Chapter 612: Chapter 78 I’ve Seen You_1

The doors at the end of the corridor were pushed open, revealing the world behind them. Behind those doors existed nothing, no corridors, no walls, no light, no shadows. This wasn’t the normal darkness people were acquainted with, or the void that one might imagine suddenly appearing. Instead, it was a void in the truest sense, empty of anything, a nothingness as if it wished to assimilate everything in itself. It was the endless void beyond the Yarran World.

With a "bang", Catherine, who had opened the doors at the end of the hallway, immediately closed them again. Looking somewhat uneasy, she turned around and asked, "What was that in there? Why do I feel a wave of fear, even though I have no idea what it was?"

"That must be the Void World." Vivian seemed also afraid, replying with a pallid face, "This is my first time seeing such a pure voidness. It’s very similar to the descriptions of the Void World, and this sense of fear is just the same as the records. Huff, huff... why does it make us so afraid even though we’ve never seen it before?"

"Just like the innate fear humans have towards darkness, it’s a fear that’s carved into the very soul." Pannis seemed relatively calm, but his usual lazy eyes had changed. They were now narrowed and half-open. The sight of this void reminded him of memories from over a century ago, "I didn’t expect that after this place was torn apart by a spatial anomaly, it would directly connect to the Void World."

"It’s not that it’s connected to the Void World, but the research center was originally located in the Void World." Cyrie, or rather, Ava’s voice came from Pannis’ shoulder. According to Ava’s previous claim, due to the damage to the Crystalline Network, she could not enter the areas without response for verification, so she could not personally confirm what had happened or follow the five members of the adventure team into the area. However, she had found a workaround: she made Pannis carry a wireless device into which she could enter, so that she could directly observe the scenes inside the area, "Do you remember what I told you earlier? The Research center was built in a newly-born demiplane in the void. Part of the demiplane was erased by the spatial anomaly, revealing the void."

"Why do we instinctively fear the void?" Lina opened the door a crack once more, peering inside. Three seconds later, the silver-haired priest closed the door heavily, panting, a thin sheen of cold sweat covering her forehead, "And what’s even stranger about this feeling is that despite the fear, I can’t help but want to take another look. It’s like, like, right, it’s like reading a horror novel, the scarier it is, the more you want to read."

"Who knows? Maybe it’s because the Void is too terrifying that it becomes an instinctual fear." Pannis shrugged and patted a small metal device on his shoulder, "Ava, we can confirm now that everything inside is completely destroyed. But I must say, goblin technology is really impressive. Visually, the whole building should have been swallowed up by the spatial anomaly, but the shell of this building didn’t collapse at all. I’m really curious to find out how you managed to achieve that."

"It was them, not us." Ava corrected before saying, "It looks like it can’t be repaired at all now. It’s a pity."

"Huh?" Pannis raised an eyebrow and said in surprise, "You don’t think of yourself as one of the goblins?"

"Of course not." Ava calmly retaliated, "Is there a problem with that? I am merely a control center that goblins produced using their own technology. Even if I have gained my own Divine Wisdom and body, I am merely a control center. How could I consider myself as one of the creators? It’s like if you made a chair, would the chair see itself as human?"

"You did know all along about the situation outside, didn’t you?" Pannis said, "We never described ourselves as humans, and neither would the goblins or the deities use that term to refer to themselves."

"Look, now that we’ve confirmed that this area cannot be brought back online, our only option is to head to the emergency shelter." Ava once again acted as if she hadn’t heard anything and ignored Pannis, speaking only to the girls, "There’s a long way to go from here to reach the emergency shelter. If you’re willing, let’s get started."

Seeing Pannis being ignored once again, the girls didn’t have any intention to support him. However, just before leaving the building of Laboratory No.9, Vivian suddenly asked in a soft voice, "Ava, even though you were made by the goblins, do you have a soul?"

"Soul?" Ava’s usually calm voice had an unusual hint of confusion, "I don’t know. Nobody has told me, and I don’t know whether I possess a soul or not. National one has explained to me what a soul is. I’ve also searched many records in the database, but none of them could accurately define what a soul is. I guess, maybe I don’t have a soul. After all, I’m not a living being in the true sense."

