Chapter 1269: 163, Can’t Buy (Second Update)

After being roundly chastised by Lin Yuan in an indirect way, Cheng Yuexiu was both ashamed and furious, her cheeks flushing a bright red.

Many people lowered their eyelids with amusement, seemingly sharing little affection for Cheng Yuexiu, who only knew how to flatter others.

Only Xu Muqing, a woman of simple thoughts, stuffed an orange segment into her mouth and curiously asked, "Which sentence is true?"

Lin Yuan chuckled. "It’s that sentence about how my belongings are things you don’t have. Indeed, my dowry gift, let alone seeing it, hasn’t even been heard of by any of you."

Such a miraculous item?

Everyone’s curiosity was piqued, and they all craned their necks to look at Lin Yuan.

Reprimanded so mercilessly by Tian Hui in front of so many people, Cheng Yuexiu was so embarrassed she could barely save face, and she harbored even more resentment toward Lin Yuan. Pouting, she muttered, "What could it be? It must have been bought with a large sum of money! The stench of copper is disgusting!"

Su Qiuyu, who stood beside her, felt the same and nodded in agreement, raising her eyebrows.

However, Lin Yuan merely gave the two of them a looks that was both smiling and not, which made Cheng Yuexiu feel guilty as if Lin Yuan had heard what she had said. And following that, Lin Yuan’s next words made Cheng Yuexiu so anxious that she didn’t even dare raise her head.

Lin Yuan took a somewhat flat, square-shaped box from Shui Xian and opened it while smiling, "Not to boast, but although my item isn’t as expensive as Miss Su’s pearls or as peculiar as Miss Yao’s ink, I can assure you that even if you traveled the world, you wouldn’t find another gift like mine."

Someone sneered, and many faces showed a trace of mockery.

Lin Wei and Xiao Linshuang, however, had already seen the item that their elder sister mentioned. They were supremely confident in it and thus did not take the sneer to heart.

While everyone was curiously guessing what the item might be, Lin Yuan took something wrapped in a red silk cloth from the box, something oval-shaped, not small, and seemingly hard—more precisely, it seemed like a flat board.

So flat, what could it be?

"Sister Hui, close your eyes first," Lin Yuan instructed Tian Hui, cradling the red-wrapped gift in her arms and winking mysteriously.

"Oh, you and your secrets," Tian Hui joked, though she obliged and closed her eyes, the corners of her mouth curling up slightly, revealing her own curiosity regarding the item.

Everyone stretched their necks to see, their breath almost still with anticipation. Cheng Yuexiu scoffed internally, thinking Lin Yuan was putting on a show of mystery and would be embarrassed if she failed to present something impressive.

With a beaming smile, Lin Yuan gently removed the red cloth from the mirror, then quickly flipped her hands. All that the onlookers saw was a flash of light before it vanished from sight.

"All right, Sister Hui, you can open your eyes now."

Lin Wei slightly bent her knees and placed the mirror before Tian Hui. Since Tian Hui was sitting and only a few maids were behind her, without any other young ladies present, only Tian Hui could see the gift in front of her.

Hearing Lin Yuan’s invitation, Tian Hui opened her eyes with a chuckle, saying, "All right, as you say, I’m opening my..."

The crowd listened to Tian Hui speak, but silence fell as she didn’t finish her sentence. Puzzlement, curiosity, and astonishment crossed their faces as they wondered what could be hidden behind Lin Yuan that left Tian Hui speechless.

It felt like an eternity before Tian Hui finally broke the silence, her voice more tender than a spring breeze, softer than drifting willow catkins, and as cautious as one walking lightly on thin ice for fear of breaking it.

"Is... is the person in here really me? Truly, is it me?"

Tian Hui reached out incredulously to touch the lightly arched brows of the woman reflected before her but quickly retracted her hand.

"No, I... I don’t dare touch it."

Lin Yuan laughed, "It’s fine, Sister Hui, you won’t break it."

"Really?"

Lin Yuan nodded, gesturing for her to go ahead.

Tian Hui, both annoyed and excited, touched the mirror’s surface with trembling fingers. The sensation was different from that of a bronze mirror; this mirror was brighter and smoother, like touching water, yet unlike water, it was substantial. It didn’t ripple around when touched, nor did it shatter her reflection.
