Chapter 57: 057 Giant Spirit

"Rat Woman!"

The burly Lakin’s eyes bulged, bloodshot with rage. With a ROAR, he swung his chain and lunged forward. "ARGH... I’m going to kill you!"

He had always harbored a special fondness for the Rat Woman, but his personality had prevented him from showing it. Instead, he kept it buried deep in his heart.

Now, seeing the Rat Woman die so brutally before his eyes, endless anger surged into his mind. He lost all rationality and began Burning his life force to fight desperately.

ROAR!

Amidst the furious roar, Lakin’s muscles swelled, the veins on his forehead bulged violently, and blood even began to seep from his pores. Simultaneously, his already formidable strength surged once more.

WHOOSH...

The iron ball whistled through the air. Upon hitting the wall, it exploded with incredible force, smashing a stone wall to rubble with a thunderous BOOM! Dust billowed into the air.

Carl used his movement technique to dodge the iron ball, not wanting to get entangled with his opponent.

The Big Man was incredibly strong, but not fast, especially now in his frenzied state. It was best to avoid his current onslaught and focus on killing the archer brother and sister first. The two of them were already planning to flee.

SWOOSH!

He vaulted onto a roof ridge. Before Carl could make a move, the ground before him began to tremble violently. Nearby houses also began to shake incessantly.

THUD!

THUD!

Dull, heavy thuds approached at an alarming speed.

His Poison Wolf Breathing Technique heightened his senses to danger, causing his body to tense and his expression to turn grave.

What was it?

BOOM!

A dilapidated house, as if struck head-on by a battering ram, instantly shattered into pieces.

Through the swirling dust, a giant hand, as large as a millstone, reached out. It grabbed a stone wall and effortlessly tore it away.

"Teach!"

"Learn!"

"Train!"

Words in an ancient tongue echoed all around.

Carl’s expression darkened, and he instinctively took a step back.

He saw a hulking giant, about five meters tall, appear before him.

The giant was clad in armor, but it was rusty and corroded, devoid of its former majesty. The body beneath the armor was long devoid of life, with only scraps of rotten flesh clinging to its white bones. Yet, a strange power allowed it to move. Its giant palm, comparable to a millstone, swept out gently, causing the houses and walls in its path to collapse one after another.

"Train!"

"Guardian..."

Beneath its helmet, the skeletal jawbone opened and closed, emitting a deep, monotonous voice that seemed eternally unchanging.

A Giant Spirit!

Carl’s expression changed drastically.

Rumors in the city spoke of a terrifying entity buried underground, guarded by powerful giants. These giants had long since died, but a deep-seated obsession had transformed them into guardians of the tomb, compelling them to continue their duties from life. It was said that only a Knight could defeat a Giant Spirit!

But no one ever said Giant Spirits could speak!

That woman... she could control a Giant Spirit? No! If she could really control the Giant Spirit, why would they flee? This Giant Spirit was probably just summoned and isn’t under their control.

「In the ruins.」

Mei tightly held her younger sister. They curled up, hiding beneath the dirt and desperately holding their breath. Her sister’s eyelids quivered, filled with fear. She knew full well that if they were discovered, they would likely not escape death today. Their only hope was that luck was on their side.

"Duty!"

The Giant Spirit let out a low roar. After scanning its surroundings, its ’gaze’ naturally fell upon Carl.

This is bad!

Carl’s heart pounded. He hurriedly leaped off the roof ridge just as the house behind him collapsed with a thunderous CRASH.

"Run!"

Mei pushed aside the dirt and, pulling her sister, sprinted into the distance. Whatever happened next was no longer their concern.

「On the other side.」

"Carl!"

Before Carl, having just landed, could make a move, Lakin was already roaring and charging at him. "Die!"

WHOOSH...

The iron ball whizzed towards his face.

Carl’s eyes flickered. His broad sword swung sideways, and he employed his Momentum Redirection Art to divert the iron ball backward.

BANG!

The Giant Spirit had just burst from the ruins when the iron ball struck it in the face. The immense force made it involuntarily reel backward.

However, the Giant Spirit declared, "Enemy! Guardian...duty..."

