Chapter 279: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Honey [5]

[ZULA]

The king walked into Kawai with his sleeping Erasthai in his arms and for a moment, the Lycans thought he had killed her. It wasn’t something they could put past him, given the way that she had left and how he was never one to forgive defiance targeted against him.

He was the devil for a reason and the woman was crazy if not stupid to go against him. However, when they saw him smiling as he admired her from in his arms, they were unsure of what to think.

The man who had never smiled at them, the man who never cared to even acknowledge anyone’s presence other than Sadako’s was now smiling from ear to ear with the woman in his arms.

It wasn’t that hard to tell that she was his greatest weakness, and if she wasn’t already, that’s what she would be; at least that much was certain.

That night, Zaffuto lay his Erasthai on his bed, the one place he had avoided for the longest time. He hadn’t slept for years and didn’t even know what sleep felt like. He had never had a reason to sleep.

But as he looked at her, the queen of his heart, the girl who didn’t think he was a monster, he couldn’t resist the urge to lay beside her, to keep her feeling safe. He however had a feeling that it wasn’t his protection that she sought.

And maybe that was why he slept beside her. Or maybe it was because he was scared she would wake up and not find him beside her, which was strange for a man who never cared.

Or maybe he just wanted to sleep on his bed for the first time in so many thousands of years, right? Whichever it was, there was no denying that the king was leaning towards the girl in his bed. Pergola this wasn’t as bad, right?

"You didn’t leave," Liana whispered groggily when she woke up to see Zaffuto already staring at her. His eyes were soft, almost humane. He looked like she was the best thing that had happened in his life.

He was worshipping her in silence and Liana could have sworn the man wasn’t sure of what he was doing. But then who was to tell Liana that she had caught the king’s eye so many years ago and that he had always avoided the paths she walked?

Who was to tell her that she made him so nervous that the craziest king always chose to take the longer route than use the road that passed right in front of her house?

Who was to tell her that he had always been sneaking to look after her and that when her parents died, he wanted to give them the breath of life, but he wasn’t sure if Liana would like that?

Who was to tell her that she was the one person he had invested affection into and that she was the light of his life?

Who was to tell her that she, the Lycan that was defiant and determined, was the only reason the king made sure to come back to the palace regularly, despite how horrid his actions during the day were?

She was the reason he discreetly changed his study to face the southern side of the kingdom, knowing so well that he could see her house so perfectly from the palace.

She was waiting for him, and even if he didn’t know how to spell it out, he had loved her long before he even knew what love was. She is his everything, and Zaffuto was glad she was here with him.

"I didn’t want you hounding me across the kingdom like I owed you debts," Zaffuto whispered huskily.

Liana chuckled lightly at that. It was not what she had expected, especially the light smile that was on his face, the smile that no one could ever relate to, and the smile that sometimes, even Sadako never saw for the longest time.

However, as she stared at him, taking in his features, she hoped that he knew that life wasn’t always going to be cruel to him. She hoped that someday he would let her in and that he would be able to talk about how life looked like for the both of them.

She had a lot of hopes for him, which was strange for a man who knew not of love. But that was the point of all these when the mad king himself was not ready to open a different Chapter of his life.

Would it ever be better? Would their lives change or was this just another series of unfortunate events that would come for them? If only there was a way for them to predict the future.

Perhaps the timelines would have been fixed.

But then there wasn’t a way.

And as they stared at each other they both were aware of the plots against the both of them.

Kawai had never been ripe for the taking like it was now that there was a Lycan queen. It was an unfortunate line of thought, but it was what the earth looked like on this side of the realm. And they knew it too.

"You look so good, I’d probably follow you just to let the kingdom know you belong to me," Liana said as she trailed a hand to access the king’s face.

The arm was covered in scars even on his face, but as she touched him, he felt like his world was closing in on him. He felt like she was going to be taken away from him. Everything he had loved had always been taken from him.

And while Zaffuto had been born as pure evil without any depressing backstory, he was tempted to pray to the goddess to protect his Liana if ever there came a time when he wouldn’t be able to.

It was a groggy wish lost in the endless thoughts that rammed the king’s head with just a touch from his Liana. He was a determined man, and it was so new to him that he almost seemed pathetic.

But was he, when he wanted a different life for her?

Was he when he wished that there was a way that he would keep her safe from the life he had been leading?

Of course, he could have led her on the sidelines and never accepted their bones, but there was something about Liana that had made the king decide on her. Maybe it was bait by the fates, and even so, would Zaffuto fight the obvious connection?

"I’m a monster, Lili. A selfish monster who will most definitely hurt you. You’re kind and I don’t want to be the reason you get hurt. So, leave. You are free to go. I won’t follow you. You can be the queen from whenever just...

"I can’t be the reason you get hurt," Zaffuto whispered gently as he breathed her honey scent in.

He knew that there was never going to be a better timeline for this. He was aware that she had inherited all of his enemies and they would be coming after her and yet he couldn’t find it in himself to push her away.

She was love and life, and he hoped that she would live alongside him for the rest of their lives however chaotic they would be. Was it too much to ask for the deities though?
