Chapter 690: 074 Visiting and Giving Gifts_2
"Daddy, daddy, we’re back!" As soon as they entered the village, Xiao Linshuang couldn’t contain herself any longer in the carriage. Her little head popped out of the window eagerly, and upon spotting Lin Jiaxin from afar, she called out with her young voice at the top of her lungs.
Lin Jiaxin greeted his daughter with a beaming smile, lifting his hand in response. People said that having three daughters was losing out on money, but they didn’t know that each and every one of his daughters was the apple of his eye.
The moment the carriage stopped, Xiao Linshuang could hardly wait to jump out.
"Be careful!" Lin Jiaxin pretended to be displeased, but his hand was already out, ready to catch the little girl’s body quickly.
Xiao Linshuang giggled with joy, hugging Lin Jiaxin’s hand and chattering non-stop about all the wonderful things she had bought, amusing Lin Jiaxin to no end.
Several people moved the items from the carriage into the house, one by one. Now that the wing rooms had been built, Lin Yi occupied one, and the other, unoccupied for the moment, was temporarily used by Lin Yuan as a storage room.
Lin Jiaxin looked over the items the children had bought, picked out the meat and other things that were to be given to the villagers, and, knife in hand, set up a small table in the courtyard, ready to start cutting the meat.
"Dad, let me do it." Lin Jiaxin had only recently recovered from his leg injury and couldn’t do strenuous work or lift heavy objects yet. Lin Yuan, worried that her father might overexert himself, hurriedly set down her stool and took his kitchen knife from him.
Lin Jiaxin waved his hand, insisting it wasn’t necessary. He arranged the meat on the cutting board and, with the knife, made a drawing motion as if gauging the size of the portions. Then, with swift cuts, the pork was divided neatly.
Lin Yuan was almost dumbfounded; she never expected her father to be so skillful. He measured with his hands and cut pieces of meat that were almost uniform in size—more accurate than the measurements she would have made with a scale.
Xiao Linshuang may not have noticed that the meat cut by her father was all the same size, but she clapped her small hands cheerfully, laughing, "Oh, Daddy is so cool! When Daddy chops meat with the knife, it looks even cooler than when Big Sister fights!"
Lin Yuan’s face darkened as she looked at her younger sister’s flower-bright, smiling face and suddenly felt her hand itch again.
Because the meat weighed several dozen pounds, they had to put it back on the carriage, and the group began to travel around the village to distribute gifts. Lin Jiaxin personally led the horse by the reins, greeting everyone they met with joy.
The gifts weren’t for just anyone in the village; Lin Jiaxin only visited those who had helped him when he was down on his luck. No matter how much they had done, as long as they had been kind, he remembered each and every one of them. But there was something he felt ashamed about: the meat wasn’t bought with his own money, but by his daughters.
This regret had been weighing on his heart for a long while, and Lin Yuan, of course, picked up on it. She had already soothed him, pointing out that if his daughters could earn money, it was because he had raised them well. As their father, he naturally rejoiced in their success.
They first visited the village head’s house. The old village head had helped Lin Yuan’s family the most in the past and was one of the few in the village who didn’t scorn Lin Yuan’s nickname "Little Disaster Star." Lin Yuan had a particularly good impression of the old village head’s family.
The village head’s daughter-in-law was an amiable, constantly smiling and easygoing woman. Seeing the Lin family bring meat, she went to the kitchen and prepared something for them to take back with them.
The old village head took Lin Jiaxin aside for a private word, speaking about something that seemed to leave Lin Jiaxin hesitant. But after looking back at his three daughters, Lin Jiaxin managed a bitter smile and eventually shook his head at the old village head.
The old village head sighed and gave Lin Jiaxin’s shoulder a pat with his weathered hand, "Ah, they brought it upon themselves. You all just live your life well."
Although Lin Yuan didn’t hear what the two men discussed, from the old village head’s last words, she guessed they must have been advising Lin Jiaxin to go see Lin Jianling and his wife at the old house. Even though the couple had regrets, that couldn’t erase the hurt they caused in the past.
Seeing that Lin Jiaxin didn’t agree, Lin Yuan shrugged and pretended she hadn’t heard anything.
After leaving the village head’s house, they continued to several friends’ homes. However, when they got near the old house, Lin Jiaxin whether accidentally or deliberately, led the horse cart around it.
Lin Yuan opened her mouth but said nothing. Although she had no affection for Lady Yang, she was still willing to give money for the elderly couple’s care if her father asked; after all, they were Lin Jiaxin’s parents, her own grandparents.
