Chapter 64: Chapter 64 Gaps

Once he arrived on the open deck, Alka quickly returned to his cabin.

"Why do you have to cling to me?" As soon as he entered the room and closed the door, Alka immediately asked.

Lucilia turned into a faint mist and sat back at the bedside. Upon hearing Alka’s question, she pointed to her legs.

Alka looked. A pair of delicate, porcelain-like white legs extended from under her dress and hung at the bedside. Jade-like toes, adorned with green nail polish, added an extra touch of beauty.

"Very beautiful, no... I mean, what’s the connection between this and you clinging to my back?"

"My legs have a congenital condition, so I can’t walk. Obviously, I have to cling to your back."

Upon hearing this, Alka noticed that Lucilia seemed to always be sitting. Either by the bedside or on a table, he had never seen her stand.

However, Alka opened his mouth. "But... you’re just a soul now?"

Congenital issues are a physical problem, right? Can the soul be affected? Besides, you shouldn’t even be able to sit on the bed normally; you’d fall right through it.

Upon hearing this, Lucilia sighed and stood up directly from the bedside, only to immediately soften and fall downwards.

Alka instinctively dashed forward to catch her as she was about to topple. The soft, soul-like body lay in Alka’s arms, devoid of any weight, offering only a tactile sensation.

Then, Lucilia flew out of Alka’s embrace and sat in the air.

"Congenital physical problems reflect in the soul. Even acquired physical deficiencies, over time, will also mirror in the soul," she explained. "The soul and the body are one."

Upon hearing this, Alka nodded. He didn’t understand this knowledge, so he just believed it.

Lucilia once again turned into smoke and appeared on Alka’s back, her arms around his neck.

"You are the only one I can touch, so clinging to you saves a lot of effort. Moving around in the air is too taxing; after all, I’m just a soul."

This explanation was very reasonable. Alka could only nod, contentedly being a moving wheelchair. After all, having such a beauty clinging to his back, it was hard for Alka to feel he was at a loss.

"Can I carry you like this outside in the future?"

"Sure."

"Thank you."

He took out a necklace with a pendant that had a hollow frame. Placing the Magic Mirror in the hollow, he hung the necklace around his neck.

He turned to look at Lucilia sitting by the bed. "Do you know the Spell and recognize [Sound Bird]?"

"The style of the Spell has changed quite a bit from what I know; it’s much more concise," Lucilia replied. "If not for the feather, I wouldn’t have realized they are the same Spell."

Upon hearing this, Alka pondered. She recognizes the Spell, but in a more complex style... Could Lucilia really be from an ancient era? After all, the simple Spells used today are the results of ancient predecessors, developed and improved over generations. Lucilia’s account fits this condition well. However, even the geography has changed beyond recognition. Just how long ago was that era?

Alka couldn’t find modern records to verify, and Lucilia couldn’t find familiar things to compare, so he temporarily gave up.

Sitting at the table, he flipped through the books Bobby had handed him. Inside were introductions to, and analyses of, the origins of Spells, as well as their applications. All these Spells had annotations, but it was unclear who had marked them. The annotations listed which Spell materials were easily obtainable and which were nearly extinct. After all, the book’s author was from centuries ago, and no one had updated the book, so many things were out of date.

Lucilia also sat beside him, looking at the books in Alka’s hand.

"So many materials have gone extinct," she said, her voice carrying a hint of lament. From such information disparities, she could discern that her era of existence might be unusually distant from the present. But it also felt somewhat odd.

"Did you all in that era use this method to learn Spells?"

Upon hearing Alka’s question, she nodded. "Yes, the learning method isn’t much different from now. The method I taught you earlier is actually a family secret."

"Were you a Toucher in life?"

"No."

"No?" Alka was somewhat surprised. He had always thought Lucilia would have been a Toucher in life. After all, preserving a soul didn’t quite seem like something ordinary people could do.

"People with congenital physical defects don’t have the physical qualities to touch those Treasures."

Upon hearing this, Alka obediently closed his mouth, refocusing on the book.

There were lots and lots of Spells. Some had styles and learning materials; some only had names. Alka found that many Spell functions didn’t differ much, yet they were entirely different Spells. For example, [Fountain] and [Spring Water]. Their names implied they were very simple Spells. These Spells were collectively called life Spells—those that facilitated daily life but had few other practical uses. Sometimes, it was even thought they were a slight waste of Magic Power. One shot out water, and the other did too. However, one produced a jet, while the other just gently flowed. Such similar Spells were countless, and almost all were very easy to learn. There was no possibility of failure. This book mostly contained these types of Spells.

"These simple, very easy-to-learn Spells may originate from a single, very powerful Spell," Lucilia explained, noticing Alka had just entered the Extraordinary world and kindly offering an explanation from the side. "However, because individuals modified them in different directions, such exceptionally similar variations appeared."

Alka nodded, continuing to flip through. He saw the three Spells written by Jack. All were fairly powerful Spells. But comparing them to the book’s explanations, what he knew was distinctly different. Jack’s three Spells—their method of operation and resulting effects—were significantly stronger than what was described in the book. Moreover, the learning materials for [Cross of Righteous Fire] and [Silver Blade] were listed as extinct. The book didn’t even have specific Spell patterns for them, and the materials listed were entirely different from what Jack had provided.

"If materials are extinct, can you not learn them?"

Upon hearing Alka’s question, Lucilia shook her head. "It’s not like that. You can have knowledgeable people help, or you can find other substitute materials. Many Spells have interconnectedness, but that requires a certain amount of luck."

I see. So Jack mastered alternative materials for those two Spells? Perhaps on this vast sea, many factions and individuals possess such materials known only to a select few. Monopolization is the norm; sharing is the exception.
