Chapter 50: 050 Hunt

「Several days later.」

Carl and his group had already ventured deep into the urban area.

Here, the most abundant were not ferocious beasts or strange creatures, but semi-dead beings mutated by the erosion of negative energy. They retained some of their instincts from when they were alive, unaware of pain, never tiring, with increased speed and strength to some extent. And they had an insatiable craving for fresh blood. Once targeted by them, it often meant a fight to the death. The key issue was that if one was injured by these creatures and didn’t handle the wounds promptly, they too would undergo mutation. Therefore, few people were willing to provoke them.

WHIMPER...

A few half-dead people staggered toward them from the street corner. Their clothes were tattered, their flesh pale, and their fingers were calloused—clearly, they had been miners underground in their previous lives. Even though they moved slowly at the moment, once they spotted a target, they would launch a frenzied attack. They had no weaknesses and never tired, knowing only slaughter!

SWOOSH!

THUD! THUD!

A few arrows flew through the air, piercing the bodies of the half-dead. Three of them emitted white smoke, screaming in agony, while another showed no reaction and even sped up toward the group.

"Nan!" Ayala shouted, "You forgot the Holy Water again!"

"I did soak them," Nan said, his forehead sweaty, "It must have dried up."

Holy Water contained Divine Power, but its essence was still ordinary water, which could evaporate from the arrows over time. By then, it would lose its effectiveness against undead creatures. Like now.

"Quiet." Carl drew his broad sword and said, "It’s charging at us."

Saying so, he flashed forward, meeting the oncoming half-dead, his broad sword stirring up a Gale.

STAB!

SWEEP!

SLASH!

...

After several strikes, the headless corpse of the half-dead fell at his feet. Ayala and the others also rushed forward. Weakened by the Holy Water, the half-dead were like slow-moving corpses, their threat significantly reduced. It didn’t take long to achieve results. Ayala pulled out a dagger and chopped off the pinky of one half-dead, using it as proof to exchange for supplies with the City Guard. Carl collected the soul powder from the ground.

"Hm?"

His ears twitching slightly, Carl stood up and looked towards a nearby dark alley. His expression darkened as he raised his hand to activate a Fire Seal.

WHOOSH...

The Fireball roared out, exploding in the darkness.

"Scram!" Carl’s voice was icy, as shadows in the alley moved, accompanied by the sounds of rapid retreat.

"Uncle," Ayala approached and asked, "someone trying to take advantage of us again?"

"Yes," Carl nodded. "We’re deep into the urban area. It’s not just the half-dead creatures that are dangerous, but also the living. Let’s call it a day."

"Ah!" Nan looked disappointed. "Uncle, it’s still early. Why don’t we look around some more? We might still find something."

The others nodded in agreement. For them, with the Holy Water weakening the half-dead and Carl in command, fighting was quite easy. Unfortunately, Carl always wanted to end it before they had their fill.

"Human energy is limited. After a certain amount of time, fatigue inevitably sets in, making it hard to respond promptly to danger when it occurs," Carl shook his head. "Let’s keep our spirits up and head back now while we still have the energy. Don’t be too greedy."

His supply of Potions was down to one reserved bottle, and the Holy Water needed replenishing as well. Indeed, it was getting late.

Reluctantly, everyone agreed.

Carl and his team had ventured deep into the urban area without encountering much danger. First, they had the aid of Holy Water, which significantly weakened the threat of the half-dead creatures. Second, the group cooperated well, and their combined strength spared them many troubles.

Others were not so lucky.

「In a certain district,」

A pair of identical twins were stopped by a group of people.

"Hand over your stuff, and you can leave."

The leader of the group, who was bald with strange patterns on his face, held a spiked club and sneered, "Otherwise, it’s not worth losing your life over the trinkets you carry."

The twins’ faces tensed. They exchanged a glance and, in perfect agreement, turned and fled without a word.

HAH...

The bald man shook his head. "Fools!"

A moment later, two almost identical heads had been cut off and hung on a flagpole, their faces twisted grotesquely.

COUGH!

COUGH! COUGH!

A man stumbled forward holding a bizarre longsword, coughing up blood from time to time but dared not stop walking. Not until the sounds behind him had ceased did he lean against the wall, panting desperately, his body trembling uncontrollably.

Damn devils, why is there a Holy Knight here? I almost died!

COUGH! COUGH!

"EH?" Just then, a surprised voice arose, followed immediately by several people appearing from the road ahead.

One of them laughed. "Lucky day! We just left the house and here comes prey delivered straight to us."

"A nearly dead man, probably carries nothing valuable." Someone shook his head, approached with a large cleaver, and said, "I’ll send him to meet Hades!"

THWACK!

A spike drove through the speaker’s chest, emerging from his back, the long, slender spike covered with fresh blood. Strangely, the spike trembled slightly as if alive, and the blood it touched was slowly Devoured by it until it shone anew.

CLANG...

The large cleaver fell heavily to the ground. The one intending to send others to see Hades had gone first himself.

HAH... The man by the wall lowered his head and chuckled softly. "Really, what riffraff. And they dare to strut before me?"

SWISH!

The man flicked his thin sword gently. In an instant, a myriad of afterimages flashed by, and the corpse in front disintegrated like tofu, cut into evenly sized pieces and scattering on the ground.

SSSS...

The man lifted his neck, his face full of relief. This fresh life force is indeed intoxicating.

Only then did the others clearly see the man’s features. He had an ordinary face under his unruly blond hair, but a bizarre scar stretched from his forehead to his chin, as if a sword had split him in two.

"You..."

"He’s Blood Stinger of the Shadow Alliance!"

"Run!"

Recognizing his face, their expressions changed drastically, and they fled with no desire for combat.

HMPH!

The scoff was distant at first, but by its end, it was right beside their ears, accompanied by flashes of sword shadows. The man’s sword was thin and long, like a spike growing out of a sword hilt. He stepped forward, wielding the thin sword lightly, and one after another, the men before him fell to the ground. No one could withstand a single strike!

"Don’t!" A woman cried, kneeling on the ground. "Please, don’t kill me! I’ll do anything you ask!"

"Oh!" Blood Stinger stopped and grabbed the woman’s chin.

The woman had delicate features and fine skin, a rarity in Black City. She quickly put on a fawning expression, her eyes seductive.

TSK TSK...

Blood Stinger clicked his tongue, then thrust his sword. The thin sword entered through the woman’s mouth and emerged from the back of her skull, then with a gentle flick, split her head in two.

Quite a beautiful woman. What a pity.

「Atop a distant rooftop,」

A man furrowed his brow and withdrew his gaze.

"Bro," the woman beside him asked, "what is it?"

"Saw a madman." The man took the Longbow from his back, bent the bow, notched an arrow, and aimed into the distance.

TWANG!

The bowstring trembled as a long arrow soared through the void, pinning a distant, wandering half-dead to the ground. His range was extraordinary, his power terrifying, and his archery precise. Any archer witnessing this would despair at their own inferiority.

"Madman?"

The woman shook her head. She lacked her brother’s Hawk’s Eye Dharma Seal and couldn’t see that far, but she had her own strengths.

"Brother, Rat Woman from the Brotherhood is coming over."
