Chapter 480: Chapter 98 Cornflower

The body sensor had another advantage: since it utilized the pyroelectric effect rather than optical imaging, it meant that even if the mysterious assassin could become invisible, they would still not escape detection by the body sensor.

Li Yu had prepared two body sensors before setting out from Green Field, and now they came in handy.

Furthermore, for added security, Li Yu also left behind a thermal imager to facilitate Thomas and the others in capturing the invisible person, should the assassin truly possess the ability to become unseen.

If that person didn’t show up, well and good, but if they dared to appear again, they certainly wouldn’t be able to leave this inn.

A troubling issue that had been causing everyone headaches was thus easily resolved by the Prophet of the Double Rest Sect.

Wild and the others once again marveled at the strength of Merlin and Saturday while finally understanding why Lady Ireya trusted Li Yu so much, even to the point of following his advice.

Later, Ireya and Li Yu discussed how to clear up the dragon-slaying misunderstanding with His Majesty, the Emperor, when they entered the Imperial Palace the next day.

Miss Rabbit had been pondering this upcoming audience all the way and felt she should tell the truth, even if it might offend the Emperor.

But Ireya had never claimed to have slain the dragon by herself, nor had she ever boasted about her extraordinary martial prowess.

The notion of Meat Mountain was purely Timothy’s bad taste, his way of getting back at the Lady for forcing him to perform in "Death of the Demon Dragon," so he chose an actress who was incredibly stout and looked like a wild person to play the role of Ireya.

The bloody battle with the giant dragon was merely a requirement of the plot.

The people of Royal Capital, including His Majesty the Emperor, took the drama’s contents for reality—surely such a mistake couldn’t be blamed on the Lady, right?

Moreover, Ireya wasn’t just there to clarify misunderstandings. She had also carefully prepared a gift, believing that even if the Emperor still felt some resentment after seeing the present, it should alleviate much of it.

However, having said that, Ireya still felt somewhat uncertain.

The main reason was that the rumors about that Emperor had been quite unfavorable in recent years.

Ever since converting to the Life Church, Edward II’s disposition was said to have changed drastically, shifting from being hearty and tolerant to being capricious and unpredictable.

Moreover, he no longer wished to heed the sincere advice given by the Prime Minister and the Imperial Conference. Instead, he turned directly to the Priest of Cornelia for answers.

Many of his subsequent initiatives and decrees were highly controversial, and now even the Royal Knight Order, who should be most loyal to him, felt disgruntled due to the halt of the knighting ceremonies, leaving many young Squire Knights dissatisfied.

The Lady pondered that although this didn’t exactly match the depiction of the so-called inept rulers in plays and novels, it wasn’t far off.

And as for her role in eliminating the threat in the Westlands by slaying the Evil Dragon, she would certainly be seen as a loyal subject. However, the script didn’t seem quite right to her.

Miss Rabbit, feeling anxious, could only pray to the omnipotent Saturday that she would manage to turn peril into safety this time.

But with the martial competition imminent, the city was now brimming with a festive atmosphere. It seemed that His Majesty the Emperor likely would not make things too ugly at this time.

At most, he would take back the sword bestowed upon her and her knighthood. If it came to that, although the Lady would feel a bit saddened, she would accept it.

The young woman spent a whole night lost in thought and hardly slept. The next morning she arrived at the gates of the Imperial Palace, sporting dark circles under her eyes.

While the guards went in to announce her, Ireya took the opportunity to scrutinize the majestic castle before her.

This place was also the work of the notorious historical tyrant, Byron I.

Originally called the Tower of Glory, because it was either Gold or Jewelry inside, shining brilliantly and dazzlingly opulent. Even a mere chip from its structure would be enough for an ordinary person to spend for a lifetime.

But after Byron I was overthrown, his son succeeded him. To prove he was different from his father, that he wouldn’t indulge in pleasures,

the New Emperor had all the Gold and Jewelry stripped out to replenish the state treasury, although the castle’s main structure was preserved because it had already been built. It was renamed Junlin Tower.

Even now, you can catch a glimpse of the castle’s past splendor and magnificence through the exquisite bas-reliefs on the doors.

After a while, the guard who had gone in to announce their arrival returned, saying the Emperor was still asleep, but the Queen was awake. Hearing that the Dragon Slayer Knight anointed by His Majesty had arrived, she invited Ireya to sit in the garden.

Miss Rabbit nodded and followed a Maid through the spacious hall and several corridors, then up a stone staircase, to a slightly smaller hall.

Passing through this hall, and another corridor, they finally could see the garden.

Inside, many small blue flowers bloomed. The Lady craned her neck to look and couldn’t recognize what flowers they were.

A voice arose from her right, "These are cornflowers, they are found everywhere in my homeland."

Miss Rabbit followed the voice and saw an exceptionally beautiful woman with pointed ears standing among the flowers.

Ireya was stunned, captivated by the woman’s beauty even as a fellow female.

She even forgot all her words, her mouth half-open, unable to utter a single word.

However, the woman seemed accustomed to seeing others’ stunned reactions and did not mind it. She was rather curious as she observed the young girl opposite her.

"You are Ireya, so young, and not as... brawny as I imagined,"

"Brawny," Miss Rabbit helped the woman finish her sentence, smiling wryly. "I’ve heard that from many people already. I’m sorry to disappoint you, Empress Heloise."

"How do you know I’m disappointed?" Heloise asked lightly. "Who says a hero must look brave and terrifying? Besides, beauty is the most useful weapon a woman can have."

"I am not as beautiful as you," hurried Miss Rabbit.

"You just haven’t blossomed yet. Of course, even if you did, you still wouldn’t be as beautiful as I am. When Edward II saw me, he begged my father to marry me off to him on just a single glance."

The Lady wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she felt there was a faint scorn on the corners of Heloise’s mouth as she spoke.

However, the Empress didn’t dwell on that topic and instead asked, "Did you really kill a dragon?"

"Uh, strictly speaking, it was Merlin and I, along with many others, who killed that dragon."

"What did he look like?"

"Do you mean Merlin? He always wears black."

"I’m not interested in that Merlin. I am asking about the dragon. I saw the remains left by that creature on the throne of the Vespasian Family."

"Oh, it was very large, about as tall as three or four men, and it could fly. It was also very fast, and ordinary swords could hardly hurt it."

"Was it beautiful?"

"I... don’t know. Actually, seeing it with my own eyes was quite terrifying. That sense of oppression made my calves tremble uncontrollably."

"What a pity, I never got to see one for myself," lamented the Queen.
