Chapter 441: Chapter 441 Uncle Wang and Lady Xie Come Again (1)_1
Lin Yuan arrived at the back kitchen where Uncle Wang sat resting in front of the stove with his hands clasped over his head. Yet, it was the occasional sigh that betrayed Uncle Wang’s troubles.
"Uncle Wang, what’s wrong? Have you encountered some difficulties?" Although Uncle Wang and the others were employed by Lin Yuan, having spent a lot of time together, she had come to regard them as her own family. Seeing them in trouble made her feel very anxious.
Upon hearing Lin Yuan’s voice, Uncle Wang suddenly lifted his head, his face still showing signs of the distress and sorrow that he hadn’t had time to hide. Coupled with his graying hair, it was really hard to believe that he was only a few years older than Lin Jiaxin.
"Boss? You’re here?" Uncle Wang quickly stood up from the small stool, looking noticeably uneasy.
Lin Yuan gestured for him to sit down, then took a small stool for herself and sat as well, "Uncle Wang, do you have something on your mind? I saw you sighing just now."
Having been at Rice Flower Fragrance for a while, Uncle Wang and the others were familiar with Lin Yuan’s temperament. Knowing her to be approachable and caring towards the workers, for instance, when Aunt Chen’s grandson fell acutely ill, and she asked Lin Yuan for leave, Lin Yuan agreed without hesitation and even took out five taels of silver for her to take her grandson to the doctor.
Uncle Wang, who had previously worked at other shops, had never seen an owner like Lin Yuan. Sometimes he felt fortunate; if his family hadn’t experienced such troubles, he would surely be very happy now.
"Boss, I... I’m fine. Just a bit tired. Just resting, just resting," Uncle Wang didn’t plan on telling Lin Yuan about his family issues, not only because it was a bit embarrassing but more importantly, he didn’t want to burden Lin Yuan with his problems which involved some serious matters.
Yet Lin Yuan didn’t believe him, but knowing he didn’t wish to speak of it, she didn’t press further. Looking around the clean kitchen, Lin Yuan expressed her appreciation, "Uncle Wang, I just tried the mung bean cakes you made, and the taste was really good."
Uncle Wang, not one for many words, just chuckled in response to Lin Yuan’s praise, without saying much.
"By the way, Uncle Wang, I’ve been meaning to ask since the day we hired workers. Did you learn this before? The little animals you shape are so lifelike. Moreover, the pastries I taught you, you managed to make them after only one try—you are really talented."
As soon as the discussion turned to making pastries, Uncle Wang seemed to find his sense of self-worth again, the desolation and anguish on his face lessened, and he said with a smile, "I won’t hide it from you, boss. I used to run a bun shop in the village, and the business was fairly good. As for those little animals, I figured them out while amusing my two daughters. Children like those, you see, so as I kept making them, it became second nature."
So that was it.
"You have two daughters? Oh right, I heard Liuzi say the other day that your younger daughter came to see you. He kept praising her, saying she is so pretty, and even at her young age, she’s already graceful."
Of course, this was not something Liuzi had said. Lin Yuan had seen Panpan more than once and was quite fond of the maid, naturally setting aside her status as Lin Siyu’s maid.
As soon as his daughters were mentioned, Uncle Wang’s expression suddenly changed, he waved his hands and hurriedly said, "Boss, my girls are just ordinary, not pretty, not pretty at all."
Lin Yuan was startled; usually, parents who have daughters like it when others praise their looks, hoping for them to marry well in the future. So why was Uncle Wang so sensitive and even averse to the word ’pretty’?
"Oh, by the way, Uncle Wang, what about your older daughter? You and your younger one both work in the town, is she with you too? You’ve been working here for such a long time, yet I’ve never seen her come to see you?"
