Chapter 607: Chapter 74 Searle Syndrome_1

Ten sets of tables and chairs were arranged, most of which were not tall, but the desktops were wide enough for a person to lie down and rest. The tables were made of metal, but the desktops were not, they were only framed with metal on all sides. The real desktop was made of a whole piece of Crystal. The surface of the Crystal was as smooth as a water mirror, casting a clear reflection of anyone standing next to it.

On one side of the Reference Center, several chairs were fan-shaped and faced the side wall, with an odd metallic device positioned in the center of the fan-shape in place of a chair, also facing the wall. On the other side of the center was clearly a meeting area, where a long conference table with a dozen chairs was situated, and a large conical structure made of Crystal was placed on the table.

When everyone began considering what material to consult, they suddenly became at a loss. For they knew little about the things in the Reference Center, let alone how to use them. The center had no paper documents, no other artifacts that recorded information, which was contrary to everyone’s expectations.

"I have an idea of how to inquire." To the girls in the past, Pannis seemed to be a monster who knew and could do anything, who could effortlessly solve most problems, and even if he couldn’t, he could always provide some answers, regardless of whether these were issues he ought to know. The girls once joked that perhaps even if they asked him about pregnancy feelings or postpartum depression, they might still get relevant answers. However, this time they rarely saw him clueless, sighing as he wandered around in the large space of the Reference Center: "The Crystal desktops on the tables are actually the goblins’ inquiring devices, but I have no idea how to use them. How about we randomly try pressing some buttons?"

"Don’t just touch anything." Lina once again recalled the disaster caused by fiddling with these Crystal discs in the underground of Angus Village. After looking around subconsciously and noticing no strange magical beasts appearing, she finally calmed down. She glared at Pannis and said, "I do not want a horde of magical beasts to pop up around us waiting for dinner after you press some random buttons, like last time. Isn’t one lesson enough? The consequences of touching things recklessly can be serious."

"It was you who pressed it last time, fine, fine, I won’t say anything." Pannis said with a bitter smile: "Actually, there’s nothing to worry about simply touching these devices. They are just for reading, not controllers."

"Let me try. I have had some contact with the goblin terminals when I was with my teacher. Oh, ’terminal’ is what this thing is called. That’s what my teacher called it. Most of those terminals were pretty simple, not as complex as here. But the way to use them is universal, so I can try." Freya said as she took a seat at one of the deity-designed desks. After a few taps on the surface, the Crystal emitted a faint sound like an electric discharge, and a gentle phosphorescence lit up on its surface. With the phosphorescence finally stabilizing and emitting a continuous light, a deity female figure, recognizable by the third eye on her forehead, appeared on the lit up Crystal. Perhaps due to different aesthetics, the deity woman didn’t seem very beautiful in the eyes of the five people, yet she gave a unique sense of tranquility.

"Hello, everyone, I am Risha, the information manager of the Charlinjet Type 7 Information Processing Terminal." The deity woman’s image began to speak like a normal person: "Welcome, five users. Is there anything I can assist you with?"

"Well, it’s voice-controlled, that’s great, it saves a lot of trouble." Freya, with her round face boasting an attractive smile, greeted, "Hello, Risha, can all operations be controlled by voice with your assistance?"

"Yes, user." Risha nodded in a humanlike manner: "I can help you accomplish all the functions this device has. Of course, you can also manually operate on the panel. I have highlighted the operating instructions on the panel."

"No, no, no, that’s great." Freya shook her head: "I’m just asking casually. I think if it’s limited to voice control, the sound of several people consulting materials at the same time would interfere with each other, wouldn’t it? That would be very inconvenient."

"You can choose to raise the isolation barrier, so there’d be no interference." Risha paused before asking: "Do you need the barrier to be raised now?"

"No need, keep it as it is." Pannis chimed in from the side: "Can the five of us consult materials together?"

"Hello, other user." Risha turned toward Pannis, placing her right hand on her left shoulder and bowing slightly, a gesture unique to the deities: "Your request is feasible. However, if you five want to consult materials and discuss together, I’d suggest you use the three-dimensional conference seating on the left side. Of course, you can also use the projection conference seating on the right side. The three-dimensional conference seating is suitable for reading content with a lot of imagery, while the projection conference seating is more suitable for text-heavy reading."