"Even in this day and age, ten thousand years later, nobody can clearly define what a soul is." Lina comforted, "Actually, I believe every creature with Divine Wisdom has a soul, even the beasts. You shouldn’t doubt that you have a soul just because you were created by the goblins. We, the two generations of intelligent beings were created by deities, but we never doubted whether we have a soul. As for you, the only difference is that the creator changed from a deity to a goblin, but the essence didn’t change. Wait, could the truth behind the goblins’ Divine Punishment be that they successfully created you, or rather, they successfully created a new soul, infringing upon the right of the gods, which provoked the Divine Punishment?"

"No." Ava denied, "The cause of the great catastrophe is not that simple."

"Do you know the reason for the goblins’ extinction?" Not just Vivian, but everyone was startled, staring at the little metallic device on Mr. Pannis’s shoulder, including Pannis himself. Catherine asked, "Could you tell us the reason?"

Ava fell silent once again, then after about thirty seconds, she finally responded in a low voice, "Not yet, but don’t worry, you’ll know when it’s time for you to know."

"Hey, isn’t the difference in treatment too drastic?" Mr. Pannis suddenly exclaimed discontentedly, "When I ask something you don’t want to answer, you just ignore me as if you didn’t hear me. But when they ask you a question you don’t want to answer, you explain patiently to them. This is clear discrimination."

"Everyone, please note. The Fifth District is vast. Just the ground-level buildings cover fifty square kilometers in area. If we include underground and tall structures, the area is at least 500 square kilometers. There are hundreds of labs conducting various research projects." It was clear that Ava once again completely ignored Mr. Pannis’s protest and tried to divert attention with a simple topic, "Perhaps the authorities don’t have the mood now. However, I will take you all for a tour of the responsive areas after the treatment is over."

"Hey, hey, you’re ignoring me again, aren’t you?" Mr. Pannis turned his head, the scene of him quarrelling with the small device on his shoulder looked unusual, "What did I do to offend you? You’ve been targeting me all this time. That’s too much."

"Alright, stop arguing." Catherine chuckled, unable to stop herself. The girls had prepared themselves for the reality that this place may be out of service and pinned their hopes on the underground emergency shelter. However, they couldn’t help but feel tense when their suspicions were confirmed. What if the shelter was just like this place? What if the medical device in the shelter was broken? What if something unexpected happened on the way? Apart from Vivian, who had completely accepted the situation, pessimistic guesses popped out uncontrollably from the girls’ minds, which made their mood gradually tense. But Pannis’ argument with Ava diluted this invisible tension, allowing them to laugh again. Catherine shook her head and said, "Pannis, you really are. Ava is a girl after all, you must quarrel with her. That’s poor."

"Right." Lina vigorously nodded with her silver hair swinging, and said, "The worst."

"I am the victim here, alright? Why do I end up being the worst?" Mr. Pannis looked wronged and mumbled, "Whatever, I won’t argue with you women. Women are the most terrible creatures in the world."

"Huh?" The girls raised their brows simultaneously. Catherine said jokingly, "Dear Mr. Pannis, what did you just say? I think you seem to have forgotten that you are already in the car and there is nowhere to run."

"Hahaha, the environment here is really perfect." Mr. Pannis laughed dryly, mimicking Ava’s distinctive way of pretending not to hear, "The goblins’ technology is impressive, they managed to transform the demiplane in the void into a habitable environment. I wonder how they did it."

Catherine rolled her eyes at Mr. Pannis and ignored his antics, instead, she turned to the small device on his shoulder and asked, "Ava, from your explanation earlier, it seems that you understand what has happened over these years, is that so?"

"Only up until the space anomaly." Ava paused for a moment, not shifting the topic and replied directly, "After the space anomaly occurred, the vast majority of the Crystalline Network collapsed and lost contact with over ninety-nine percent of the control terminals. Only a few terminals remain, which were buried deep underground. There was only one or two control terminals that could observe the outside world, and their locations were remote. Therefore, I could hardly understand the situation outside."

"So, was it caused by the world collapse?" Catherine nodded thoughtfully, "I see. But I find it strange that from the very beginning, although you hid the fact that you have Divine Wisdom, you didn’t seem to have any guard against us except that. I hope you won’t gloss over it with your authorities. Freya told me earlier that even if you have Divine Wisdom and are controlled by authorities, you can still make your own choices to some degree, right?"

"Actually, I’ve seen you guys." Ava fell silent for a longer time before delivering a more shocking statement. (To be continued.
