Chapter 1275: 165, Talented Lady (Second Update)

Lady Han and Lady Meng were also infuriated to the point of seeing stars by Lady Liu’s seemingly elegant but actually rude description, but as angry as they were, they couldn’t think of anything to say in retaliation. After all, what Lady Liu had said was indeed the truth that Xia Zheng, that little rascal, despite the presence of Su Qiuyu and Yao Hanai, had fallen for Lin Yuan, a petty village girl. Didn’t this mean their daughters were even less desirable than toads?

Lady Han immediately felt like she had lifted a rock only to drop it on her own feet.

Outside the door, Lin Yuan was laughing so hard her mouth almost reached the back of her head. She really wanted to give her mother a big thumbs up! She had never realized Lady Liu could be so capable!

Now, she was truly reassured.

A maid happened to be on her way to deliver refreshments to the room and curiously observed Lin Yuan, who was crouching by the door and sniggering, completely puzzled by the sight.

Lin Yuan was no stranger to the General Mansion, and the little maids within all recognized her, especially because in their eyes, she had already become a figure like the Second Young Lady.

Embarrassed by the way the little maid was staring at her as though she were a strange creature, Lin Yuan gave an awkward chuckle, straightened up, cleared her throat softly, patted down her skirt, and adjusted her clothes before entering the floral hall under the maid’s watchful eye.

While Su Qiuyu and Su Zhe were not simple individuals, Madam Su tended to be more bark than bite. As Lin Yuan entered the floral hall, the previously unsatisfied Lady Han, who had been complaining to Lady Liu, suddenly fell silent.

Lin Yuan found it quite amusing to see Lady Han looking so deflated. It seemed that Lady Liu’s recent words had really choked her, and now she was so angry she couldn’t even speak.

"Yuanyuan, you’ve arrived!" Seeing Lin Yuan, Lady Liu happily waved her over and, with affection, smoothed out her slightly disheveled hair.

Lin Yuan knew that Lady Liu was purposely putting up this nonchalant act, so as to not worry her.

Raising her hand to warm her mother’s slightly cool palms, Lin Yuan returned a big, warm smile.

Mothers and daughters have a special connection. Without saying much, both were clear in their hearts.

Lin Yuan’s sudden appearance added an eerie tension to the already stiff atmosphere of the floral hall. Many there were seeing the rumored Lin Yuan for the first time. They had heard talk of how the girl had bewitched the General Mansion’s second son, completely ensnaring his heart, even forsaking his childhood sweetheart Su Qiuyu. Moreover, this girl was also the Third Prince’s sworn sister. It was hard for everyone to imagine that such a powerful figure in the Capital city could be the same delicate, lovely and dignified fourteen-year-old before them.

Lady Meng had certainly seen Lin Yuan before; she had caught a glimpse of her from afar during a banquet hosted by Yao Hanai. At that time, she hadn’t taken much notice of her. But now it seemed the girl was truly extraordinary, with her pair of eyes as deep and serene as an ancient well, her calm appearance hiding a storm within.

"Yuanyuan, these ladies here are your elders, please pay your respects to them," Lady Liu said after finding out where Lin Wei and the others had gone to play, addressing the seated women.

She referred to them as ’elders’ and not the wives of court officials, aiming to cut off any thought they might have of crushing her and her daughter with their status.

Lin Yuan inwardly smiled, impressed by her mother’s increasingly profound and meaningful way of speaking.

While she felt amused, Lin Yuan politely paid her respects to the ladies. She didn’t feel humiliated by this round of greetings; after all, these women were indeed several decades her senior, and offering them due respect was only right.

After performing her courtesies, each lady offered her compliments in turn, praising her for being polite and sensible. The words were inconsequential flattery, with everyone smiling as they spoke, though what they truly thought, she did not know.

Aware that their lavish words were insincere, Lin Yuan didn’t take them to heart. She modestly showed a hint of shyness before confidently sitting down to rest beside Lady Liu. Having risen early in the morning and after several confrontations with those people at Tian Hui’s, she was indeed tired.

But, as usual, there was someone who did not wish to let her rest in peace.

Taking a sip of her tea, Lady Meng glanced at Lady Han and saw that she was just glaring at Lin Yuan with frustration, showing no signs of an outburst. A scoff formed in Lady Meng’s mind.

Setting down her teacup, Lady Meng smiled as she turned to Lin Yuan and said, "I have long heard of Miss Lin’s reputation, and seeing you today, it’s clear that the fame is well-deserved. You are truly outstanding."
