Chapter 447: Chapter 65 Abus

"Who are these people?" Ireya asked.

"Residents of the city," Ferdinand replied, "Sir Judith suspects they are connected to Hirodod and are spies for the Blood Moon Association, so he had them and their families arrested."

"So many people are spies for the Blood Moon Association?" the Lady was taken aback.

"Of course not," Ferdinand shook his head, "the Blood Moon Association is well-organized and covert in its operations, making it difficult to be apprehended. Furthermore, its followers are all defiant unto death and would not betray others even when caught. Most of these people are just ordinary civilians.

"They might have spoken a few words of praise for Hirodod after a few drinks at the tavern or complained about the Marier family and then got arrested.

"Sir Judith’s uncle died in Rock Snow City, and then he lost a son at Teacup Castle. He loathes Hirodod and the Blood Moon Association to the bone, putting a lot of pressure on his subordinates to capture a sufficient number within a short time. Unable to achieve that, they can only make do with civilians."

"Won’t this lead to trouble?" Ireya frowned.

"Who knows, I have spent a day in this city and can feel the resentment building up. However, the Marier family is after all a prominent house of the West, their ancestors built this city, and have ruled it ever since, for over two thousand seven hundred years.

"They have faced crises more severe than this, but now they still remain the masters of Lake City."

As Ferdinand was speaking, from a butcher shop across the street, suddenly emerged about twenty men cloaked in grey linen, wielding butcher knives and wearing masks.

The leader was shouting, "The Blood Moon has risen, cleanse this mortal world! Do not fear, do not retreat, take up arms, and defend our brothers and sisters! The goddess will be with us!!!"

And with that, he charged at the Marier family guards escorting the prison wagon.

His companions also initiated a charge behind him, like a pack of starving wolves, they relentlessly attacked the wagon!

The Marier family guards, although outnumbered and only half as many as their opponents, did not panic. They all drew their swords, preparing for battle.

The leading Guard Captain must have had some of the Marier bloodline; his pupils were wider than the average person’s, and his eyebrows were raised on the sides.

He was the only one among the guards who did not immediately draw his sword until the group of masked men had nearly reached him.

He gave a cold laugh, not backing down but advancing, taking a half-step forward, then the Lady saw a head flying into the air!

It was precisely the masked man who had been shouting. Following that, the Guard Captain brought down his sword, felling two more men in succession.

His display of martial prowess inspired the other Marier family guards, and soon they clashed with those unidentified Men in Black.

The battle lasted less than five minutes before all the masked men were dead, their blood staining half the street, the air thick with the scent of blood.

Four of the Marier family guards were injured, with only one severely wounded.

Jude only watched the fight for a moment when it began, then lost interest and directed other Black Hound guards to move the luggage into the inn.

Thomas, however, continued to guard the Lady.

"Go, report to the sheriff that we’ve killed twenty-three heretics of the Blood Moon Association," the leading Guard Captain said to a subordinate guard, "Also, check who owns that butcher shop, and if he has any friends or relatives in the city, arrest them all."

After finishing his sentence, he suddenly looked towards the people of Green Field, and said, "You all seem like new faces here."

"So, has Lake City begun forbidding outsiders from entering now?" the Lady asked indifferently.

"Of course not, we welcome guests from afar, as long as you abide by the rules here," the Guard Captain with wide pupils said as he pulled out a handkerchief to wipe the fresh blood on his hands.

He was somewhat surprised; after witnessing the bloody scene that had just occurred, most of the people on the street showed some physiological reactions, and the looks in their eyes revealed a trace of fear when they looked at him, except for this group of people who seemed very calm.

This made him curious about the identities of Ireya and her companions.

At that moment, a guard ran over in a hurry, whispers something into his ear, and the Guard Captain’s expression changed slightly after hearing it.

"Sir Ferdinand, I wasn’t aware that you were here as well."

"It’s all right, I’m just staying here for one night and will be leaving the city tomorrow to continue on my journey," said the Family Head of the Batoris Family.

"I hope you and your men can enjoy your time in Lake City, I still have duties to attend to, so I’ll take my leave first."

After saying so, the Guard Captain with wide pupils left with the guards and prisoners.

Although there was a slight interlude, the Lady and her entourage finally managed to arrive at the inn smoothly.

Ferdinand had booked the entire place.

Ireya, who had been traveling for days, was also tired by now; she was planning to eat something and then go back to her room to rest when she saw Jude come downstairs with a boy about twelve or thirteen years old in tow.

The latter was struggling violently, saying, "Let go of me, let go quickly! I’m not a thief!!!"

"Then you’ll need to explain why I found you behind the shelf under the window sill?" Jude said.

"I was just taking a nap there, basking in the sun! That’s what I did before you arrived. The innkeeper Uncle Angi can vouch for me; my father is the Butcher Habif from the meat shop next door."

The boy had barely finished speaking when he realized that the inn had suddenly fallen into an eerie silence, with no one speaking for a while.

"What’s wrong?" The boy didn’t know what he had said wrong. "Come on, say something. I warn you, if I don’t get home before sunset, my father is going to ask the sheriff for help, and then you’ll all be in trouble."

"What shall we do?" Jude passed the question to the Lady.

Ireya coughed twice, and before she could speak, a voice rang out, "I beseech you, Lords and Ladies, please save this child!"

The speaker was the innkeeper, Angi, a Dwarf who ran the inn with his wife and two daughters.

"Save me? Why do I need saving when I’m perfectly fine?!" the boy said in confusion. "Uncle Angi, you don’t need to beg them; I don’t believe they dare to lay a hand on me in Lake City!"

"Shut your mouth, Abus!" The normally smiling Dwarf sternly scolded, showing a rare serious expression.

After that, he continued to plead with the people, "I don’t know why this child’s father has lost his senses, but I can assure you this child is innocent; he doesn’t know anything."

"Who says I don’t, I know a lot of things!" Abus protested loudly. "I can clean rooms, make honey apple pie, and even feed horses. One day I’m going to become an Attendant to a Lord Knight!"
