Chapter 177: I Love You

Chapter 177: I Love You

The world burned around him as he moved.

Lucifer drifted through the crumbling streets like silent mist, his white hair flicking against his cheeks in the biting wind. Shattered skyscrapers leaned against each other like broken teeth under a dying sky streaked with black lightning. Fires burned in the distance, their orange glow flickering against walls cracked and split open by deep quakes that shook the earth to its veins.

He felt it. The heartbeat of the planet slowing further with each passing second. The trembling pulse fading under Adam’s quiet, endless consumption.

His feet touched cracked asphalt as he stepped into what was once Madison Avenue. Cars lay overturned and burned out. Bodies slumped against the sidewalks, their souls already fled. Dust and ash swirled around him, sticking to his pale skin and streaking his bloodstained coat.

Then he saw her.

Luna.

She was standing near a collapsed overpass, her hair tied back roughly with a strip of torn cloth. Blood streaked across her forehead, dripping down onto her cracked glasses. She was shouting commands to a small group of survivors, ushering them down into a wide storm drain tunnel half-buried under fallen concrete. Her hands shook as she lifted a crying child into a waiting woman’s arms. Tears glistened in her eyes, but her voice remained strong as she forced calm into her trembling throat.

"Go! Quickly! Stay together—don’t look back!"

The wind roared through the broken towers above her, carrying dust and debris in screaming clouds. A deep rumble shook the cracked street as another skyscraper collapsed in the distance, sending a pulse of grey smoke rippling through the canyon of ruined buildings.

Lucifer watched her quietly. The white tips of his hair drifted across his silent crimson eyes. His bare feet crushed small shards of glass and stone as he stepped forward, his aura rippling softly in the dying dawn.

"It’s futile," he said softly, his voice carrying through the screaming wind like a quiet blade.

Luna froze. Her shoulders trembled as she turned, her wide, terrified eyes locking onto him. For a moment, she stared in shock, her lips trembling with words she couldn’t form. Then tears welled in her eyes as her shoulders sagged.

"Lucifer..." she whispered. Relief and grief crashed through her voice all at once. "It’s... it’s really you..."

He stepped closer, his wings flickering into faint view behind him, dark mist curling from their edges before fading into nothing.

"Yes," he said quietly.

She wiped her tears roughly with the back of her trembling hand. "What... what do you mean it’s futile? These people—these children—they’ll die up here if we don’t get them underground—"

Lucifer shook his head slowly. His hair drifted across his eyes, hiding the quiet grief burning there.

"The world is dying, Luna," he said. "There is no underground safe enough. No building strong enough. No prayer loud enough. The creator of your human world... he’s taking it back. Consuming it. Using its death to fuel his own power. And when he’s done... he’ll create a new world."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping into an even softer tone as he stared into her shaking eyes.

"But this one... and everyone in it... will be gone."

Her lips trembled. She shook her head, stepping back from him as silent tears slipped down her cheeks.

"No... no... there must be something—somewhere we can—"

"There is nothing," he cut in, his voice trembling with quiet anger. "I came here to save you. Just you. Because you... you’re a good person, Luna. Foolish, but... good."

She looked at him then, truly looked at him. Her vision blurred with tears, but his silhouette burned clear against the swirling ash and dark dawn. The demon. The vampire. The monster everyone feared. But to her, standing here now, he looked only tired. Only sad. Only... human.

Her fingers curled into tight fists as she shook her head again.

"I can’t leave them," she whispered. Her voice cracked as a sob slipped through. "I can’t just leave them to die... they’re innocent—"

"Innocent?" Lucifer snapped, his eyes burning brighter as a ripple of crimson light flickered across the cracked asphalt. "These same humans who hunted witches for existing? Who killed my kind because they feared us? Who forced me to kill children just to survive their raids? Who betrayed you when you tried to defend me... when you defended people like me?"

His breath trembled as he took another step forward, his wings flickering faintly behind his shoulders.

"Not everyone is worth saving."

She sobbed softly, wiping her tears with trembling hands. "They’re... they’re still people... even if they’re afraid, even if they did horrible things... there must be a way to—"

"There isn’t!" he roared.

His voice cracked the broken windowpanes lining the ruined street. Dust and debris rippled outward from his feet as his aura burned darker, the sky above him flickering with crimson lightning.

He clenched his fists, trembling as he lowered his head, his white hair falling across his eyes. His shoulders shook with silent grief and rage.

"I don’t even know... why I’m here to save you," he whispered, his voice raw. "You’re just... a human... you’re weak... you’re foolish... and yet..."

He looked up at her again, eyes burning with tears that didn’t fall.

"I couldn’t just leave you here."

She stepped forward. Her legs trembled under her, her body shaking with sobs as she reached out and pressed her hands against his cold, bloodstreaked chest.

"I know why," she whispered, her voice breaking into silent tears. "It’s because... because you’re not the monster they think you are..."

His wings flickered, feathers trembling faintly behind him.

"You’re not," she whispered again, shaking her head as tears dripped onto his chest. "You’re... you’re just someone who wanted to protect his family... someone who carried everyone’s burdens alone... someone who kept fighting... even when everything was falling apart..."

Her fingers curled into his coat as her forehead pressed against his chest. Her shoulders shook with silent sobs as the roaring wind screamed around them, lifting dust and ash into swirling ghosts.

"I love you," she whispered.

The words slipped from her lips so quietly they almost vanished in the wind. But he heard them. Every trembling syllable. They burned into his bones like quiet fire, flickering deep into the places of him that had never known warmth.

His breath caught. His fists trembled as his wings folded inward, feathers curling around her shaking body.

"Don’t..." he whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of his grief. "Don’t say things... you don’t understand."

But she only pressed closer, tears dripping onto his chest as the world burned around them.

"I love you," she whispered again, louder this time, her voice trembling with quiet, unbreakable truth. "I don’t care what you are... vampire... demon... monster... I don’t care... I just... I just want you to live..."

The storm roared overhead, black lightning splitting the sky as the earth shivered with dying pulses. Lucifer closed his eyes, a single silent tear slipping down his cheek to vanish into her hair.

He wrapped his arms around her trembling shoulders, pulling her tight against his chest as the world collapsed quietly around them.

And for a single breath, under the dying dawn and roaring storm, there was no monster or human.

"That’s why you have to come with me."