Once the Giant Spirit stabilized itself, it charged forward like a moving house. Its large hand swept out, creating a powerful gust of wind that rushed straight for Lakin. It appeared to move slowly, but each stride covered the distance of several normal steps, so its speed was not slow at all. It was even surprisingly fast!

Facing its charge head-on, Lakin’s expression stiffened, his eyes filled with despair.

"ARGH!"

With a roar, Lakin, unwilling to die so easily, swung his chain wildly and CRASHED into the Giant Spirit.

CRASH!

THUMP!

A dull thud echoed.

Facing a Giant Spirit whose strength far surpassed that of a Knight, Lakin had almost no power to resist and was overwhelmed. He hadn’t even managed to buy Carl much time.

WHOOSH...

The wind howled.

After swatting Lakin to death with a few blows, the Giant Spirit pursued Carl. Its descending hand was like a moving door panel, and Carl barely managed to dodge by pushing his movement technique to its limits.

Before he could even catch his breath, the massive hand suddenly flipped, executing an extremely exquisite Martial Art.

Or is it a palm technique?

SMACK!

Even though Carl managed to block in time, he couldn’t withstand the immense force and was sent flying several meters, crashing heavily into a mud pit.

ROAR!

The roar was filled with intense pain.

The Giant Spirit reeled back, thick white smoke billowing from its palm. It flailed its arm wildly as if trying to shake something off.

What’s happening?

As Carl struggled to his feet, he was momentarily stunned by the sight. However, he didn’t stop. He quickly raised his left hand and activated his Fire Seals, unleashing a barrage of Fireballs at the Giant Spirit.

BOOM!

BOOM!

Fireballs exploded against the Giant Spirit’s body. The flames melted its armor and made the Giant Spirit instinctively raise its hands to cover its head.

Is it afraid of fire? No! It’s not the fire it fears!

A thought struck Carl, and he flicked his fingers.

SWISH!

A streak of white light shot out, exploding in front of the Giant Spirit.

Flash Spell!

This was a little spellcasting trick Carl had devised: he could launch the Flash Spell and trigger it from a distance. Doing so consumed more spiritual power but also increased the spell’s potency. The effect was significant.

Indeed, the Giant Spirit doesn’t fear the flames, but the bright light they produce. The Flash Spell is perfect for this!

The sudden burst of white light caused white smoke to rise from all over the Giant Spirit’s body. It lost control and staggered backward, momentarily incapable of resisting.

Carl charged forward. Battle Skill—Eagle Strike!

Simultaneously, he threw the other porcelain bottle—the one containing Holy Water—at the back of the Giant Spirit’s neck.

CRASH!

The porcelain bottle shattered. The Holy Water splashed onto the back of the Giant Spirit’s neck.

Carl always carried two porcelain bottles of Holy Water. One had been shattered by the Giant Spirit earlier.

And that’s why the Giant Spirit’s hand smoked and it roared in agony—it must have been splashed with Holy Water!

Of course, this was just Carl’s speculation for now.

The next moment, ROAR!

The Giant Spirit shook its head wildly. Thick smoke billowed from its neck, and the rotten flesh and bones within were visibly dissolving at an alarming rate.

Indeed! My guess was correct!

Carl’s eyes lit up. He abandoned the thought of fleeing and leaped into the air, raising his reforged broad sword high. He spun like a gyroscope, bringing the blade down with incredible speed.

Battle Skill—Gale Slash!

WHAM!

CRACK...

Six afterimages plus his true form—seven strikes in total—landed simultaneously on the Giant Spirit’s vulnerable neck.

SQUELCH!

With a sickening thud, its head, the size of a fish tank, paused for a split second before rolling off its body.

THUD!

As the head thudded to the ground, the Giant Spirit’s body seemed to lose all support and quietly disintegrated into ash. It was as if time, stagnant for millennia, had suddenly resumed its flow. Everything that had been preserved began to decay, and all that comprised the Giant Spirit—rotten flesh, white bones, armor—turned to nothingness. A gust of wind scattered the ashes, leaving only a black iron plaque where it had stood.
