Chapter 277: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Honey [3]

[ZULA]

"Gods, I hate you," Zaffuto sighed right before he heard Liana’s stomach growl.

"You didn’t even fucking eat?" Zaffuto asked disappointedly as if that were supposed to make the woman forget about what had come for her with him. Perhaps it would have worked with the concern on his face, a show so new it was appalling.

"If you want to kill me, the least you could do is feed me, don’t you think, Shuten?" Liana asked, making sure to call the king by the name he so despised. But Liana was not one to listen.

If she had to irk the man into coming with her back to the palace then that was what she would do. He needed a break from the endless pointless murders. He had already shown everyone that he was a bondsman.

There was no need for him to be keeping at it like it was some damn trophy he was hoping for.

This was madness and while it was an aspect of the king Liana knew she had to embrace. She hoped that he would understand that life didn’t always have to be as chaotic, that life was worth living, and that he could breathe and let go easily.

Perhaps it was too much for her to ask, but then what the fuck was she supposed to make of it then?

"If you didn’t look so damn gorgeous right now, I would have killed you," Zaffuto said calmly, his hand on Liana not faltering. He had been trying to think with this woman and it was proving a little hard, now that he saw that the wolves were looking at his Liana.

He wanted to take them out. However, his focus was slowly shifting and it was more than obvious. Liana managed to make the mad king change his mind, which was interesting because this man had known nothing other than war his entire life.

Perhaps beauty was something to be thankful for, amid a people who were not sure where they stood with him, right? Maybe life would be different and they would be able to make things right, but at what cost?

"Then I shall always wear this," Liana laughed lightly, thankful that at least with the chaos, she was managing to get through to him. It was something that made her heart beat faster, but she was so focused on the heartbeats of her Erasthai that she got a little too erratic.

It’s crazy how they had gotten to this point, but then none was willing to stand there and give a possible explanation to the chase that lived and designed their lives, right?

"No... not this," Zaffuto said slowly, his displeasure showing.

"Does that mean you want to see me in other clothes?" Liana asked curiously, knowing so well what he meant.

Perhaps this was her chance to make fun of the mad king, or maybe this was her chance to see to it that everything was alright and that he managed to come home with her so easily.

"I didn’t say that... you’re twisting my words," Zaffuto sighed desperately, making Liana arch a brow. She had known that the man was a piece of work, but here and now, the desperation in his voice spoke of something else.

Liana wanted to hold onto it, but she wasn’t sure if there was a need for that. The king was Zaffuto and he would do whatever the fuck he wanted. Besides, she was known to be good at manipulating people.

But was that what he was doing now?

Was he trying to manipulate Liana into anything or was it just him being frank with her and letting her know that she was affecting him? Of course that was also a possibility, but Liana had to hope. She had to try and think positively.

"And mosquitoes are on me again, you barbarian," Liana said as she punched his arm lightly.

"Oh, Lili..." Zaffuto whispered softly, leaning into her, breathing her honey scent like it was the one distraction he needed at the moment. Perhaps it was working, or maybe the king was just trying to hold onto something that he knew he would never be able to understand.

Emotions were confusing and he was feeling them without knowing what was happening to him. Of course, he would have easily switched off his humanity and ignored the woman.

However, a part of him wanted to know what it was like to be with her, to be there beside her regardless of what chaos he was triggering.

He wanted to know her better and fuck it was weird that he was thinking of all that here, outside the palace and on their mating night. He was doomed, but was he going to fight it too? Well, maybe he would have to try and make it make sense for a while.

"Let’s go home, angel," Liana said and Zaffuto stiffened suddenly.

"Angel?" Zaffuto asked, unsure of what he had heard. Surely it wasn’t him she was referring to, right? The living, the dead, and even the unborn of the realm knew he was the worst of devils out there, so what the fuck was Liana Hinata playing at?

"Yup... you’re my angel... and I intend to make everyone see you as one too. You can kill me now if you don’t want me to," Liana said and the king was sure she was losing her mind from being around him for too long.

They needed to get out of there before she started talking about impossible shit.

What part of him made her think that she was a bagel? They were already in a field with bodies he had eliminated and some were far too fresh and yet she still thought of him as someone who was angelic.

They had to go home.

"No one is killing you, Lili. If they try that, I will burn them down," Zaffuto said, his tone filled with the promise of fate and certainty of his bond. He was not gambling when it came to her.

Perhaps it was way too soon for him to be that excited, but he was a man of his word, and he had sworn he would try to be a better person for her.

He had promised himself that he would give them a chance and see if this would be worth it or if this was just a bond that was meant for them to pass the time.

Zaffuto had been skeptical at first, but in the few years he had interacted with her, he had been certain that she would mean something to him. Maybe, just maybe, he was not hallucinating, right?

"I know," Liana said before adding, "Let them go, even just for today. Do it for me, please. I... I just want us to go back home, without having to worry about what happened to you with them," Liana said, pleading with her husband.

She was very aware that she was asking for the impossible. But then there always had to be a next time, right? Besides, if he didn’t kill these ones, there would always be more wolves for her to take out.

All they had to do was head back and then try it again tomorrow. The sun would shine and they would surely try again. Hell, if he wanted her help, she would give it willingly without so much as a second thought.

That was something that the line had long noticed too.

"You’re asking the impossible of me, Lili," Zaffuto pointed out casually as he smiled at her. She was trying to mold him into a normal person and as hard as that was supposed to be for him, he wasn’t vainly objecting to it.

It was almost like he wanted this to be a truth that he couldn’t ignore. He wanted to lean into that new experience and he wasn’t shaken by it at any point in time.

"It’s our wedding night, angel," Liana said with a pout.

"Okay, Lili. Okay," Zaffuto said before releasing the wolves he had captured. It is probably a mistake, but for his Lili, he would do anything. He would give her the realm if she so much as asked and he wouldn’t complain about it.

"See... I knew you were an angel," Liana said proudly and Zaffuto chuckled slowly.

"You have so much faith in me, Lili."
