Chapter 59: 059 Power surge

Hungry!

Hungry!

So hungry!

It was somewhat similar to the first time Carl practiced the breathing technique; every cell in his body roared with hunger, but the intensity was far beyond any level he had known.

This time, the hunger rooted in his body’s instincts was so strong that not even the absolute rationality brought about by the Divine Domain Fragment could suppress it.

SWISH!

Carl’s eyes snapped open as he lunged at the pile of Exotic Beast Meat beside him. He didn’t care that it hadn’t been processed and stuffed it into his mouth.

His teeth clenched, easily tearing apart the tough Exotic Beast Meat, which, mixed with saliva, rolled into his stomach.

His stomach churned madly, rapidly absorbing the nutrients.

Carl, devouring the meat, was like a rapidly operating meat grinder; piles of Exotic Beast Meat were consumed at a visibly fast pace.

After a long while,

PHEW...

An unprecedented sense of fullness rose in his heart, making Carl lift his head and exhale turbid air, his eyes once again reflecting rationality.

That was impulsive.

The practice of the breathing technique emphasized a gradual and systematic progression.

From beginner to proficient, and then to advanced, the transport and control of the Breath within the body varied at each stage.

The further along, the more complex the circulation of Breath becomes, and correspondingly, the better the tempering of the body.

Carl, with his perfect control over his body, skipped the first two stages and started directly at the advanced level.

It wasn’t that he was reckless. He had done the same with the Poison Wolf Breathing Technique previously.

If he could perfectly control his physical body and achieve a deeper level of tempering, why waste time on the previous steps?

But he clearly underestimated the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique!

This breathing technique was vastly different at each stage.

Especially in terms of the consumption and transformation of energy within the body, each stage saw an exponential increase.

One should start as a beginner, then become proficient. Mastering the technique step by step and laying a solid foundation allows the body to gradually adapt to the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique; that’s the normal cultivation process.

Carl started directly at an advanced level, and crucially, he succeeded. The breathing technique then naturally began to rapidly devour the energy within his body to maintain its operation.

If not for the ample supply of Exotic Beast Meat, Carl feared he might have been drained dry by now.

Fortunately, in the end, there was no danger.

Moreover, because he successfully cultivated the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique and reached the advanced realm, the benefits were astonishing.

Name: Carl

Constitution: 1.47

Spiritual Power: 1.92

Source Material: 0

Profession: Knight Attendant, Basic-level Wizard Apprentice

Rapid progress!

Carl’s eyes lit up.

Not considering the points added by the Source Material, this cultivation of the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique resulted in increases in both Constitution and Spiritual Power.

They both increased by more than 0.2.

One should know that the total attributes of a healthy adult male are only about 0.5, and at his stage of advancement, it becomes ever more difficult to increase strength further.

A Spiritual Power of 1.92 made it possible to construct the third Zero-Circle Magic in his Sea of Consciousness and advance to an Intermediate Wizard Apprentice.

A Constitution of 1.47...

Even a Knight who has advanced for many years may not amount to this!

After the surprise, Carl furrowed his brows, a confused look on his face.

Why have I grown so strong?

It’s one thing for Constitution to improve – the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique is indeed a high-quality technique, especially good at increasing strength, and he had devoured a large amount of Exotic Beast Meat.

The improvement, though exaggerated, is not unacceptable.

But what about Spiritual Power? Even with a Meditation Method, it’s impossible to have such a huge increase after the first cultivation. Could it be related to the Goddess’s blessing?

Memories of the voice that had echoed in his Sea of Consciousness came flooding back, plunging Carl into contemplation.

The Moon Goddess, she hasn’t fallen?

In the world where Black City was located, Divine once existed, and it is said that several Dukes possessed Divine Bloodlines.

As for why the Divine fell, no one knows. Even the timing of the event cannot be traced. It’s as if that part of history has been erased.

Enough!

Shaking his head, Carl dismissed the thoughts. Matters of the Divine are beyond my current reach; overthinking is pointless and only leads to trouble.

Now, he might as well complete the construction of the third Zero-Circle Magic and become an Intermediate Wizard Apprentice.

「Black City.」

As Carl packed his belongings, he pondered his next steps.

