Chapter 479: Chapter 479 A Rival in Love is Especially Jealous (6)_1
Lin Yuan seemed to realize why she wanted to bring Lin Siyu into the residence to compete with another Little Concubine. It was merely a balancing strategy among the women in the inner house, and Lady Jin could not be classified as a good or bad person. As long as it helped maintain her status and her son’s position, she probably could do anything.
After all, it was the first time Jin Shiwen had gone out to shop, and after looking around for quite some time, he still didn’t know what to choose. Qinger let him try a few snacks, and Jin Shiwen’s eyes lit up, finding each one incredibly delicious. But when it came to buying, he was too embarrassed to speak up. The thoughts of a child long neglected are most sensitive; he feared that if he bought too much, his sister would be displeased, and she would never take him out to play again.
Jin Yuyu was talking with Lin Yuan at the doorstep, and seeing the little guy constantly looking back at her restlessly, she felt soft-hearted. After greeting Lin Yuan, she went in to help him choose together.
Watching from the doorway, Lin Yuan saw the dependence in Jin Shiwen’s eyes for Jin Yuyu and Jin Yuyu’s tenderness towards her little brother. She knew that their relationship was not mere mutual use as Jin Yuyu had claimed. Jin Yuyu truly loved her little brother, and with a father like theirs and a mother who had toiled so hard, the little brother was indeed the best support for her future.
Most people gathered at the door had already entered Rice Flower Fragrance, and many had come out with their purchases as well.
There was also a child, walking and eating his newly bought pastries. As he passed by Lin Yuan, he raised his hand holding the pastry and asked her in a milky voice, "Sister, sister, why is this called ’Donkey Rolling’? I’ve eaten several already but haven’t found any rolling donkeys inside!"
His words were heard by several adults who were entering, and they all covered their mouths and laughed. Lin Yuan looked over and realized that this was the same little grandson that the woman had been holding on to tightly earlier.
She crouched down, looked the child in the eye, and smiled, "It’s because this pastry is covered with a layer of bean flour, which makes it look like a donkey covered in dirt after rolling around. See, doesn’t it look like that?"
The child looked back and forth, seemingly understanding, then nodded and said, "Oh, so ’Donkey Rolling’ doesn’t necessarily contain a donkey. No wonder there’s no wife in ’Wife Cake’! Now I can eat it without worry. Grandma, I must tell Little Fatty when I get back that eating ’Wife Cake’ won’t make a wife appear, so he doesn’t have to worry about having a fearsome wife to deal with."
Pfft, this time even Xia Zheng behind her couldn’t help but laugh. The little guy was just too cute. Xia Zheng’s gentle gaze turned to Lin Yuan, wondering if their own children would be as adorable in the future.
The woman’s face turned red from her grandson’s words, and she quickly led the child away.
Lin Yuan shook her head with a smile. Was it possible that the names she had come up with were too unconventional and even led the children astray?
Just then, a graceful young master walked towards her from the opposite direction. Lin Yuan looked up and realized it was Eldest Young Master Ma, Ma Junying. However, today he wasn’t accompanied by that little foodie, Ma Xiaonan.
"Young Master Ma," Lin Yuan greeted politely, about to take a few steps closer to welcome him, but she suddenly felt a chill on her back, as if someone was stabbing her with their glare.
Oh, it wasn’t directed at her, but at him!
Without even turning around, Lin Yuan knew that Xia Zheng had spilled his vinegar again.
Standing still, Lin Yuan intentionally took a step back. Beneath her wide sleeve, her small hand gently pinched Xia Zheng’s hand.
Xia Zheng was surprised, and his glare suddenly halted. He looked down at the small, soft hand that was truly in his own, hidden by the wide sleeve, feeling a sweet warmth in his heart.
Ma Junying did not notice their discreet gestures, but Xia Zheng caught them with his eyes. For a moment, he was astonished and looked at Xia Zheng a few more times. In terms of appearance, Xia Zheng did indeed surpass him. However, his demeanor and personality did not seem very steady.
"Young Master Ma, how come you have time to visit today? And where is Miss Ma? Why did she not come with you?"
Lin Yuan’s words brought Ma Junying’s gaze back, and he smiled warmly, his voice calm and unhurried, "To tell you the truth, my cousin will be getting married the day after tomorrow. Xiaonan is at home accompanying my cousin during her final days before the wedding, and father has forbidden her to go out and wander."
So it turned out that the day after tomorrow was Ma Xiaoqian’s and Xie Zhiyuan’s wedding day. Lin Yuan looked up at Mo Sanniang in the cloth shop across the street, wondering what was on her mind.
Ma Junying then laughed again, "However, my sister knew I was coming to Rice Flower Fragrance today and specifically instructed me to bring back some pastries."
Lin Yuan chuckled to herself, deeply admiring the big foodie, Ma Xiaonan.
Just as she was about to speak, she suddenly noticed the young man following behind Ma Junying and pointed at him in surprise, "You, weren’t you just..."
The young man chuckled and quickly stepped out from behind Ma Junying, greeting Lin Yuan with a bow: "Boss Lin, that was indeed me earlier on; it was my young master who sent me here."
It turned out the young man who had spoken up earlier was Ma Junying’s attendant. No wonder she felt he looked familiar at first glance.
What surprised her even more was that Ma Junying would actually send someone to help her.
"Young Master Ma, thank you very much for your help just now." Lin Yuan was sincere in her gratitude; she always clearly remembered those who were willing to lend her a hand when in trouble.
Ma Junying, however, waved his hand nonchalantly, his smile still as warm and smooth as jade, indifferent as water, "Miss Lin, you’re too kind. It was merely a trivial effort. Besides, I am certain that the pastries from Rice Flower Fragrance have no issues, or else I wouldn’t have intervened."
Xia Zheng suddenly snorted disdainfully from behind, "Of course there are no issues now since everyone has witnessed Doctor Hu’s verification. Young Master Ma’s action is indeed timely like a retrospective cannon shot."
Lin Yuan frowned and shot him a look; after all, Ma Junying was her customer and one should not speak this way to a customer. Moreover, a person who steps up to help is a friend, and even if it’s only out of courtesy, one cannot make such barbed comments.
Xia Zheng felt inexplicably dumbfounded by Lin Yuan’s reproachful gaze. Silly girl, only you, the fool, failed to see Ma Junying’s ulterior motive towards you, and yet you glare at me! I’m the one glaring at him!
Xia Zheng’s eyes, like big copper bells, glared fiercely at Ma Junying.
Amused by his childish display of anger, Lin Yuan pinched his palm hard and scolded him with a look, then chose to ignore him.
