Chapter 1129: 041 Starving!_2
"It appears to be the two sons of the Wu family, I’ve heard much about you." Xia Zheng responded perfunctorily, though his face showed not a hint of a smile.
Yet, even so, Wu Zhengqing wasn’t the least bit irritated. Although he had come to the Capital earlier this year, during his four months here, he had mostly heard about Xia Zheng of the General Mansion—everyone said he was proud and rude, hardly sociable. His friends in the Capital could be counted on one hand. Wu Zhengqing would have thought it suspicious if Xia Zheng had greeted him with a smile at their first meeting.
"I’ve long heard of Young Master Xia’s great reputation, but I never expected to encounter you here today, what fate," said Wu Zhengqing with a smiling face, although not overtly ingratiating, their mere presence there was flattery enough.
Inside the carriage, Lin Yuan, hearing the voice outside, couldn’t help but feign a gag and muttered softly, "Who knows if it’s really fate?"
Xia Zheng pinched the ticklish flesh around Lin Yuan’s waist, his expression still cold: "Yes, I’ve only returned to the Capital a few days ago, and yet I’ve heard the grandiose name of the Wu family of Jiangnan everywhere. If it were about fate, I suppose I should be the one to say so."
Xia Zheng was indeed truthful. Ever since the Wu family outshone the Chen family and acquired the reputation of Imperial Merchant, their fame had been rising daily in the Capital, even Xia Zheng who returned two months late heard about it all the time.
Wu Zhengqing gave a humble smile, wanting to continue the small talk, but Xia Zheng already showed no interest in prolonging their conversation, only saying, "Young Master Wu, I’m really sorry, but I must attend to some business in the Capital and cannot talk any longer, please forgive me."
"Since Young Master Xia has urgent matters, please feel free to leave; another day we can..."
Before Wu Zhengqing could finish speaking, Lin Yi shouted "Giddy up!" and drove the carriage away, leaving a cloud of choking dust behind.
"Cough cough, cough cough." Choked by the dust, Wu Jiangtao’s drunkenness was somewhat alleviated. Waving away the dust in front of him, he angrily shouted, "What the heck! Talk about ingratitude! Still daring to choke me! I see you don’t want to live!"
"Don’t talk nonsense!"
Compared to Wu Jiangtao’s brashness, Wu Zhengqing was much more composed. Despite the tears streaming from being choked by dust, he cautiously interrupted his older brother’s complaints. They had only recently arrived in the Capital, and even with the Second Prince backing them, they couldn’t afford to be careless. Moreover, he had already learned that even the Second Prince was somewhat wary of the Xia family, let alone a mere merchant family like theirs?
Wu Jiangtao, clearly not understanding his younger brother’s thoughts, continued to complain: "I was having a great time at the brothels, and without a word, you had someone carry me back here. I thought there might be some good reason, but it turns out you just wanted me to eat dust here! You can eat it alone then; my clothes are still at the brothels, I need to go back and get dressed!"
Saying so, he signaled to a young servant to bring a carriage to take him back to the Capital city.
Wu Zhengqing knew his older brother had always been a hedonist; it was only because of meeting with Young Master Xia, just being a master by himself might lead to disrespect, that he had bothered to fetch him from the brothel! Even wasting a fine piece of clothing in the process!
"Alright, alright, just send him back," Wu Zhengqing said impatiently, frowning and waving his hand to hasten the young servant, wishing he could avoid his irresponsible older brother that very moment. What a wasteful fellow!
"Don’t go too fast, keep an eye on that carriage ahead, make sure to maintain some distance," he repeatedly cautioned the driver. Wu Zhengqing then let them leave, well aware of his older brother’s irritable temper; if he carelessly offended some important person, it would spell trouble.
Once Wu Jiangtao’s carriage had gone far enough, Wu Zhengqing turned to watch the direction in which Xia Zheng’s carriage had headed. He remembered the Lizheng’s messages about the land being of poor quality, the estate not very large, yet Xia Zheng had purchased it without blinking an eye at the high price.
If it were as the Lizheng said, that he had bought it blinded by love, that would be one thing. But from what he knew of Xia Zheng, such foolishness didn’t seem likely. Moreover, he had that village girl with him today.
Although they had only met once, he could see that both were more rational than emotional, and most likely wouldn’t commit such an act.