The five of them looked at each other in surprise, and Freya nodded: "Then let’s go to the three-dimensional conference seating first. We dislike text-heavy content. If there is text in the materials we’re looking up, can you recite it aloud?"

"Of course, that’s part of my duties." Risha smiled gently: "Just have a seat around the three-dimensional conference seating."

Everyone took their seats around the long conference table according to Risha’s instructions. The entire suite of conference tables and chairs seems to cater to the deity users and was entirely made according to the deities’ physique, thus everyone was comfortably seated. As soon as they sat down, the Crystal cone on the conference table lit up. A three-dimensional human figure formed by the Light Curtain came out from above the cone. Although the overall size of the 3D figure was very small, only about forty centimeters tall, every detail of the body was incredibly realistic. Ignoring the size and light shadow issue, it looked no different from a real person.

"Hello users, I am Risha here to serve you." The poised virtual Risha greeting was gentle, "May I ask what kind of information you need?"

"Hello, Risha, I’m Catherine." Catherine side-touched Vivian’s head beside her, "This is Vivian, who has a strange disease. I wonder if you could help detect what this disease is."

"I’m sorry, Catherine, the Charling Terminal does not have a body scan function." Risha, humanely shaking her head, regretfully said, "I can’t fulfill your command, I apologize."

"I am Pannis, please help to conduct a fuzzy search." Recalling how Christo communicated with the control terminal of the huge Goblin City ruins in their daring adventure from the past, Pannis mimicked, "Keywords, disease identification, specific symptoms... search range, biological branches."

"Received the retrieval command, conducting search, search completed, more than four thousand relevant information found, selecting for relevance, after the completion, there are twenty-one highly relevant items." Risha paused for a few seconds after receiving Pannis’s command, then continued, "Would you, user Pannis, like to list all the relevant items or provide keywords for a secondary filter?"

"Can these be used to determine her specific illness?" Pannis inquired under the eyes of the young girls, "Even if the results are plural, that’s not a problem."

"It can be determined." Risha nodded, "The distinguishing information is very detailed; all relevant content points to the same result."

"Phew, list the items." Pannis exhaled, leaning heavily into the chair back, "And give a brief introduction of this disease."

Only then did Catherine realise that her palms were full of sweat, and her back skirt was already soaked. Turning to look at Lina and Freya, both girls shared the same uneasy expression, but managed a weak smile to Catherine’s gaze. Looking at Vivian, surprisingly, the mage girl seemed the most composed of all, calmly seated, silently watching the miniature Risha on the table, as if all this had nothing to do with her.

Noticing Catherine’s gaze, Vivian reached out to pat Catherine’s tense arm, softly comforting, "Sis, it’s pointless to be nervous at this point. We’ve done all we could, and you’ve all made the greatest effort on my behalf already. So, let’s leave the rest to fate, all we need to do is accept it with a smile."

Catherine struggled to give a smile, she felt her face muscles twist, "Don’t worry, there’s no reason to. The goblins have records of ailments. This is a great start. Given their expertise, there should be a solution."

"I’m not worried, it’s you who should be." Vivian’s smile was radiant, innocent and sweet, "I am genuinely happy that you all have come this far for me. It’s not just to comfort you, but I am truly very happy. Even if it turns out to be the worst-case scenario, I can leave with a smile. Of course, I do hope for a good outcome. That way, we can always stay together."

"Definitely, definitely we will always be together." Catherine clasped Vivian’s hand tightly. If Vivian could feel her limbs, she might already be in pain, "We promised to watch the Harvest Festival together. We have to stay together for that promise too."

"But the Harvest Festival has passed." Vivian’s eyes curved into two crescent shapes, "Is it next year?"

"Every year." Catherine seriously said, "Not next year, not any specific year, but every year."

"Catalog printed." Risha’s voice finally sounded again, "According to the symptoms, the disease user Vivian suffers from is called the Searle Syndrome, a very rare disease. The database records available showed that over the past seventeen thousand years, there are only forty-eight cases."

"Is there a way to treat it?" Catherine asked anxiously. (Continues... If you like this work, feel free to recommend and vote for it on qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
