Ch. 7 - Flushed Shen Qinghan: This Game is Garbage!!!

Shen Qinghan didn't take this old-school gunfight game seriously. Although she didn't play games much, she had played competitive games for a while in university. Even when playing extremely difficult mecha combat games, she could win university league championships. This primitive shooting game was naturally nothing to her.

As the landing craft shuddered, seemingly hitting something with its bottom, under the virtual haptic feedback state, Shen Qinghan stumbled and nearly fell over, when she heard a voice:

"Everyone! Form two lines, avoid the shell craters! Prepare for landing! May the Lord bless you!"

Before she could think about who the Lord was or why they needed blessing, there was a clang—the hatch at the front of the landing craft had already dropped, lowering the ramp. Shen Qinghan looked up to see the NPCs in front of her getting ready to charge toward the beach.

Suddenly the roar of machine guns erupted. Before Shen Qinghan could fully straighten her body, she saw the NPCs in front of her torn apart by powerful machine gun fire, with blood and chunks of flesh spraying from ahead.

Spattering Shen Qinghan with warm blood, the touch and temperature almost identical to reality was spine-chilling. Shen Qinghan froze completely, unable to think at all.

Bang! Her chest suddenly took a devastating hit, and before the sharp pain could spread—Bang bang bang bang! Blood bloomed from various parts of Shen Qinghan's body. The thoughts in her mind were useless—she had no time to react at all as a string of machine gun bullets hit her body.

With a thud, she collapsed, falling onto the deck.

Shen Qinghan's mind went completely blank. Not dead? This thought flashed through her mind. Shen Qinghan tried to get up, but found she couldn't control her body. The colors of the world in her vision grew weaker and weaker until everything fell into darkness...

Then Shen Qinghan's perspective brightened again, but it had changed to a bird's-eye view, watching the charge below. Watching the soldiers from the landing craft below get completely annihilated by the beach defenders.

A game over window appeared before her eyes. Only then did Shen Qinghan return to the desktop, gritting her teeth.

She clicked on "World War II: Rise of Empire" again. That was just too embarrassing. Thank goodness no one saw. She hadn't even gotten off the landing craft before being killed.

No wonder they needed to form two lines. Standing together like that was like being sitting ducks. How did Zhao Ming come up with such a twisted game? And why was there only one chance? Why did you have to wait so long after dying? Could such a long respawn mechanism really retain players?

Unwilling to accept defeat, Shen Qinghan appeared on the landing craft again. The game began.

Half a day later, in Zhao Ming's office, it was nearly noon and Shen Qinghan had been sitting on the sofa wearing the virtual helmet playing all morning. Zhao Ming estimated that she must have died dozens of times by now.

Still playing after dying dozens of times—it seemed his design was very successful. Even Shen Qinghan had become addicted. Just as he was thinking this, Shen Qinghan started moving, raising her hand to grab the virtual helmet from her head and slamming it hard on the ground.

"Zhao Ming!!!"

She was furious! She'd played over forty times and hadn't once lived past three minutes! She'd even drowned twice after falling into the sea and not being able to swim back up! How ridiculous!!!

What kind of broken, difficult gaming system was this! Shen Qinghan gritted her teeth, stood up and glared furiously at Zhao Ming, who was at his desk.

Zhao Ming coughed lightly. "What's wrong, Senior?"

Shen Qinghan spoke through gritted teeth. "What kind of broken game is this! Does this game even have a clear option?! Huh?!!! I died over forty times!!! This game makes successful landing completely impossible!"

Zhao Ming coughed twice. "But Senior, you played all morning. Doesn't that prove this game's success?"

Shen Qinghan's anger faltered. "I was just..." She was just refusing to accept defeat, so she kept starting over again and again. "That's different."

Zhao Ming smiled and said, "How is it different? You just refused to accept it. Not only do you think this way, other players will definitely think the same after playing. If everyone thinks this way, won't the game become popular?"

Hearing Zhao Ming's twisted logic, Shen Qinghan's head was buzzing and ringing, but she couldn't come up with any rebuttal. Finally, she said, "Even if this method is correct, isn't the game difficulty too intense? And why can't you respawn after death? Why must you wait for the match to end? Plus bullets hitting your body affects movement. These things..."

Zhao Ming said, "These are all very reasonable, aren't they?"

Shen Qinghan said through gritted teeth, "How are they reasonable? These settings make the gaming experience terrible. Players will definitely protest."

No respawn chances, and body injuries affecting movement. It was hard to imagine this was a gunfight game. This kind of real-time feedback should be for large-scale survival games, right? In this type of firearm game combat, having body injuries affect movement was literally deadly.

Zhao Ming shook his head and said, "No, this is the most realistic and reasonable system. This game doesn't have data panels or death counts. Because in reality, you only have one life. There's no setting like other games where you can respawn freely after death. This is to make players value life."

"Moreover, many people fantasize that once war comes, they'll command thousands of troops on the battlefield, perform magnificently, and defeat enemies completely."

Shen Qinghan's face reddened. Why did it feel like he was talking about her...

Indeed, before her first death, she'd been studying how to land on the beach, from which direction to take down enemy fire points. The result... she'd died over forty times and still hadn't reached the beach. All those thoughts were completely wasted. Looking back now, those thoughts were truly laughable.

Zhao Ming didn't notice Shen Qinghan's expression and continued talking. "But reality is often harsh. The vast majority of people can only be cannon fodder, just like those on the landing craft. I want players to experience this cruelty, recognize reality, and know they're nothing more than cannon fodder. In this way, who would still long for war? Doesn't this achieve the anti-war purpose? It perfectly aligns with the core requirements of the [Anti-War Competition]."

Shen Qinghan frowned slightly, finding herself unable to refute this. After thinking, she said, "Then shouldn't the game's pain sensation and movement be adjusted? It's already hard to land on the beach in perfect condition. If you get your arms and legs shot, you're basically waiting to die."

Zhao Ming shrugged and said, "You only have one life, and only one set of limbs. This virtual helmet scans the player's body data to generate the body. To give players a better experience, I specifically enhanced it based on the scan."

"The character you control in the game has 1.2 times your real-world speed and strength. In other words, in a real war, being cannon fodder in the game is no different from being cannon fodder in reality. I'm truly thinking of the players here, making games with care."
