Chapter 1308: 177, Debt Collection at the Door (Second Update)_3

The wooden door, long neglected, creaked heavily and piercingly as it was pushed open, making the already dilapidated courtyard seem even more desolate.

Lin Yuan’s heart suddenly filled with bitterness, and she unconsciously quickened her pace. But after just a few steps, she stumbled over a pebble carelessly strewn on the ground.

"Miss! Be careful!" Shui Xian quickly steadied her, her tiptoes deftly kicking the offending pebble aside. But scarcely had she dispatched that one when, after only a couple steps more, they encountered another.

Even Shui Xian couldn’t help but complain, "Is this a deserted courtyard? Even if it is deserted, it shouldn’t mistreat people like this. After all, a legitimate daughter lives here; are there no maids to attend to her?"

Shui Xian and Yin Xing, both maids from General Mansion, had heard of such mistreatment but had never witnessed it before; they were indignant, and Yin Xing even called out as they walked, "Is anyone there? Hello?"

After who knows how many shouts, an impatient voice finally responded from a side room, "Who is it? What’s with the yelling so early in the morning!"

Lin Yuan couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation—it was nearly noon, and yet early in the morning? Was the maid oversleeping or had she slept herself stupid?

Just as she pondered this, a maid clad in a pink dress, yawning and stretching, came out. Seeing the jewelry on her head, Lin Yuan worried it would snap her neck.

"Huh?" Upon spotting strangers, the maid was initially startled, then swiftly assessed Lin Yuan and Xiao Linshuang without a trace. Upon realizing that their clothes were quite plain and their jewelry unremarkable, the disdain in her eyes became obvious.

"Which mansion do these two misses belong to? Are you here to visit our Little Concubine? To be frank, our mistress is unwell and cannot receive casual visitors. You should go back early!"

The maid didn’t even bother with formalities and seemed about to return to her room, her sluggish demeanor suggesting she intended to go back to sleep.

Lin Yuan narrowed her eyes, about to erupt, when she suddenly heard a miserable wail from the main room, followed by a maid, only slightly older than Xiao Linshuang, running out crying.

"Ying Ge sister, I beg you, find a doctor for the mistress! She has been unconscious for a long time, and just now, she began vomiting again!"

The maid being pleaded with, Ying Ge, was the one intending to go back to sleep.

Ying Ge turned and kicked away the maid clinging to her legs, her expression one of disgust as she scoffed, "Stop crying! The Little Concubine isn’t dead! Who are you wailing for?"

The crying maid, named Xue Ge, was a maid close to Han Huijuan, wearing very plain clothes. Compared to Ying Ge, it was like the difference between heaven and earth—appearing as if a young mistress from a lesser family was chastising a lower-ranked maid.

Just from their clothing, Lin Yuan could tell that Xue Ge was close to Han Huijuan and that Ying Ge was likely a spy sent by the concubine who had taken over as Madam.

Xue Ge clutched her kicked stomach, not wanting to leave, pitifully begging Ying Ge. However, Ying Ge still seemed unwilling to attend to her, scoffing and smiling maliciously, "Want a doctor? It’s not that I don’t want to get one for you, but the person in charge won’t allow it. Though, if you really want to get a doctor, why don’t you, perhaps, go beg the Young Master?"

As soon as she heard the words ’Young Master,’ Xue Ge’s body shivered like a sieve, her face turning even paler, "I, I..."

"Don’t want to go?" Ying Ge rolled her eyes and sneered, "I thought you were loyal. Turns out, you’re just acting!"

Lin Yuan clenched her fist. Although she didn’t understand all that was said, she guessed some of it.

She nudged Xiao Linshuang, who was already struggling to resist the urge to jab someone with the Silver Needle, and signaled Yin Xing with her eyes, "Xue Ge, we are friends of your mistress. Let us go in and see her!"

By then, Yin Xing had already briskly walked over and helped Xue Ge up.

Xue Ge, who had been anxiously thinking about fetching a doctor for Han Huijuan, hadn’t even noticed the strangers in the courtyard, and it seemed no one had visited the mistress since the Madam’s death.

"You..." Xue Ge was still confused when Yin Xing had already escorted her into the main room. Ying Ge watched them with disdain, but still very unwillingly left the courtyard.

Knowing that Ying Ge was undoubtedly going to report back to the Madam, Lin Yuan wasn’t concerned. It would be better if everyone came.

Following Xue Ge into the room, Lin Yuan’s frown deepened!
