Chapter 586: Chapter 586 Just Taking Mine (4)_1
Lin Yuan smiled and pointed at Wang Qiaoxin’s carriage, "I’ve made myself clear just now. Today, I indeed spent a tael of silver to rent the road in front of your Chen family’s house. Given that, I ask Young Master Chen to please move your carriage aside and not block my way."
"You!" Chen Shimei was taken aback by Lin Yuan’s words and had no idea what to say for a moment.
Wang Qiaoxin trembled with anger but what could she do? The other party wanted neither silver nor had anything to do with them. Today was truly a disgrace!
Eventually, Wang Qiaoxin had the coachmen move the carriage to the side. After all the commotion, she didn’t want to stay at the Chen family’s place for another moment and signaled Chen Shimei to return to Zhuma Town with her.
In fact, their return was not only to discuss marriage arrangements with Old man Chen but also to take them to live in Yecheng. However, by then, Wang Qiaoxin was thoroughly disgusted with Old man Chen and his wife and didn’t want to see them at all.
Left with no choice, Chen Shimei had to accompany Wang Qiaoxin back to reside in Zhuma Town for the time being and let Old man Chen and his wife pack up, waiting for the carriage to pick them up when it was time to set off for Yecheng. Having emerged from seclusion, Wang Qiaoxin also wanted to enjoy herself for a couple more days in Zhuma Town.
Hearing their plans to stay at an inn in Zhuma Town, Old man Chen fantasized about being taken along but was disappointed when his son mentioned coming to pick them up in a few days to go to Yecheng together. He had been living in this secluded Lin family hollow for many years without ever leaving.
As Wang Qiaoxin stepped into the carriage, she turned back to give Lin Yuan a glare. To think a mere country girl could embarrass her so, it was infuriating.
Though the incident with Chen Shimei had occurred, Lin Yuan was quite satisfied with how the full moon banquet turned out.
Lin Jiaxin and his wife said nothing upon learning about Chen Zhu returning and changing his name to Chen Shimei. Lin Jiaxin felt guilty toward his daughter, as he initially liked Chen Zhu very much. He was handsome and educated, so he really hoped the two could be together.
But Lady Liu was clear-sighted; she had always suspected that Chen Zhu was unreliable, especially when Old Chen kept talking about his son achieving scholarly honor, which left her even more uneasy. As expected, Chen Zhu turned out to be a dubious "Little White Face."
While the couple didn’t say anything in front of Lin Yuan, whether they talked behind her back was something she had no knowledge of, nor did she care. After all, she had nothing to do with Chen Shimei anymore.
However, some people aren’t as easy to avoid as simply stating one’s intention.
The very next morning, Lin Yuan, as usual, went to check on her shop, Rice Flower Fragrance. Before she even entered, she heard a familiar voice.
Lv Liu excitedly showed off a pair of newly made mandarin duck-shaped red bean cakes to Wang Qiaoxin, lavishly praising, "Miss, miss, look at this, they’re shaped like mandarin ducks! I just asked, and they’re filled with red bean and brown sugar, which both symbolize good fortune and happiness. Miss, how about we buy our wedding cakes here when you and the young master get married? If we take them back, I’m sure they’ll make a sensation throughout Yecheng; I bet even that Tang, ahem, those other daughters from wealthy families will be green with envy!"
Wang Qiaoxin also liked the mandarin duck-shaped red bean cakes and carefully took them from Lv Liu’s hands, holding them out to Chen Shimei, "Shimei, look, aren’t they beautiful?"
Chen Shimei was uninterested in such things. If it wasn’t for Wang Qiaoxin dragging him out early in the morning to stroll around, he would have been sleeping in at the inn.
"Hmm, pretty," said Chen Shimei offhandedly. However, to not make Wang Qiaoxin feel like he was brushing her off, he soon added with a smile, gently looking at her, "Anything you like is beautiful to me."
One must admit, Chen Shimei really was skilled at sweet-talking. It seems all those books he had read in the past were now being put to good use.
Lin Yuan, standing at the door, overheard the last comment and snorted to herself. No wonder Chen Shimei, with his Scholar’s status, had caught Wang Qiaoxin’s eye; apart from having good looks, his honeyed words were undoubtedly a major contributor.
As Wang Qiaoxin basked in his flattery, she looked up and saw the very person who had brought mishaps and embarrassment upon her—Lin Yuan.
Wang Qiaoxin narrowed her eyes, deliberately hooking her hand around Chen Shimei’s arm, and then turned to Lin Yuan with a smile, "Oh, what a coincidence; to think we’d bump into each other here. We’ve only just arrived, and you’re already following right behind. Is Zhuma Town really that small?"
Wang Qiaoxin’s words carried the insinuation that Lin Yuan was deliberately following them, which Lin Yuan, of course, understood.
Chen Shimei’s gaze flickered, and turning his head, he indeed saw Lin Yuan.
He hadn’t slept at all the night before; Lin Yuan’s image had filled his mind. From the way they used to be together to their meeting yesterday, it was as though she had turned into a completely different person. Not to mention anything else, just her attitude towards him was enough to tell.
In the past, Lin Yuan seemed to want nothing more than to stick by his side every moment, with eyes as if they wished they could be fixed on him and him alone. But now, it was as if she saw a complete stranger in front of her.
To be honest, on his way back to the Lin family hollow, he had imagined countless scenarios for their reunion. Perhaps Lin Yuan would run into his arms, crying uncontrollably, regardless of everything else; or perhaps upon seeing Wang Qiaoxin by his side, Lin Yuan would stare blankly at him, tears streaming down. But he was certain Lin Yuan would never have the courage to confront him, because he knew this girl all too well—she had always put him first in her heart.
However, all his predictions failed to come true. That girl could actually look at him calmly, even at Wang Qiaoxin by his side, without showing a trace of sadness or disappointment.
