Chapter 515: Chapter 396 Atwa’s Failure
Atwa looked up at the smoke rising above and caught sight of the fire sprinkler facing him, his heart skipped a beat, and he quickly snuffed out his cigarette.
It was no joke, if that water really sprayed out, he probably couldn’t even pay for all this equipment if he sold himself.
Of course, Jenny was just trying to scare him a little.
How could the fire sprinklers here get set off by just a little smoke, and the supercomputer monitors below wouldn’t get damaged by that water either.
Jenny left, carelessly leaving a room card on the table.
Picking up the card and glancing at her graceful figure, Atwa swallowed hard without realizing it.
He wondered what kind of clothes he should change into after dealing with the matter at hand.
He took a sip from the coffee beside him, then refocused his gaze back on his own monitor.
He planned to wrap up this encirclement quickly and then spend a pleasant night with Jenny.
Only now, when he turned his head back, he was somewhat dumbfounded.
A program that had been running automatically on his computer screen had now stopped working, and the cursor, as if stuck, remained still.
"Frozen?"
Atwa slapped the monitor somewhat blankly, then suddenly snapped back to reality.
What kind of joke was this! This was a supercomputer monitor! What was connected below wasn’t some ordinary computer tower, but a supercomputer that occupied an entire room seven stories underground!
To say that this thing would freeze up?
He wouldn’t believe it if you killed him!
Well, if it actually came to his death, then he would believe it.
But that wasn’t the point; the point was, how could things have turned out like this in just the time it took to say a few words?
What he should be seeing now was their own breaching of the opponent’s defenses.
Then some important data packets would be captured, traces found, targets locked.
Even if they hadn’t locked on, it should still look precarious, so why did it suddenly become motionless now?
Just as Atwa was still feeling confused, suddenly the previously frozen computer resumed its functions and the lines of code on the screen began to backspace right before his eyes.
Code, programs, files, logs - everything about this pursuit of M was disappearing fast, leaving behind no trace.
Atwa panicked, he finally snapped back to reality and his hands flew wildly across the keyboard, but the monitor showed no effect whatsoever.
"Beep~"
With a quiet sound, the supercomputer before him just shut itself down, then after a long wait, it finally restarted.
"Thud!"
Atwa’s coffee spilled, splashing on the keyboard and making a mess of the entire desk.
But where was the mood to care about such things now? All he could feel was a chill in his heart, he knew better than anyone what had just happened.
It could be said that in the span of just now, his machine had completely slipped out of control.
Even under the control of some unknown entity, it had performed a self-deletion, shutdown, and restart.
You have to understand, this was a supercomputer, a kind of level that in some small countries, they might not even have a single one of their own.
Its computational power could easily crush even the most advanced of ordinary computers, and he had never heard of such a preposterous scene as was unfolding before his eyes now.
Atwa’s face turned extremely ugly.
Everything that was happening now was illustrating one problem.
The opponent had completely seized control of his computer!
If that person had decided to do anything else just now, he would have been utterly powerless to stop them!
In their circles, this situation had a term called "total enslavement," a fate considered even more humiliating than being used as a stepping-stone like a mindless drone.
To escape from this predicament, the only option was the most desperate and shameful one—forced physical power down.
This was the first time Atwa had been defeated so thoroughly, so battered and clueless, since he began his career.
Yes, even now, he still couldn’t figure out what had happened, why the situation, which had seemed so promising before, had suddenly turned out this way.
It seemed as if everything fell apart like a nightmare right after he glanced at a beautiful woman.
Atwa even began to feel as if he was still asleep, as if he hadn’t woken up.
The computer had rebooted by now, and although the supercomputer was more advanced, it started up slower than many old clunkers.
This machine, with more than 27 million nodes and nearly 40,000 cores, required several minutes to boot up all the nodes.
Entering full operational status could take even longer, from a minimum of thirty minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data stored.
During the nearly ten minutes of waiting, however, time seemed to have flashed by for Atwa, who had spent it almost entirely in a daze.
"Impossible... impossible... what the hell happened..."
Even now, Atwa himself could hardly believe it.
He opened the interface where he had been working, but all the records stored there had been deleted, not leaving a single trace.
He searched the computer’s other spaces again, but it was all in vain.
Atwa walked out of his office in a daze, into the main hall outside.
At that moment, from the adjacent office, several other people emerged, bearing a look that seemed somewhat similar to his own.
"Shadow, you too..."
Atwa stuttered out a word, but he had already read the answer in the other person’s eyes before he could finish his sentence.
The main hall was now abuzz; everyone there was involved in this operation to encircle the enemy.
If Atwa and Shadow were considered the main forces, then these people were the supporting cast.
Clearly, everyone had been ensnared. The mysterious person had managed to knock down the entire Hurricane Bureau at the same time.
"This definitely isn’t M’s doing, M doesn’t have this level of skill... no! It’s impossible for anyone in this world to have this sort of power!"
Atwa overheard someone whispering nearby.
"Maybe we all forgot about something..."
"What?"
"Do you remember the icons M used to post on those websites?"
"Icon? Do you mean that odd seven-pointed star? What about it? Don’t tell me..."
The speaker paused mid-sentence, then widened his eyes and said:
"Hiss... You’re suggesting that it’s a symbol of a super hacker organization? That this time, someone else from that organization made their move...?"
Upon hearing this, his companion nodded slightly.
"But how could that be possible... How could anyone manage to do that? He practically breached our defenses in an instant, overtaking control..."
"And besides, we have several supercomputers here! It’s unbelievable that someone could actually achieve this..."