Due to drug tolerance, the Light of Wisdom, made mainly from Soul Powder, was having less and less effect on increasing Spiritual Power.

However, continuing to take it was still effective.

But the prospect of quickly ascending to the level of an Advanced Wizard Apprentice currently seemed impossible.

Similarly, ordinary Exotic Beast Meat was no longer very useful to him, and high-quality Exotic Beast Meat was too rare.

I am too greedy! he thought.

Whether it’s the potions that increase Spiritual Power or the Exotic Beast Meat that enhances Constitution, others don’t even have the chance to obtain them.

In less than a year, I’ve undergone such great changes; I should be content.

Now... I shall focus on becoming a Knight first.

"Uncle."

Xiaonan hoisted his package. "We’re all set over here."

"Mm."

Carl nodded. "Then let’s go."

He had already collected enough points to exchange for a Life Potion, while Xiaonan planned to exchange for a bronze shield to improve his defense against enemies.

The Mute was also in their company.

Ayala seemed intent on nurturing Xiaonan and the Mute, allowing them both to develop the ability to stand on their own, and thus she did not accompany them this time.

The marketplace was as bustling as ever, only now, there were more mercenaries dressed in odd outfits.

These mercenaries would yell out loud in the streets from time to time, a stark contrast to the cautious miners in the city.

"Once Uncle becomes a Knight, we get to share in the benefits," Xiaonan grinned and said. "In the future, besides the Brotherhood and the Shadow Alliance having Knights for protection, Black City will have Uncle and us. Should we come up with a cool name?"

"Knight." Carl shook his head. "Let’s become one first."

The Mute wasn’t truly mute; he just hardly ever spoke. His name was Leon, and it was said he came from a well-to-do family, though no one knew why he had ended up as a miner in Black City.

"He’ll definitely make it," Leon spoke in a muffled tone. "Uncle will surely become a Knight!"

Xiaonan nodded in agreement.

They had full confidence in Carl, even more so than Carl himself, as if him becoming a Knight was a given.

"What’s this?" Carl looked amused. "You’re not planning on leaving Black City anymore?"

"Leave?"

They both were taken aback.

Of course, they wanted to leave Black City. It was a constant thought, but lately, that idea had indeed faded.

Xiaonan had become a Knight Attendant, so he might very well become a Knight himself in the future.

Leon also obtained a Dharma Seal.

The key factor was Carl!

With Carl’s help, they had no worries about food and drink in Black City and even had the potential to advance further, living the life others could only dream of.

Once Carl became a Knight, their small team’s status in the city would also rise.

Why not continue to stay, then?

"Uncle," Leon ventured, "are you going to leave Black City?"

"Perhaps," Carl spoke neutrally. "Or rather, do you want to stay here for the rest of your lives?"

"That..." Xiaonan scratched his head and gave a silly smile. "If Uncle leaves, we leave too."

Leon nodded.

"We’re here." Carl looked up to indicate their arrival and stepped toward the stronghold set up by the City Guard in the Laka Marketplace.

At the same time, he took out his certification. "I’m here to exchange for a Life Potion."

"Life Potion?"

The soldier took the certification, checked it, and then nodded. "It’s enough."

He then looked towards Xiaonan and Leon. "Are you together?"

"Yes," Xiaonan said. "Together."

"Then come along." The soldier waved his hand, signaling to someone behind him. "Take them down."

Down?

Carl didn’t frown. Seeing the normal expressions of the others present, he hesitated for a moment before stepping forward to follow.

Having been in Black City for so long, this was Carl’s first time going down a mine.

It was different from what he had imagined.

The mine had a mechanism similar to an elevator; a few people stood on a wooden platform while others turned a winch to lower or raise them.

There were also mine shafts, but they weren’t nearly as convenient as this kind of direct up-and-down platform.

As the platform descended, the opening above grew smaller and smaller, and the deep darkness bit by bit began to devour everything around.

Torches appeared, bringing a faint light.

THUMP!

The platform hit the bottom, kicking up some dust, and a squad of fully armed soldiers clattered towards them.

"Move!" one shouted in a low voice. "Get inside!"

Hmm?

Carl’s brows furrowed, and he took a slow step back. "Perhaps I could come back another time to exchange for the Life Potion?"
