions. If such an energy creature is too large or its numbers are concentrated, it will affect physical systems. For example, Searle Syndrome is a typical case. If the energy creature becomes bigger, it can directly affect the Living World and even cause large-scale disasters."

"Alright, alright, I’ll stop asking." Pannis said helplessly, "I really don’t know how you developed this habit."

Catherine patted Pannis’s back in comfort before asking Ava the question that had been on her mind, "Ava, when we first entered, there was an identity check. The system obviously identified us as unknown organisms, yet it inexplicably let us through. I want to know, what would happen if we didn’t pass the check?"

"You would be expelled." Ava replied. "Those who fail the verification will be sent back to where they originally entered from. If the organism to be expelled has violent tendencies, they will be forcibly expelled. As for where they end up, that is uncertain, they may be expelled into the void. If the organism possesses excellent abilities and cannot be expelled, it will be treated as an invader and be targeted with full-scale attacks from the defense measures."

"So did you control the verification and inexplicably let us pass?" Catherine asked. "The attitude of the verification suddenly changed, it must have been your interference, wasn’t it?"

"Yes, I interfered because I found out you were the ones coming in." Ava admitted, "I like you."

"Are you restricted in certain ways, so you cannot tell us certain things right now?" Catherine asked softly. "Something related to access permissions, perhaps?"

"Yes, but I would rather you stop guessing." Ava lost her calmness once more and spoke irritably. "When the time is right, I will definitely tell you."

"Alright, we won’t continue to ask." After exchanging a glance with Pannis, Catherine surprisingly agreed, seemingly unbothered by the risks of Ava withholding information. She nodded, saying, "We will leave it to you. I know there must be a problem here, and it is likely to cause trouble, but based on your previous behavior, I believe you are still on our side. I hope you won’t disappoint us."

"I’ll try my best." Ava’s voice was low in response. "I’ll try not to disappoint you."

The inside of the crystal-energy vehicle fell into an eerie silence again. Regardless of Ava, or the five members of the adventure team, they all silently thought about their concerns. The crystal-energy vehicle continued to move smoothly over the slick road without a sound. The goblins’ crystal-energy vehicle was far superior to the ones people modeled based on goblin technology. Even though the vehicle was much heavier, it still moved smoothly and swiftly. Unknown though, was whether it consumed just as much energy. Moreover, inside the vehicle, none of the wind noise from high-speed driving could be heard. It was eerily quiet inside.

After they had been driving for a while, Lina suddenly remembered something and quietly asked Ava, "Actually, you do know what happened to the goblins, right? You mentioned the Great Disaster, this refers to the calamity that caused the extinction of the goblins, correct?"

"Yes, I do." Ava answered, "And I witnessed the entire process of the Great Disaster."

"But I had previously visited the ruins of a goblin city." What Lina thought of was the Clockwork City discovered deep under the sewers of the City of Innocence. "All over the city, there were bodies of goblins that had died suddenly. Clearly, the Great Disaster you mentioned happened abruptly. However, here, I have not seen any remains. Given that there were so many researchers here, there should be at least tens of thousands of bodies, but within the entire city, including the plaza and the residential area, there was not a single body."

"The bodies have been dealt with according to pre-set instructions." Ava answered. "All bodies were cremated in a collective manner, the ashes were then transported to various parts of the Felryas Mountain, which was designated in the contingency plan to be enacted in the case of mass fatalities in the research center. Shortly after the Great Disaster happened, I had already completed it, controlling the puppets operating the center."

"So you’re saying, even if we didn’t show up, you could still control the puppet to perform some actions?" Lina asked doubtfully, "Then why didn’t you go to those unresponsive areas to check out what happened by yourself?"

"I can’t." Ava explained, "I control the puppet by utilizing the Crystalline Network. If a node of the Crystalline Network loses response, all areas under this node would fall out of my control, just like what we saw in Laboratory No.9. I could observe the situation inside through other external devices if I maintain this state, and the signal could be sent back to me, but there’s no way to operate any devices within the coverage area of the node, including the external devices I was originally controlling. If you go to District Eleven, you’ll see, the ground is full of the puppets that I tried to send in there but lost response."

"Even the emergency refuge, too?" Pannis asked further.

"It’s different there. Even if the Crystalline Network remains intact, I won’t be able to control it, or even take the initiative to enter. However, if you take this puppet I’m controlling now, there would be no issue." Ava answered, "Overall, I still have control over most areas of the research center, with only a few having lost control."

"Whoosh", the conversation was interrupted as the Crystal Energy vehicle had already reached deep into the research center, flawlessly coming to a halt in front of an inconspicuous building compared to its surroundings. Ava indicated, "Please exit the vehicle, this here is the center’s core building. All crucial control system equipment is stored here, including the emergency refuge, which is underground. According to the design of the defensive strength, even if deities aim their energy attacks here, it would take a combined force of several deities about 30 minutes to break the defense system. Hence, this is practically the safest place in the Yarran Continent. No, it’s not parts of the Yarran Continent anymore, but it’s still the safest place in the world."

"May I try it?" Pannis asked with a peculiar expression. "Test the defense strength here."

"You can now, I’ve temporarily disabled the counterattack system here." Ava replied, "But how do you plan to test it?"

"Just like this." Pannis suddenly unsheathed his weapon, and a Vacuum Slash, a meter wide, shot from the arc that the blade drew. The moment the Vacuum Slash touched the metal building, most of its energy was promptly absorbed, reducing its power to less than a tenth of its original. It left no trace on the wall. Pannis was taken aback as he thrust forward with his sword, the blade’s Aggression landed squarely onto the wall. Unexpectedly, the penetrative attack’s energy was also significantly absorbed. Pannis ceased his attack, put away his one-handed sword, and said with interest, "Interesting, Vivian, this method of absorbing energy to strengthen oneself, you have a similar combat method, don’t you?"

"Yes, the thought process is quite similar." Vivian nodded, "I didn’t expect the goblins to have already put it into practice."

"But this absorption still has a limit, right?" Pannis asked Ava, "Once it starts to accumulate beyond the limit, the defensive system will collapse, right? And this defense cannot block the inherent psychic domain of a demigod."

"That’s correct. Your so-called Inherent Psychic Domain appeared in the Third Epoch and was not taken into consideration. I also can’t comprehend the meaning of the Inherent Psychic Domain." Ava admitted straightforwardly, "But excluding the Inherent Psychic Domain, even if a few of the most powerful Triclops come here, it would also require some time to break through."

"Indeed, it is a very effective defensive measure." Pannis nodded, "It’s not an exaggeration to say it’s the safest place in Yarran World. However, why would the goblins construct such a sturdy defense? They don’t have any particularly formidable enemies, right? Were they imagining the Triclops as their enemies? But there should also be Triclops involved here, right? Okay, you don’t need to answer, I know you’re about to introduce the surrounding equipment again, you’d better conserve some energy."

"Well, I can’t answer that, either." Ava somehow sounded a bit more cheerful in her usually flat, robotic voice. It’s as if she was amused by Pannis but chose not to ignore him and instead responded, "You’ll know eventually, just not now."

"Honestly, I smell trouble, and it’s getting closer." Pannis sighed and said, "If possible, I really want to know how big this trouble is, and how dangerous it might be. If it’s too dangerous..."

"Don’t even think about it." Catherine glared at Pannis, "You want to leave us behind to face danger alone? Do you see us as dragging you down? Don’t forget what happened in the deep sea. Without our help, you could not necessarily have accomplished the mission alone. Besides, you think we would just run away from trouble? What do you take us for?"

"I’m sorry, I was wrong." Pannis said apologetically, "Then let’s face it together. Ava, can you answer? How dangerous is the trouble exactly?"

"Don’t worry, there will be no life-threatening danger." Ava’s voice sounded a bit bitter, "Logically speaking, the five of you should not be in any life-threatening danger." (To be continued.
